  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet X and your choice of Lense(s)

Here's a question for you folks: what's the widest zoom you would put on a Scarlet?

How about the Sigma 8-16mm?

Reasons I'm considering it are: I have some stuff in mind that will need extreme wide angle; I need a zoom as the kind of shot will not allow me to reposition the camera to compose it, I'll have to zoom; and I'm not worried about vignetting or edge optical performance, and I need the extreme focal length, as I'll be shooting pretty much exclusively 3k HDRx, for a 2K finish. Breathing and zoom behavior is not an issue, will be shot exclusively as a variable prime with no focus racking.

Anyone tried it? Have thoughts about it? Reviews I've seen tend to be mixed. Not worried about autofocus or whether it's programmed into the firmware as everything is in focus at those focal lengths!

Mike

Mike,

I think your answer is in your own question. :) The only other zoom that wide is the new Canon and its triple the price (speaking from memory here not sure exactly). If you need that very specific shot, with that very specific detail of needing to zoom then you dont have much choice. The 8mm gives you a 16mm FF35 FOV which is a pretty sexy FOV if you ask me! But you may still get significant edge distortion even with the 2x crop at 3k.

I'd be super interested to see what you come up with!

Thanks Dane, distortion I can live with, was more interested in answers like 'it's no Master Prime but it's fine for 2K finish at that price' or 'it's a POS lens; avoid at all costs'.

I think I'll hit B&H whenever they open (guess even B&H will close tomorrow!) and let you know the results. Heck I'll *post* results!

Thanks

*Jarvis had asked for advice on lenses for narrative use with a budget of 6k.

Hi Jarvis, I try to keep my head low unless I really know what I'm talking about. And while there are many far more experienced users on here than I. I've just spent several weeks researching pretty much this exact scenario, (going half mad) prob put about 100 + hours into reading reviews, histories, sites, charts, etc, while comparing performance and pricing on multiple possible variations of sets I could look to put together, on a budget close to yours, for the purpose of narrative film making. I have also had many conversations/email exchanges with opinions from some of the industries best. So my advice also reflects that which was graciously given to me. So I think I can post some help.

Option #1
Simplicity plus the best cinema quality available close to your budget is to get a battle tested 18-85 Red Pro.
http://www.red.com/store/battle-test...-85mm-t29-i-bt
That's the pro. And that's a BIG one.

Cons:
Big & heavy.
Widest FOV 29mm with the 1.6 crop. Though at 85 you've essentially got the FOV of having a 135mm lens in your kit.
At 2.9, not super fast.
Budget - PL mount is extra $. Any additional glass is exxy and renting also is of course more expensive.
Correct me if I'm wrong anyone - but I think it would actually be cheaper to get Scarlet with an AL canon mount.
and an All star mount + All star PL adapter.

I probably would have gone this route if it was not for: The extra cost of the PL mount $1500 + duty and tax on a 6K item coming into Aus (add about another grand) which I can avoid buying separate prime lenses for under 1k. This came close but blew my budget. And for me the Tokina 11-16 with the 1.6 crop is a bit of a must have lens. So I had to add another $700 approx.
Also the weight/support and lesser ability to be inconspicuous for guerilla were concerns.

Option #2
Canon Zooms + Tokina
These options are well documented on Scarlet RU lens threads already. **NEW EDIT** SUCH AS THIS ONE :))
Simplest is to get a Tokina 11 - 16
Canon 24-70
Canon 70-200
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...ephoto_EF.html
And with your 6K budget pick up perhaps a 35 1.4L prime and if you got the 70-200 F4 a 50 1.2 or 85 1.2 as well (which is said to be pretty stellar) Personally if I was going Canon with 6K approx for narrative, I'd probably get a Tokina 11-16, 24, 35 and 50 fast L primes and a 70-200F4.

Fantastic kit really. And when compared to what Indie's have been making films with for many years... man we are just so spoilt to even be able to consider turning up our noses at this sort of a set up these days :) Amazing times to be an Indie film maker.

Cons:
There has been debate about the quality of the wider focal length zooms for 4k.
They are not designed for cine work unlike the RP 18-85 or the much more favourable build and focus throw of the Zeiss or Leica still lenses. Which brings us to option...

Leica R

You won't hear a bad word. Which at 6k is one of the problems, there's a great thread on Leica R lenses hear on RU.
http://reduser.net/forum/showthread....et-in-Canon-EF
But the 8k prices Matt has put together his 7 lense set for have become inflated since then. (I was gutted) Even with a set of 6 not 7, if you want the lenses which are the known performers, then A) you have to be willing to do a lot of research, which then leads you to B) Once Cine modded + Leitax adapters, I was coming out closer to 9K. Which is still fantastic, if you have 9k. I didn't. But if you ditched the modding and or got lucky or took a couple of compromises, such as the slower but awesome - 35-70 F4 Leica zoom you could certainly still put a kit together with a 6k budget. But fwiwi, Sanjin (resident lord of Leica around these parts :)) advised me to get an 18-85 RP at around this budget point if you had Indie features in mind.

That said, if your keen, or someone else who goes this way, (Especially of you have closer to 10K) the best places to look are Leica Vintage store, KEH and last imo, ebay. Note: I also found German Ebay (+ online translator :)) as another great way to find some particular lenses that sometimes weren't coming up on ebay international.

The lens performance survey

* Note another option is Leica zooms. The 35 - 70 F4 is a true Leica and high quality - if you don't mind the speed loss.
* the 70-180 is killer by all reports also.
* Stick an R 21mm Super angulon with it and you should be able to have this kit cine modded for around 6K

Another zoom option is the newer 28-90mm 2.8 - 4.5. Not cheap at around (3200-4000 usd usually) obviously varied aperture and not super fast.
But very high quality glass with most major focal lengths covered. Though some have said it doesn't have as much Leica character as other lenses,
such as the strongly recommended 35-70 F4.

Zeis ZE

As mentioned, you can pre buy cine modded of Mr Duclos's site. But with 6K, you won't get far enough.
Especially if you note that the cheapest lens the 50 1.4 is by all reports not a great lens. (get the 50 macro instead if going this route)
You can try buying second hand as recommended, I came across a few "relative" bargains on ebay. Two even pre cine modded. But with 6K Aus import and shipping and Duclos modding, you can manage a second hand 28, 35, 50macro and 85 cine modded and shipped for 6K I'd say - less if your lucky. But the problem (it was mine) is that you still don't have your 21mm - essentially your 35 FOV on the crop. And I just couldn't find anything cheaper than about $1700 these past weeks. Don't think it exists. Though you may fluke it. And also you'll still need another wider lens such as the Tokina 11-16. So with Cine mods and the 21mm, once again your closer to 9K.

Which brings me to where I arrived...

Zeiss Contax glass

This is a fantastic thread from the past fortnight odd, which I would have KILLED to have been able to read a couple of months ago.
The thread is all well worth reading, I've linked it to Nick Morrisons fantastic post of Contax glass.

http://reduser.net/forum/showthread....E-Primes/page4

I also highly recommend
Leitax again (great links to fred Miranda related threads tests and the like)

SLR lens review
http://slrlensreview.com/web/carl-ze...ns-review.html

The prob again is that you have to fork out on the 21mm which is going for close to the same as a new Zeiss ZE 21mm.
But I still "personally" found with the Contax prices still available at some focus lengths, after a bit of research, it was the best bang for buck way that I could put the fullest range of suitable cine modded quality primes onto a Scarlet with a 7K budget (Again for narrative use) But ultimately that's still not why I made my decision to go Contax, I actually fell in love with some specific lenses and THAT's what made all the difference in making decisions for me. Otherwise your potentially always looking over your shoulder with Leica envy :) Or going, stuff this, life's too short and those EF lenses are good to go!

Unfortunately we all could have put high quality Leica R or Contax kits together 4 years ago for half the price :(((

But whatever your potential lens choice, you need to research and shop around obviously, Contax needs some strong research, but with Leica, and all the versions and names etc, you really need to research strongly. I loved it TBH, learnt a lot, but it can be truly maddening when you can't quite seem to achieve what you want within your budget.

* Please note: The Nikkor option has already been well covered, and I don't have anything to add.
* Also this is obviously not an extensive list of possibilities of course.

NOTE: There are also the lens discussion threads already on RED user with a few good pre existing ones in the Scarlet section.
The best friend tool for newbies on here I think is this link...

It probably should be the first sticky on the Scarlet section.

Anyhow, hope that saves you and others on a similar budget, with similar aims, a shit load of time mate.

I think that today the best cost/benefit is a set of Zeiss ZF's
i also added the Tokina 11-16. When I got that I sold my 18mm, so now my slowest lens is 2.8 which is acceptable.
In the beginning I had gotten the 25 2.8, but it really wasn't up to par with the other lenses, so I swapped that out for the 28 2.0 and I'm much happier.
my last acquisition was the 35 1.4. Beautifully glass. Sold my 35 2.0
so the set is now:
Tokina 11-16 2.8
21 2.8
28 2.0
35 1.4
50 1.4
85 1.4
100 2.8

Being that it's the same glass than the CP's I think the speed of the ZF's are a major plus. Once you cine modify the lenses you have a beautifully and workable set. I got my cine mods done at RP Lens. Peter does a fantastic job at that.

There was actually a question posted on CML about this. Some of the Tokina's are soft in certain areas. Not sure if it's a particular defect of if all of the lenses suffer from this. Regardless, I'll post with what they've said. For the price point you still cannot beat it. There is also a $40 discount on B&H.

Also, now that I am looking at the Scarlet-X data sheet, the Tokina 11-16mm is a 1.6x crop factor so does that mean 11mm is actually 17.6mm in 4k? I am also curious if this holds true for the canon 24-70 (38.4mm at 24mm in 4k)

These are the two lenses I will start off for everyday use and rent cine lenses when necessary.

Mike,
Ive used the angenieux 5.9 on my red and epic at 2k and it looks pretty good. You don't even need an AC as there is no focus on the lens.

Re Tokina, probably wide open on the edges you would think.... Still it's just so well beyond bang for buck, it's the go to lens everyone seems to be in agreement on.

Re the crop factor, yes, FOV wise. Just times everything by 1.6. But you'll get jumped on for saying it's 17.6mm as the focal length is still 11mm, but your field of view
due to the crop is now equivalent to a 17mm field of view yes - IF you are using as your point of reference a full frame sensor. Referring everything back to FF also tends to drive a few people mad :) as really we are actually working with a sensor size the equivalent to what most motion pictures have been made with and the pre supposition of measuring via FF which is more considered to be a photography FOV seems to frustrate.

I have the Red 18-85 and I love it. It is a big guy, but it gives a nice balance to such a small camera.

Ill be getting the 11-16 zoom along with some nikon primes later on, but right now the 18-85 is just right for what I need.

Hey Liam, can't believe you read and QUOTED my post! I've been slowly posting about my CZ glass on reduser for the past month, and didn't think anyone had noticed. I definitely DO think they are another great option, in league with Nikkors, Leica's, etc. It's vintage glass, so it has a unique look that I enjoy. They are the cousins of the current Zeiss ZF/ZE glass, and are optically probably 95% identical. But the T* coatings are allegedly a little different - less contrasy and cold. Which I think is actually kind of good. AND...the amazing thing about them is they made over 40 different lenses. There are possibly no more than 10 ZF's to choose from, but the Contax line is chock full of fabulous gems. They are quite easy to find on ebay...but they are hard to COMPLETE the set. This is old vintage glass, and once you start getting to those 4 or 5 final gems you need, they are few and far between. So...to invest in these certainly requires a huge amount of patience. But as I'm almost done with my collection, it will only be a month or two left before I have my COMPLETE set. Once I cinemod them and our Scarlets arrive, I will post pics and footage.

Thanks for noticing!

Hi guys and girls. Had my Scarlet X kit on order since Dec 6th in the UK and am just looking at what I have from my Panasonic AF101 kit that will still be useable.

In addition to the Micro 4/3 lenses I need to offload, I currently have the Nikon AI 35mm f2.8, 50mm f1.4 and a Nikkor Q 135mm f2.8 sitting around here.

Do you think it's worth keeping hold of them for use with the Scarlet or should I get rid of those too and head towards ZF.2s or similar?

Not a lens question but does anyone know whether the Shoot35 Cine Baseplate will be compatible with the Scarlet or if I should get rid of that too? Thanks in advance :)

2K is also the only place the Sigma 8-16 will work. I did an extremely quick and dirty test when I was in Adorama on other business the other day. This showed that 1. AF is... definitely flaky; hardly surprising as the lens isn't officially supported yet, and 2. well... see for yourself:

3K @ 8mm:

All in all it's about as much use as a chocolate condom... hell I never liked Sigma glass anyway.

I like the FOV of the Nikon 14-24mm @14mm on a FF35 sensor, and I LOVE the quality... Still need to find the ideal piece of glass that will match the Nikon for quality and give me the same FOVs at both 5K (for stills) and 3K (for HDRx motion) on EPIC/Scarlet...

Hey Nick. Cool :))) Yeah definitely paying attention and appreciating :) Your post is terrific and enjoyed all your footage lens samples. MADE ME DAMN HUNGRY THOUGH!

I have to say I "personally" prefer the look coming off the vintage Zeiss glass, though I appreciate the coatings on the ZE are said to be better and they are likely sharper in general overall. But that said, I've certainly read reports stating otherwise for some specific lenses, and personally I certainly wouldn't be interested in getting the non macro 50 ZE vs a 50 contax 1.4 or 1.7.

But anyway, as you know and appreciate there are so many ways that lenses seem to create/draw their look, that I hunted for the individual characteristics of specific lenses that resolved the way that appealed to me and my work. Such as the mint 100 F2 on it's way to me :) Some lenses just really pop or render colour for certain settings in a way that really resonated with me. Whereas the ZE on Shane Hurlburts latest tests were a little disappointing and were probably the least favourite of the lenses for me, which surprised. It almost seemed to me (purely wild conjecture here) that perhaps the added sharpness across the lens meant some of the famed micro contrast pop look of the contax was almost evened out and rendered less pop so to speak. But so many variables, who knows. SO I just went with what my eyes were seeing.

Funny though, I keep hearing the exact same optics are in the CP's but they also ooked better in each comparison than the ZE I thought? Especially the motion rack focus of the guitarist at the end. Looked like a genuine Cine lens then to me, even though they are getting a bit slammed around the traps - I'm sure with good raeson from those two. 85 1.4 Leica looked stunning I thought.

Anyhow, look forward to seeing pictures of your set! Your will definitely be bigger than mine :)) But I'll post mine too once they are all modded/duclos cine blinged up :)
Maybe we can start a RU Contax set with Scarlet thread! :)

Best Wishes

Lliam
