  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet-X 256...O'Hara settled in at the bottom of the Rockies

So I shot some stuff today and was really unimpressed with the 24-70 2.8L, might be selling that lens to pick up a few primes in it's place. Not going to post what I shot today. It was extremely overcast and freezing so I didn't get to shoot much. I'm setting up a week in Breck right now where I'll really get to put together something I want to share. I'll post some stills later.
Not much of a Canon guy, so i can't say I've tested many of the Canon lenses, but did shoot with Zac with his 28-70 and I don't know what to make of that lens. Seemed a bit soft to me. But Zac can probably add more on that as he'll be spending more time with the lens on his Scarlet. I might also just be really used to cine glass and my Nikons. :-)

Dude! I'm still waiting but am really happy that yours has arrived...for some reason, I feel like you have been waiting longer than everyone! hehe :) Congrats!

I've had a lot of conversations with both you and Jeff about it, and we all agree the 24-70 is a bit soft. But I'll have to find some better lenses to work with now.

First off, great first name, and congrats on finally receiving your Scarlet. Got a name yet?

I'd like to know your post workflow for these shots.

What I'm really interested in is did you get the slow-mo 48fps shots of the deer out of RCX or did you have to slow them down in some other NLE?

I'm becoming more and more familiar with RCX, but your test shots made me curious about variable frame rates exported from RCX.

Anyone else have experience or a workflow they use for slow-mo/variable speed work? Or point me to a link if it's posted somewhere else.

Congrats again Jeffrey! Have fun!

Congrats on the SX.

Off topic, but are there any moderately cheap stills zooms that are sharp? I was thinking of using the 24-70L as my go-to, but you guys are making me think that's a bad idea. I'd like a zoom that resolves as much as (older) 50 & 85mm AI Nikkors.... It's hard to make stuff look bad with those.

Just updated the first post with a couple of Screen grabs from testing the Scarlet at night in Downtown Denver. Pretty happy with the results thus far.

Jeffrey, footage or it didn't happen :) (Pictures don't count!)

Mike,

I like the 24-70 in some situations. I found it to be soft last night, and the day before, it just doesn't give me what I'm looking for. Of the lenses I own, I went to the Canon 50mm 1.4 most of the night and it gave me what I was looking for. The only other lens I used was the 70-200 2.8L IS II. It performed beyond my expectations. I plan on selling the 24-70 to pick up the 35mm 1.4L lens. I just am not really using it. It's a great lens, it was my go to on my 7D at times. You can get some of the Manual focus Nikon lenses that are pretty sharp. There not to expensive either. But I'd get an allstar a mount, or wait for RED's Nikon mount.

It's coming Sergio. I am looking for the right song. Don't get your hopes up to much though It's not as good as some others work on here, I just went out and shot what I thought would be interesting. Hope it's up to acceptable standards :)

Jeff, great name as well. The camera is named O'Hara. I'm still figuring out the post workflow at this point. For the slow mo though you set the project in the Scarlet to 23.976, and then shoot 3K at 48 fps, and it comes out of the camera already slowed down. I'm doing this with my 4K footage as well. I'm shooting at 30, for a 23.976fps project just to give it that little soft touch I like. I'm yet to do anything outside the camera like twixtor, but I might venture into that today just to see what I get.

Is that volkswagen shot with the 50mm at ISO800@1.4? It looks pretty pimp, and assuming it looks like that in motion, I'd be all over it.

As for primes; I just hate having to switch when I'm running around and, you know, gunning... Conversely, PL zooms are so damned big that I wouldn't realistically be able to run and gun with them either (17-50 is not my preferred shooting range...18-85 or 24-70 covers pretty much everything I want, alas, 18-85PL is massive and 24-70EOS might be too soft.) In any case, thanks for giving me your 2cents... and that Volks shot is definitely what I'd be interested in from a low-light perspective.

Yup 800, 50mm right at 1.8. But it's the 1.4 lens. Let me know if you want the .r3d. It was kind of a lucky shot so it's brief, but it will allow you to see it how I see it.

Won't be editing until I figure out how to get Premiere Pro to allow me to bring in .r3d files. it did before, but for some reason it no longer will. I Updated to 5.5.2 since it wouldn't with the normal 5.5. It still says it won't, or they're not recognized or supported.

Epic importer server from adobe labs, google it. I would grab you the link, but i better post this before i pass out.

Ok so since I'm slow with editing here is a .r3d to play with. It's lowlight, it's 3K, it's 48 fps, it involves smoke, lights and cars! It was shot on my 50 1.4 if I remember correctly. If not it was shot on my 70-200 2.8.

It was a very fun night to shoot. Lots of people and life around the city, for Denver. Like Phil said in his post recently, It's surprising how many people know about RED. I had atleast 3-4 people ask and take a look at it, 2-3 drunk guys tell me RED rocks, and a couple more go did you see that guy walking really fast with the RED?

It was kind of a surreal experience to be on this side of it. Usually I'm the one curious how they got it or what they're shooting. It's very humbling. I stopped and showed most the camera, of course I held it but it's a delight to get others a feel for it and excited about something even if it's only a few moments.

Ok finally some footage. These are the shots I was doing to see what I could get the Scarlet to do in lowlight. I'll also add to the first post: If you want any .r3d files from this video just let me know! Watch in Original or 1080p.
