I really surprised that many Scarlet lovers are complaining here. Sure, it's not the projected 3k that many was hoping for but it's 4k under 10k. Again, it will be more wt extras & such...but still; that is fanastic.

Remember, there is also Canon Cinema 4k DSLR coming out too. If you can't afford the scarlet now or don't like Red's announcement, get the Canon 4k DSLR or possibly the 5D MarkIII. Canons will be lower than Scarlet price point since now they know Red's price structure. They can't compete.

I think many should be happy...like myself. If you need faster fps, rent the Epic. I know their will be Epic owners that would work out a deal for you in trade of your camera on a shoot. Not all Epic owners are going to buy the Scarlet-X. They have the best of Red.

We should all be grateful for having Red here. I know I am.

Just my 2 cents.

I dont get why people are freaking out....

The canon 1dX is gonna be $7,000 MSRP. This camera is about double that, but look at what you get.....

From the samples I saw of the C300 footage, I actually think that F3 XDCAM-EX footage shot w/ a hypergamma looks better. Very unscientific and subjective (but I think I can honestly say not biased, as I like Canon more than Sony). I just really wasn't impressed by the image quality considering how many excellent competing cameras are out there.

Neither of those is a valid replacement for the original Scarlet concept - quite frankly, nothing is. And that's why we miss it.

The C300 doesn't actually produce 4k... At all. It's 1080P max.

After i look at the Scarlet -x I think you may as well save up for a Epic... I mean 48-60fps is what going to be the future plus the epic have more that one like my self will need. I am starting saving for an epic The 1st of the year and hopefully i can have it by 2013. This really give me time to line up sone stuff and write some good shit to shoot. i order a cam to get the ball rolling but i want that epic

Canon mentioned an upcoming future 4K DSLR after the Scarlet announcement.

I see.

Do ex-Scarlet hopefuls really want to migrate from waiting 3 years for one unreleased camera to waiting x years for another one? I suppose many will, but if I were one of those I'd be askIng myself some tough questions... like "Am I in this for the camera, or am I in this for the waiting game?

I agree. We were not looking for a S35 sensor, but for a compact ENG/EFP cam with REDCODE.

Canon should be out before NAB....

My unscientific, but hands-on eye tells me the 1DX actually produces a better picture than the C300 under nearly any circumstance - and of course they aren't even in the same league as scarlet - but if I was forced to use a canon I'd pick the 1dX over the C300.

it really is a pretty great deal. If we call the Scarlet-X a $20k camera with a decent set of accessories and plenty of media and power (not including glass) then it still seems like a great deal. You are basically getting the best camera for shooting 2k on the planet (by down rerezzing or potentially cropping down from 4k and 3k RAW) as well as a pretty handy stills camera and something that can go out to 4k moton with the loss of some features. It is functionally identical to the Epic about 90% of the time for me at what amounts to about 2/7 of the price. The Epic is already a tremendous value when compared with the competition. That makes the Scarlet's price point just unreal unless you arthe kind of director and/or DP who makes extensive use of slow motion or is going to be severely inhibited by not being able to use HDRx at 4k.

Something that I find appealing is that once you have your workflow and kit sorted for scarlet-x you're all set should you need to use Epic. My understanding is that there won't be much of a learning curve, if any, between the 2 cameras. Not only that but your rig should work with Epic too so you can just rent the brain and off you go. No unexpected surprises in post either - assuming you're already set with scarlet.

Exactly! And if you ever decide that you want to upgrade down the road then all you will need to buy is the brain and you're set. The point of entry to Red's ecosystem may be more painful as a result of the change from a 2/3" sensor, but the upgrade path is made considerably less painful because of the comparability with PL and Canon lenses, which the Epic uses too, obviously.

Most of my generic video shooting will be at 2k using 16mm lenses. If it looks as good as 2k on Epic it will be fine. I will really miss 3k at 120fps though, and I still think Red should make the 3k or QHD S16mm Scarlet interchangeable. There is a healthy market for the smaller format with 120fps frame rates for action sports, nature shooting, docs, etc. with at least Alexa class resolution. If a 120fps S16 brain with a PL mount was the same price as Scarlet X, I would buy it instead.

Scarlet X is nice, especially for what is likely to be Epic image quality and for 5k stills. But it is both more and less than the original Scarlet concept in performance and features.

From the way Jim described the lens issues with the fixed version, I would bet it would have wound up at $10k by the time they corrected the problem due to increased cost of lens construction. Truly unfortunate.
