Hi, guys.... those of you who know me here know that for the past couple years I have lamented not owning a RED yet.
Well my day has FINALLY arrived!!! Next week I order my Scarlet-W.

I have my package all set up but I've decided to upgrade one of the items.

So my question is this. Would you advise I get the 512MB Mini Mag as opposed to the 240MB?
Or get the 7" Red Touch as opposed to the 4.7" Red Touch?

If it were you which would you spend the extra cash on?

I'm leaning toward the 7" Red Touch because my eyes just aren't what they used to be.
But would I benefit more from the higher data rate and larger capacity?

If you read page 55 of the latest Media Operation Guide you will see that 240GB mini-mag has a max data rate of 225MB/sec, which is 85MB/sec faster than the maximum 140MB/sec data rate of the SCARLET-W. Buying a mini-mag with a higher data rate than you can use is a waste of money.

unless he is thinking two years down the line and upgrades his camera and finds out his cards are useless.
i personally went with 512's and a 4.7
i used a weapon with a 7 inch on it the other week and it was so massive on the camera it was basically in the way for for a couple of rigs.
but it all depends on you, what do you need and how much you want to protect your investment.
for me, i normally have an AC with another monitor for focus and i have a directors monitor for color and exposure, so my on camera monitor winds up just being for composition and camera control.

There has been quite a few threads about the small screen and heat issues. For that reason i would go for the big screen.

I would go for both. I explain:
More media is always a necessity, so I would get at least an extra 240GB or more, depending on what you can afford.
Now, screen wise, stay with the 4.7" It's a great "stealth" screen for when you need to be as small and inconspicuous as possible, and it's a great touchscreen controller for the camera.
I would get a SmallHD 702 superbright. That way you are covered in situations you need a bigger screen real estate and also be able to see your picture outside at noon, in sunshine. SO use your 4.7 as a controller and the 702 for monitoring...

I'd go for the larger capacity Mags, so that if you upgrade or use a 2nd camera that utilizes faster data rates, you're still good. Plus, that shit will fill up quickly anyway. I use a single 512GB and a laptop to dump it in the field. I'd really recommend a 1TB if you could afford it.

On the other hand, a 2nd Mag will allow you to keep shooting while dumping, but that's more $ which sounds like your dilemma.

I've never used a RED 7", I still use the 5", but it would be nice to have a bigger screen when people are looking at playback over your shoulder. I've had a 3rd party 7" and I miss the size but the 5" is fine.

All great advice. Thanks guys. The more money situation won't be a problem down the line. I'm just trying not to go overboard with my budget right now to get my foot in the big RED door. By the time I upgrade to or get an Epic-W or Weapon I'll be in a better position to get the faster card(s). For what I shoot and where I typically am I think the larger screen is the way to go. I might pick up another 240 later.

Right now I use a 7" monitor on my current rig and I love the size so I think that's the direction I will go.

Thanks again guys... all good advice.

well that seemed like an easy decision.
it sounds like you should get both, since your cards might be useless when you upgrade.

Not sure what the rest of your kit entails, but if you have an alternate camera control planned (sidekick, side handle, foolcontrol) then you could just continue using the 7" you have. I'm pretty attached to my 5" (non-red) monitor and opt for physical controls over touch. Going to use the sidekick to control camera settings and monitor using my favorite 5". Keeping the 4.7" RED that's currently in my order and if I find I use it then great! but if not I'll probably sell it to pick up another piece of kit.

Are you going to be mounting to the camera, or on a noga arm?

If you are mounting to the camera, I would go with the 5".
If you are mounting to a noga arm, I would go with the 7".
