  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet Used Pricing

Once the BMC is mass produced the Scarlet prices will lower considerably. Shame RED never followed through with the 3k [interchangeable], a missed opportunity.

and at least you get a shootable camera for the entry price!
might be worth waiting a year until they have a slightly bigger sensor though, the prediction is that they will have 4k by 2014...and for around the same price it is now.

That's what I thought. It is not even close to a Scarlet.

Let alone a complete stop less of dynamic range, and I wouldn't even trust Canon's listing of it at 12.5 because the 12 they gave the c300 seems generous to me. I barely noticed a difference from the mkii when I shot with it (aside from its AMAZING low light performances which I'm not even sure this 1DC has as well)

With confidence and experience, I can say $5,300 is the magic number for brain only. You will sell it fast at this price point. Otherwise it might sit around and people will make dumb offers. 5300 + buyer pays all fees, shipping, etc. This is what you can realistically expect based on my experiences as a buyer and a seller.

Used? You heartless bastards! Why not just say that things didn't work out between you and leave it at that. Don't make her feel like a whore.

Sorry, drinking and typing...

During the influx of upgrades, 5500 to 6500. When the dust settles, easily 6k+, because if I were in the market, and am in CA where I'd have to pay tax, even 7K would be a steal. Depends on the buyer in the end, but for those saying 5000, that's just ridiculous because the guy wanted quick cash and made a rush sale. That doesn't force all the others in the market to drop in value as well.

Keep on dreaming... the prices are only going down as all manufacturers are coming with new low price 4K cameras at nab/next year. There is huge war coming between Canon, Sony, RED, Blackmagic and Panasonic starting at 2013. Prices will go down and specs will go up in such a fast rate that even the most low priced DSLR's will shoot RAW and 120fps in 2K 5 years from now. Most of these manufacturers already have 4K cameras around 10k$ and some even with ultra high frame rates. RED will have to drop Scarlet prices even more if they want to keep fighting in the sub 10k$ indie market which is where the big bucks are. BMC is leading this war as their camera is the first to produce true cinema quality image in RAW under 5k$. All other companies must adjust the prices and specs a lot more and they will, becuse they don't want to loose their customers. You can't have camera that costs 10k$ if there's camera at 3k$ that does the same, or more. The "under 10k$" indie market will be "under 5k$" in 2-3 years. Dragon Scarlet at 20k$~ (minimum for working unit) will be left to collect dust. RED must fight back and they will because they are here to make money. How many would have believed 6 months ago that EPIC will drop down to 19k$ this year? No one. Everyone believed that EPIC will retain its (almost full) value for years to come. Thinking that you will get 6k$ from used Scarlet brain 5 months from now is ridiculous. I hope that eveyone who is buying camera now understands how fast the value of camera drops these days and don't buy cameras they can't afford because in 2 years your camera is already old tech and others will have better cameras for half the price you paid.

Robert and Josh are you two for real?
I mean real as in not some fake names trolling in this site?
No disrespect (or maybe depending on your motives) but you two seem to really try hard to get on users nerves here with your negative and useless baseless comments.
But in the spirit of the coming holidays, I will give you some respect and let you guys keep this charade going till the new year.

After that it'll be a torrent wave of :P and >: for you two :)

I think it is important that people realize what is happening in this business right now and don't make purchases they regret after few months. There's little room for buyers remorse if you spend 15k$+ for a camera you don't need in a daily basis. If you don't need camera right now, I would suggest to wait over NAB and after that choose what you do. If BMC announces 4K S35 camera for 3k$ (like rumors say) which will start shipping in december, you know that RED and others must counter that before the end of the year. BMC was just an example, there will be many 4K camera announcements at NAB.

I hope that all of these predictions are accurate, because I will definitely buy another Scarlet to compliment mine! In reality, however, I do not think the prices will drop as severely or as rapidly as many people are suggesting. In fact, they just dropped, so I would guess that the current values will hold for a while.

I could be wrong though! Hope I am.

Eric with what am I trolling. Give me an example? Just chill man, I am definitely not trying to get on anyones nerves and have the right to express my opinion. Who are you? And what charade are you talking about, you seem more like the troll here with comments like that.

People do realize what's happening, but the BMC cameras are in a different league, I don't think they can come close to RED for the time being. Though I agree with the idea to wait it out unless you need a camera now for buyers (though this thread was started by a seller wondering pricing), for the time being, people don't need to give these cameras away with bad advice and rush sales based on the possibility of newer faster cameras coming out in the coming year.

Happy holidays to everyone.

Geoff Boyle was pretty impressed with the BMC, especially how hood the skin tones were, remember its just a camera!

What are the reasons that you think BMC isn't close to Scarlet if I may ask?

If the complaint about Red cameras is that they are always in Beta, you are in for a ride with the BMC. I'm sure they'll fix a lot of these things down the line with software updates, but there are a few things they can't fix

1) Form Factor - what where they thinking having a camera with a built in LCD that doesn't articulate? Built in/detachable hand grips or a side handle would have been a nice thought.

2) Internal Battery - Nice thought, but would have been better to have an additional swappable battery compartment where you can load in LP-E6s. When those run out, the camera switches to internal and you can swap out and shoot all day this way.

3) Workflow - In order to utilize raw, you'll have fun managing projects w/ DNG sequences. R3D is a mature container that's only getting better. I'd like to see an AdobeRAW SDK that they icensed to Arri, Canon, Sony, Panasonic, and BMD so that they could shoot in a compressed RAW format that played nice in the CS suite.

Nope. I'd doubt there will ever be a raw DSLR

You must be kidding. My guess is that RAW recording option (24p, max 30p) is included in most DSLR's made in 2014.

I agree on all. But the image is there.

By the way I happen to like the way RED and BMC gives us "beta" cameras, as long as they keep adding updates and fixes in fast rate.
