  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

So I'd like to ask if anyone knows the details about anamorphic shooting on Scarlet-W? Anamorphic options are mentioned in the Tech specs section of the Scarlet-W page, but nothing more.

Does shooting anamorphic affect framerates? Compression? Anything else?

Really like to get more info about this, maybe even official info from Jarred or other folks at RED.

+ 1 to this

I'm not official, but I can tell you how it works.

Traditionally you'd be shooting the 5K 6:5 mode with the 2X Anamophic lens for instance. Frame rates are determined by the pixel height of the format you are shooting. Since 5K FF and 6:5 are the same in height you have the same frame rates.

On Scarlet Dragon it seems you cannot unsqueeze resolutions lower than 5k. Has that changed for Weapon?

Ok, any word?

From the scarlet weapon manual and the purchase page there a 6:5 mode at 3240x2700 (2700 is full frame height) "5K Full Frame (5120 × 2700), 2:1, 2.4:1, 16:9, 6:5, 4:1, 8:1, and Ana 2x, 1.3x". So according to the manual and the purchase page the scarlet-w has both a 2x and 1.3x squeze option. The media operations guide normally gives 2 redcode drops from FF to 6:5 , so the technical page has a "5:1 REDCODE for 5K (5120 × 2700) at 24 fps", so I'd expect a 3:1 at 6:5 at 24 fps. There is an "edge" effect on the reduction of the redcode based on bit amount reduction, so it could be just 4:1 (which is awefully good).

Question to someone in the know as I don't know much about this. But can Reds shot anamorphic in the same way an Alexa can? I was under the impression that Alexa has a 4:3 ratio sensor while Red (non 8K VV) uses a 16:9 ratio sensor so, Red squeezes the image differently than Alexa. So Red shoots anamorphic more ideally with ana lenses geared towards 16:9?

i hope I'm wrong on this as I'd love to use anamorphic lenses on the Scarlet-W

The squeze is the same between alexa and red, it's just a lens on alexa has a bit wider field of view then on a red (i.e. to get the same field of view that is on a 35mm anamorphic lens on a alexa you would need a 30mm lens on a red). On the 4:3 alexa the height is 18.13 while on the red it's 15.8. Most of the older anamorphics are designed between a 17.5 to a 18.5 sensor height, so a 35mm anamorphic lens on a 4:3 alexa gets is a bit wider view then a dragon but otherwise everything is exactly the same as far as squeeze.

What I have done is google searched a lot with "David Mullen" and "anamorphic", lot of hugely interesting/useful stuff: http://www.deakinsonline.com/forum2/viewtopic.php?t=2633

and more specifically, is there a 2x 4K 5:4 option on the Scarlet-W Anamorphic menu?

Anyone?

Just to clear up this issue, I was recently advised by Red Support the latest firmware ANA formats in either 2x or 1.3x supported on the SCARLET-W are:
6:5 in 5K, 4K, 3K, and 2K;
5:4 in 4K, 3.5K, 3K, 2.5K, and 2K; and
4:3 in 4K, 3.5K, 3K, 2.5K, and 2K.
