  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet X and your choice of Lense(s)

I will use a set of Minolta MD Rokkors that I own with a Fotodiox adapter at first with the Canon mount and vintage 16mm lenses on the PL mount for 2k video. May be awhile before I can afford new glass after getting a basic Scarlet package.

It will be mostly a hobby camera for me. The kind of industrial video or event docs I shoot for pay will work just fine at 2k.

Is anyone considering using 16mm Pl glass for run and gun work? Many broadcasters would happily except 2K, you could shoot at extra frame rates and 16mm glass is becoming cheaper currently because of the retirement of many super 16mm cameras. The zeiss 16mm zooms especially the 10-100mm rocks for handheld work.
Does anyone know how much of the sensor a 16mm cine lens would cover before vignetting?

I will just be using my Canon EF 24-105 F4L IS lens. It goes from pretty wide to modest telephoto, and has fantastic IS. Not very fast, but for now it will do the job just fine.

This is my point exactly. At 24mm you'll be getting more of a 38mm which wouldn't be wide at all. The crop factor shooting at 4k kinda stinks for selecting lenses.

A set of Nikon G:s + zooms to complement the set (thinking about throwing a RED lens in there... not sure yet though!).

Had some ideas for Illuminas but the price has sort of scared me away... for now :-)

The 4K portion of the sensor is pretty close to the standard S35.

Yeah it's a shame. I had set my mind on a 24-70mm Canon zoom, but in addition I will need something wide - I really like shooting wide and get a lot of details, and a lot of deep DOF.

For anyone who hasn't seen it, http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?66210-Scarlet-X-Data-Sheet
Phil Holland's Scarlet-X Data Sheet is a brilliant resource. Downloadable. Free. Save it. Print it out.
Crop factors of various lenses (by mm) at various capture settings (4K, 3K, 2K,) in easy to follow visual graphs.
Pages of great lens info on the thread too.

David, FYI a TRUE Minolta MD to EOS adapter does not exist. The Fotodiox require an OPTICAL adapter that will degrade the quality of your fantastic Rokkor's. The only way to get the minolta's on the Scarlet will be for a lens technician to CHANGE the mount of each lens to EOS, which is a huge pain in the ass.

Hope this helps.

My father owns a massive set of Rokkor's, so I've been looking into this as well...

The bigger shame is that there aren't many quality primes out there in the still world below 20mm. I believe that will change in 2012. I think we'll see new 20mm, 18mm, 12mm, and 10mm primes from different companies. Hopefully they land in the f/2 to f/1.8 territory.

Until that time comes I'm so far "okay" with the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 my Scarlet. Did a few tests on it today. It's certainly a lot of bang for the buck.

T2.8's are doable at those Focal lengths, but making a 16mm T2 is REALLLY REALLY hard, and thus expensive. Cinema <T2.0 18mm primes are 9-10k for a reason.

I'll be using my Canon K-35s or Zeiss Superspeeds MKI. I'm also very eager to slap my old and tiny Kinoptiks on there. Should be a wicked combo. I'm a big fan of older glass :)

I'll be using my array of Nikon lenses. Tokina 11 - 16, Nikon 17 -35 f2.8, Nikon 35 f1.4, Nikon 50 f1.4, Nikon 85 f1.4, Tamron 90mm f2.5 macro, Tokin 80 - 200 f2.8.

Although I am looking to replace the Tokina 80 - 200 with something a little better at the long end.

Ordered the Scarlet PL (as soon as the servers stopped being wonky), and to begin I'll use the first versions of the RED 18-50 & 50-150 that I've been using on my AF100's for the last year. Those two lenses have covered about 95% of the work I've done, with the occasional rental of something wider / longer.

Ditto here, and I will add my Duclos 11-16mm pl as well.

Well, I only have a few canon lenses that I'll be using:
24mm 1.2l,
TSE 28mm,
50mm 1.2 and 100mm macro L (that i find really really good)

Otherwhile I have my set of nikon's:
Fisheye af-s 10.5 mm 2.8,
Sigma 10-20mm 3.5,
af-s 17-55mm 2.8,
af-s 50mm 1.4,
af-s 85mm 1.4,
af-s 105 macro 2.8,
200mm 4
+ a 24mm PCE 3.5.

I'd like a RPZ 17-50 or 18-85 but later ;)

Here's a question for you folks: what's the widest zoom you would put on a Scarlet?

How about the Sigma 8-16mm?

Reasons I'm considering it are: I have some stuff in mind that will need extreme wide angle; I need a zoom as the kind of shot will not allow me to reposition the camera to compose it, I'll have to zoom; and I'm not worried about vignetting or edge optical performance, and I need the extreme focal length, as I'll be shooting pretty much exclusively 3k HDRx, for a 2K finish. Breathing and zoom behavior is not an issue, will be shot exclusively as a variable prime with no focus racking.

Anyone tried it? Have thoughts about it? Reviews I've seen tend to be mixed. Not worried about autofocus or whether it's programmed into the firmware as everything is in focus at those focal lengths!

Mike
