Scarlet-X video review

Sanjin, the versatility of the Red DSMC was essential for my purchase decision. That's one of the key game changing aspects of the new Red Cameras. If I was in the sub 20K price point I would go Scarlet, no question about it. The old, big, chunky shoulder mount form factor is a thing of the past. You can always "add" and configure your camera to a bigger size, but never shrink it. The Red DSMC is a Guerrilla friendly cinema camera- a camera with independent filmmakers in mind. The Alexa and the Sony F65 are old school, "I'm big so I am professional grade" production cameras. They produce great pictures, no doubt, but do not provide the freedom and the consequent creative possibilities the Red DSMC system provides.

Agree 100%, Sergio.

Sebastian, do you have black borders in the final ProRes/DNx file when you record with Samurai? I remember this was the main question of external recorders usability with Epic/Scarlet

got some black black on top and bottom, but that's due to different aspect (4k 2:1), havebn't done extensive testing there. Does Scarlet have a way to set histogram to preview feed instead of RAW? Otherwise no way to measure what exposure goes to Samurai, thus recording is blind as samurai has no histogram...

From the article concerning part 2:
Many of these accessories are also available by RED and other manufacturers. I've contacted most of the manufacturers of 3rd party equipment. However Arri was the only company that was kind enough to lend me their stuff and most importantly provide it on time (2-5 weeks...). Their equipment is equally reliable, certainly this reliability comes at a slightly higher price.
I was not able to get my hands on an acceptable handheld rig solution. While I have received many promises none of the manufacturers delivered samples. I believe a good solution for handheld does not exist at this time or requires some DIY and a lot of assembly. We try to find such a solution in the buyers guide.

Handheld as in shoulder-mounted, or handheld as in DSLR-style, literally hand-held?

I don't understand

What do you mean by "Hand Held" - do you mean a small setup that you hold in two hands, like with the side handle and an additional handle like a wooden camera side handle? Or do you mean a shoulder-rig, like THE CLUTCH, which is commonly referred to as "Hand Held"

If you're referring to the latter... THE CLUTCH is one of the best shoulder rigs on the market.

Yes I'm talking about a shoulder rig. Holding the camera in your hand is usually not a good idea. We've seen lots of trash on HDSLR that was filmed this way... although I must admit, the flat back of the Scarlet makes for acceptable body only handheld moves when pressed against the chest, but the height is usually wrong then.

I haven't tested the clutch but I've tested tons of handheld rigs and when I see a shoulder pad behind the camera body I feel the urge to not even touch such a rig. Sorry but I'm very allergic to bad handheld rigs, the HDSLR revolution has produced lots of waste and lots of products that are simply not made for the job. The clutch may be good in many aspects, but when the weight is not on my shoulder you can count me out. I'm still waiting for that spoon to eat my soup in a world of beautiful expensive forks.

Totally agree, man. Lots of trash rigs in the DSLR world, and I'm sure you've seen more of them than I have. I created my own for the 1D Mark IV when I was shooting with that, and it worked out pretty well. Had it just about perfect, but it was still a pain in the butt (er, shoulder.)

The Clutch, from what I've heard, takes care of the balance problem by putting additional pads in front and in back of your shoulder. Not only does this "grip" your body, helping to balance the rig by bracing it against your chest and back, it also distributes the weight between the three pads, instead of the weight all being on top of your shoulder. Search REDUSER, there is at least one thread that details this pretty well, along with a lot of user tips for using the rig. I believe it's in the DSMC Accessories section.

Based on what I've heard though, I'll be ordering The Clutch as soon as my Scarlet is allocated. It's exactly what I've been looking for, and it seems mighty usable. You may just want to give it a try :)

EDIT: Here's the thread I was talking about http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?65321-THE-CLUTCH

Sebastian,

Any timecode matching issues when using the Atomos Samurai ?
