hey all!

this is actually my first thread. to date i haven't shot too much with the R3D cameras
but i've been familiar with the RAW workflow for over a year now. first off, thanks to
the incredible community here at Reduser.com, i was able to shoot with another
member who just received his Scarlet. and honestly, it was one of the best
experiences i've ever had shooting. one, because i was shooting motion
picture on a 5K camera, and two, it was just a couple guys, running around
Griffith Park trying to get a few good shots. nothing serious, just having fun
with a brand new camera.

but not only was this an opportunity to shoot using a awesome camera, but
i wanted to be the first to test out the Scarlet with the Dynamic Perception
system. for those who are unaware, it is a 3 Axis motion control system which i
use to take 5K stills using my 5Dmk2. but, because of the Scarlets ridiculously
small form factor, i was able to mount the camera right on the Merlin pan/tilt
head and get going. of course i had a few limitations, since exposure is non-
functioning and i wasn't aware that if you held in the fps button it gives you
longer intervals. so i shot at 8fps and dragged the shutter for as long as
possible to give a usable exposure since i was shooting in an extremely
low-light scenario.

as far as impressions, i plan to write an article on my website, but in the
mean time all i'll say is. at least for me, using a Canon 5D and a R3D Scarlet
is perhaps the perfect combination. i use my 5D to shoot all my 5K stills,
creating time-lapse sequences, then use the Scarlet to shoot all other
frame-rates. since the language of cinema can not be told in one frame-rate.
it's important to understand what looks better in time-lapse as well as slow
motion and real-time. so instead of me asking myself wether i can even
get a particular shot, it becomes of matter of choosing the right tool for
the job.

in closing i wanted to introduce myself. my name is Richard Gluck and i am
a motion control timelapse photographer based in Los Angeles. to date, i
have received a lot of notice through the best time-lapse forum on the
web timescapes.org and now i wanted to offer my services in whatever
way possible on reduser.net. my journey throughout my career so far
has been coming into contact with other great individuals and i seek to
broaden my experiences in whatever way possible. please, if i can be of
use to anyone here don't hesitate to ask. i am always glad to help others,
and will try to keep my motion control experiences with the Scarlet up
to date as much as possible on this great community/forum for camera
artist/tradesmen. thanks and happy shooting.

Welcome back to the forum. I have been doing timelapse with my 5d for the last year or so as well and looking forward to doing it with my Scarlet.

Hi Richard welcome, I'm a newish member myself, plenty of info to glean from the threads.

I noticed you mentioned you're using a dynamic perception dolly on a three axis movement. I was just wondering what "head" you use to gain the other 2 axis & if you had any difficulties. As I also own the same unit & have been casting around for workable options.

P.S. As a brand new member on this forum you have already done what many here haven't .....held a Scarlet X in your hands....kudos! :)

Hey!

That sounds very cool! I've got a Dynamic Perseption system as well and an Emotimo pan/Tilt system that I've used in combination. I've used it with a Canon 550D and the Nikon D3 and it has worked great! A little difficult to get the timing right but has worked good for timelapse shooting.

I was also planning on trying the Scarlet with this setup so any information/tips you have would be greatly appreciated. As far as I know there is no way to use a remote trigger to set of the scarlet though? I know the "photo" part isn't really activated yet in the firmware but hopefully they'll get it up and running soon too. :)

I'm hoping the Emotimo can take the weight of the camera (+lens) because it has a video mode as well that can do smooth pan tilts. It's a cheap setup for some nice movements if you need it. :)

Best, Tor

Richard, will be great to read your experiences with this setup. Congrats on new Scarlet.
Mike, looking to Richard's photo, it is maybe an Acuter Merlin or Celestron Skywatcher or something alike (link)

thats exactly right Tor. maybe somewhere down the line the Scarlet will be able to integrate with the MX 2 controller, but for now i use continuous mode and just make sure the move is slow enough as to not create any motion-blur from the dragged exposure. i'll definitely post a link to an article i'm currently writing at the moment. but basically, if one were to time the Scarlet with the controller manually, as long as the single frames are taken between the motion control moves you should, in theory, be able to achieve great results.

Yeah that's what I've been doing as well. Doing continuous move on the Dynamic Perception. But used Shoot-move-shoot setup on the Emotimo. And yeah it can be done that way, but is a little tricky. hehe But that's what experimentation is for. Can't wait to get my scarlet and try it with everything. hehe :)

And yeah looking forward to your article. :)

thanks so much for the comments and links. reduser community rocks!! here's a couple more pics.

Griffith Park Observatory. one of the best locations to shoot at in Los Angeles.

What do you mean by this? Is the canon mount not allowing you to adjust the aperture on the Canon lenses?

Richard is a great person and a very dedicated artist
It was a pleasure to meet and shoot with him
when you have a chance please take a look at his work

the Exposure setting is disabled in the current Scarlet build. in the manual it just says that it is currently unavailable.

Which build are you using?

Thanks for the quick reply Jarred! As usual it was user error...looks like we didn't have the side handle seated correctly and that was causing the the problem. Nothing to see here folks, 2.0.5 is working like a dream!

what about the above post? was this regarding the epic?

I am on the newest build now
I can't recall what build me and Richard shot on as I have been running all over town ; )
But I am pretty sure I updated after we shot

This camera is so incredible.. simply amazing

hey Mike. was going to post the clips on vimeo. but sure, mine as well. as soon as get things

organized and do some basic c.c. i'll post up some R3D's if anyone wants to check them out.

all i'll say is, shooting at Griffith at night definitely tested the limits of this sensor.
