I've been reading a lot about the Scarlet/Epic update lately and I have a couple quick questions for the readers of this site. Is the Epic/Scarlet system going to replace the RED One? If not, will the price of the RED One drop? After all, I'd imagine that the Scarlet/Epic will be much more advanced in comparison, but maybe I'm wrong.

There will be an end to the RED ONE... production that is. We learned that it wasn't infinitely upgradeable as we had originally thought. That's why we have given all RED ONE owners a chance at full trade in allowance towards the EPIC system.

Having said that, there are many who want to keep as continue to use their R1s. We will support the RED ONE for many years to come. It changed history and deserves proper respect from all of us at RED.

Jim, I'm glad that you've made that decision. I think a lot of people saw it coming, but you're definitely taking the right steps forward. Epic is a much more capable camera at a higher price point while the Scarlet is stepping up right underneath and is almost as capable. The best part is that current owners will still get support.

Does this mean that as soon as the Epic is out, the RED One will no longer be for sale? If you can't trade it in at that point in the future, what's the point of continuing to sell it?

I'm planning on keeping my newly purchased RED ONE for quite some time, and also will likely upgrade the sensor to M-X when available. REDONE-X is all the camera I need for the next decade!

There will be a market for used, factory restored and M-X upgraded RED ONEs for some time... I'd expect.

Red One in gates housing

Red One in gates housing

Jim that is encouraging as I just received my brand new Red One and a Gates underwater housing. I am in a unique situation where, even if I want to upgrade to Epic it will require re-engineering of the underwater housing to accommodate the Epic. My brand new camera is experiencing a strange boot up problem which Sean is helping me through as I am loathed to send back my new camera as I live in a remote area in Northern Australia and the down time is undesirable as my business now revolves around RED. I hope that Red One is supported by RDC for the life of my camera.
cheers

Thanks for the response, it really shows your company's respect for the customers (and prospective customers).

I can't wait to hear what you have in store for us October 30th. I just hope that new RED customers will get a chance to be Beta testers.

I imagine Red's will continue to be around for quite a while. Even if there will be better tools, that doesn't mean that the Red will not be "enough" for what most of us want to do.

I also imagine that Red's capabilities will continue to expand with occasional firmware upgrades.

I mean the Red One was good enough for multiple big budget professional productions BEFORE 4.5K and the new Color Science.

Perhaps some sort of Academic Option could be created. I spoke with someone from RED over the phone, as my school was working on trying to purchase a RED for a discount, or get it donated. The answer was "The way our company is now, we couldn't donate or give large discounts to universities. But when the time is right, RED will definitely give back to the community." Maybe old RED One trade-in models could be the solution to this? I can tell you right now my school would jump on that opportunity.

Let's get this straight (for the 2nd time on this topic). We cannot afford to give cameras away to anyone. It is not in our business model. If we charged more for everything, it might be a different story. Additionally, who is to say that one school should get something free and another should pay? Or should we just give every school around the world a free camera?

Our contribution to this industry is to pay for development of "future cameras". And then deliver them at the cheapest price possible to get them in the hands of as many as possibly... and not go broke in the process.

Now if you want to donate your RED ONE to a school of your choice when you buy an EPIC...

We will give back to the community... but in a way that we choose.

5000-6000 Red 1s that will be replaced soon by Epic...
Has anyone giving some thought about the environment or are we all into making money?

Hi David,

Epic uses less power & generates less heat than RED one.

I was writing about the 5000-6000 Red 1s bodies and accessories that will be replaced soon.

I don't think they will be sent to the landfill if that is what you mean. They are robust well made cameras that have years of useful life left in them. They will be around for a long time.

But aren't Red owners in the trade up deal will send them back to Red?
Will Red resale them?
Are we going to have around 12,000 bodies circling around the globe from the same home made?

There is something ridiculous about this thread. Have you all seen the Book of Eli trailer? What more can you want than image quality like that? Some people here are writing as if Red is obsolete once Epic hits the market; I expect it is more like this: excellent as Red is, the difference with Epic maybe more apparent in tests than on a cinema screen. Audiences may very well never see a difference

I think you are right, but question is what 5000-6000 Red1s owners will do?
I am going to put my Red One inside an Epic body and tell everyone that it is an Epic...
