SCARLET without DSMC Side Handle

yes. without a redvolt module you need the ac power adapter or legacy items.

I do believe so, but then you can only power via the power adapter (or old red bricks? not sure about that, but think i saw that in ketch rossi's epic unboxing video).

yes, a lot of guys without side handles or redvolt modules are using their red bricks. they power the camera longer than a redvolt, but they are much more bulky as well.

I see. I think I may have made my question sound a little confusing. I'm planning on using a REDVOLT Module (the Dual or Quad one). If I do, then will I still need a DSMC Side Handle? I would think that I would be able to control the camera using the REDMOTE and RED Touch 5.0" LCD, so the Side Handle seems unnecessary.

The original post asks if it's possible to configure Scarlet without the side handle but with redvolts.

The answer is yes, it works exactly like Epic. You don't need a side handle in your kit in order to power or operate the camera, providing you use a battery module along with a touchscreen or redmote.

Ah, okay. That's what I was asking. Sorry everyone if I made my question sound a little confusing.

Thanks! =)

I've got a question along these lines.

I think (please correct me if I'm wrong) that getting this with V mount batteries: http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?65432-VF-Brook-s-APU-Battery-Plates

Along with a Redmote and small third party HDMI or HDSDI monitor, would be cheaper than, last longer than, and have all the same functionality as, DSCM handle + Red Volt batteries + 5" Touchscreen LCD.

Is this correct? Is there anything that the side handle and/or Touchscreen can allow me to do that the Redmote cannot? And this may be the dumbest question of all; Redmote makes me thing Remote which makes me thing Portable or separated from the camera body. But in every picture I see it's attached.

Scarlet ended up a bit pricier than I was hoping (not complaining; it's more price for more function) so I'm trying to eek out the cheapest working package I can to start, and then add on modules as I get jobs to pay for them. Any advice on where I can trim money (even if it's a temporary stop-gap that I'll be replacing or upgrading in 6 months to a year) would be SUPER appreciated.

Whoa whoa, so you can control the camera and all its functionality solely via the 5.0 Touch Screen?

So as a basic kit:
Scarlet-X Brain (SSD module + AL Canon + AC adapter) $9750
5.0 Touch $1600
Scarlet Media Package (1.8" 64GB REDmag + REDmagreader) $1200
--------
$12,550

Is everything that you'd need to run it, but you'd attached to an outlet. Is there any battery solution for $450? If so, that'd be swell. I'd much rather do it this way, rather than having to deal with getting the Class-9 batteries across the border via shipping.

Not to my knowledge. Without purchasing a REDVolt module the cheapest solution would be to buy a Belt Clip and adapter cable. Would cost $480. And you would still need a brick for $450.

Using my Marshall 5" HDMI monitor with Redmote instead of the 5" Touch Screen?

Using my Marshall 5" HDMI monitor with Redmote instead of the 5" Touch Screen?

As I understand it there are 3 ways to control the Scarlet X brain:

Redmote = $550
Side Handle = $950
5" Touch Screen = $1600

Since I already have a Marshall 5" HDMI monitor can I just use this with a Redmote instead of buying the 5" Touch Screen? Is there something I'm missing? Does the HDMI output of the Scarlet X show me all the necessary OSD/information overlays that I'll need to see to operate the camera?

I'm planning on powering the camera with a Goldmount or V Lock solution since the shorter runtime of a redvolt will not work for my needs.

When looking under purchase options for a Scarlet body you see "Display: RED Touch 5" LCD or BOMB EVF (BOMB EVF requires DSMC Side Handle or REDMOTE to navigate menu)"
This tells us that everything is entirely controllable by either the RED Touch 5" LCD, DSMC Side Handle, or the REDMOTE. Any should suffice.

Good spot. Redmote it is. I wish the Red store had a few more details about things. I'm trying to learn as much as I can before I make the purchase, and make sure I get everything I need to actually SHOOT something once I get it. Kinda hard to make my money back if the dang thing don't work yet.

You're gonna need something to view what you're shooting, so RED touch or EVF are pretty much required... If you can control it with just the RED Touch, that's killing two birds with one stone. If a battery clip and REDbrick are only ~$980 and I can buy them locally (used for cheaper?), that saves me shipping issues and is still almost $500 less than the kit... How much longer do REDbricks last compared to REDvolts with Epic? If it's double the time, that might be worthwhile... plus belt pack seems ideal for handheld or setup to counter-weight the camera.

The RED Brick batteries last MUCH longer than Redvolts, more than twice, more like four times plus.

I know I'll need a screen. Planning on getting a little HDMI or HDSDI monitor for I think around $300-$400, rather than the $1500 Touchscreen. Monitor+Redmote would be under $1k, rather than the $1.5k touchscreen.
