  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet Vs. Cinema

Scarlet is no doubt, the most revolutionary camera for it's quality, price and performance. If this is to be delivered soon, I hope it's distributed on a large scale instead of having to wait in a line-up

Katty is wrong. The AF100 has a native 16:9 sensor (not a full 4/3 sensor) and it has larger pixels and lower resolution than Panasonic's other m4/3 still cameras. Nanoflash and other such recorders can give you a better codec to work from than the onboard AVC. But no matter how you slice it, you're still recording 8bit 4:2:2.

Anyway guys, we need to take this discussion elsewhere. ...Like DVXUSER.

And yes, Katty is gone due to the real name thing, he/she can come back with their real name. There's a few other name violations in this thread. Like jacpk just two posts up -- thanks, Chris for putting your name in your sig. But please stop by the real name thread in Recon if you have not done so already. Sorry to pick on you, you were right there. :)

I need a new camera very soon. There is no release date on Red Scarlet 2/3 (which is in my budget if it's 6 or 7k).

It's a terrible conundrum because the specs on the Scarlet are so very tempting, but it's unavailable at the moment with no set release date. So what's the best alternative to the Scarlet in that price range? I think it's the ag af-100.

Renting is not an option because of shooting schedule, which is sporadic. I can't shoot all day every day for a week straight, and daily rentals vs weekly are to expensive (almost double).

But that doesn't mean I still won't want to get a Scarlet when it releases. I'm thinking get the ag af100 now, and get the Scarlet when it releases, especially if that's going to be a year from now.

Then I can dump the af 100, or use it as a b cam.

Hey Eric,

I'm new here, but from what I've seen so far the general consensus seems to be that it will launch sometime around March/April of this year. I dont know what your specific requirements are, but I would definitely recommend trying to hold out for the Scarlet.

If you can wait until NAB in April to decide, we should at least have firm schedules and pricing by then if it isn't already released.

Yes, I can wait until April and NAB. Would love to purchase a Scarlet (even a fixed lens) instead of anything else if it's available at a reasonable date in the future.

I like this because it's not just a bunch of theory. It's practical advice for which lenses to buy, and what you can expect from them, and good comparisons between them.

However, it's specifically geared towards using lenses to shoot video with a DSLR, like a Canon 5d or 7d. A similar article for the Red would be just the thing, and it probably exists, but I don't know where it is.

Thanks Eric for the link. It was a good read. Definitely learned a thing or two.

It was very "model-specific" though. Just giving his opinion on specific lenses. Definitely useful, but I want to be armed with the knowledge to be able to look at a lens (and it's specs) and be able to say myself, "ah yes, this would be great for camera abc when the shot requires xyz"

Cheers,
Kian
