Hi

I've ordered the Scarlet W, and have some questions about best setup of gear and teqnical specs. Im new at working with RED cameras, and hope that some of your more skilled RED owners can help me out;)

Thanks
/Conny Fridh

1
Where can I find a overview to how much media(running time) RED min mag cards hold when used on the Scarlet W?

2
When I have both the new EVF and LCD 4,7 connected to my Scarlet W, will I have a picture in both of these at the same time? I have been told otherwise from people, and it seems strange. I work handheld and in a documentary style and would need to have this possibility.
* DSMC²™ RED® EVF (OLED
* DSMC²™ RED Touch 4.7" LCD

3
Can the Scarlet W record only Pro Res?(not RAW) If you for some work do not need RAW.

4
Does the Pro Res 422HQ files contain16,5 stops of dynamic range also?

5
If I connect a A-box from Woodencamera to the DSMC² BASE EXPANDER. How will I be able to use the sound in my editing? Will the two XLR microphone be mixed in to one audio track or splitt in to two separate? (Premiere Pro)

I would like to use a shotgun mic and a wire less microphone (interview mic on a person)

6
Side Handle to Scarlet W.
Have anyone heard if or when this will come? I would need to control EF-lenses (iris, shutter) via this side handle.

7
Power consumption
If I to my Scarlet W put on a LCD 4,7 + EVF(OLED) + Side handle(the upcoming one) How can I calculate the running time of a V-mount battery? Need a light weight solution for documentary style filming. At least 1,5 hour / battery.

1. http://www.red.com/tools/recording-time

The DSMC2 camera's aren't listed yet, but if you choose 'EPIC DRAGON' and 'RED MINI-MAG - (Higher speed)' you'll get a rough idea (to within a few minutes) of what to expect.

As an example, the Scarlet-W has a maximum data rate of 140 MB/sec, which is about 14min/120GB, 28min/240GB or 61min/512GB, if recording at that maximum data rate. While 5K/24fps/4:1 compression is 127MB/sec and will give you 16min/120GB, 32min/240GB or 69min/512GB, with 8:1 compression giving you just over double that recording time.

2. I believe you can use both EVF and touchscreen at the same time, but now that you mention it, I don't recall seeing actual proof of that.

3. Yes you can record ProRes only, but limited to 2K (2048 × 1080), with higher than 2K resolutions scaled down in-camera (not cropped down like R3D's are).

4. They're practically the same. Phil Holland did a good comparison showing the differences - http://www.reduser.net/forum/showth...t/page13&highlight=Weapon+ProRes+Phil+Holland

5. I don't know. It looks like the two A-Box inputs are mixed into one stereo signal. If so, you'll have to use a separate recorder for one of your two microphones if you want them both recorded separately. In which case, there might not be any point using the A-Box at all.

6. Nobody can say yet. Jarred has said the new side-handle that RED is making will be very good.

7. I don't recall seeing anything about Weapon/Scarlet-W/Raven/DSMC2 power consumption, but I don't think it will be very different to the current DSMC1 usage. Which means you'll probably be looking for a 90-150Wh/14V capacity battery to give you 1.5-2hrs run-time per battery.

Hi Les,

Thanks for all the detailed info. Really great of you to do that! I also got a reply from RED about these topics. I´ll post them here.

Take care
best

1) There’s not yet a full overview of the recording times, though you can use the tool on eu.red.com to help get an estimate. As the Scarlet-W and Epic incorporate the same Dragon sensor and will both use Mini Mags, you are able to calculate the recording times based on Scarlet-W settings through http://www.red.com/tools/recording-time. For example, from the specs, the Scarlet-W can record at 5k at up to 60fps. At 5k and 50fps, it has a max compression of 9:1 which will give you 35 mins on a 240gb SSD. At 25fps at 5k, you’d be at a maximum of roughly 5:1, which will give you 39 mins. Please feel free to use that tool as a rough guide.

2) Yes, you will have both the picture from the LCD and EVF at the same time, however, when using both it does not allow you to use the HDMI. You have the choice of LCD and HDMI, EVF and HDMI or LCD and EVF. These options can be accessed through Settings->Display->Monitor Control->Advanced.

3) You can choose through Settings->Setup->Recording->Codec whether to record in RAW Only (camera only records Redcode RAW), Quicktime only (Camera only records in Prores) or RAW + Quicktime (Camera records both the Redcode RAW and Prores files at the same time, to the same card, with the same filename, timecode, etc).

4) If exposed to allow all stops of dynamic range that the sensor can handle and also working in log, then yes, the prores should show the same DR as the RAW.

5) The 3.5mm jack on the base expander is a stereo jack. If you were to use the A-Box, then the 2 XLR inputs would be using 2 tracks of audio.

6) Unfortunately we do not have a release date or any further info on the Side Handle. We believe this will come from Element Technica first.

7) The camera should draw roughly 60-70W with those items, so should last (for example) for roughly 1.5 hours on a 97Wh battery such as a Redvolt XL, PAG v-lock, IDX, Swit, etc).

in regards to question 6 (controlling iris and shutter) does anyone know wether you can use the dial on the Red Sidekick?

No worries Conny, thanks for posting the reply from RED.

About the EVF and Monitor, im not too sure about those two combos however, its it stated in the user guide that if using HDMI, only one monitor can be used.

Hi Erick,

I got this answer to the question from RED (read all the answers above) So it is so that it work well with both EVF and LCD(4,7") at the same time;)

Good news!

"You have the choice of LCD and HDMI, EVF and HDMI or LCD and EVF"

Anyone know how the SDI output plays into this if wanting to output via that using the I/O expander?

IIRC, SDI is a different line. The HDMI output and side pogo "share" a display line so to speak, which is why you can only use one at a time. You can circumvent this by using SDI (which is a much better connector anyway).

Ok great Josiah thanks. So you could run a LCD, HDMI and SDI outputs for monitoring all at once?

Also found this that confirms SDI and to know about side pogo from Jasons Post here: http://www.reduser.net/forum/showth...W-footage-and-what-I-learned-about-the-camera

"One thing I learned about HDMI outputs: if you use the side pogo as your LCD, and you try to output HDMI, your LCD will go black. The side pogo and HDMI outputs through the same ports, so if you use HDMI for whatever reasons (extra monitor etc), you'd have to use your LCD through the top pogo output. No issues with SDI output with either ports."
