  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet trade in for Epic (non Dragon)

I was planing to get a Scarlet, but with the latest news I got confused! Not all of us can afford the upgrade to Epic D!
What is going to happen to the Scarlet? Is red going to discontinue the model?
Red shoud forget about the 6k for this smaller camera and come up with a 4K solution with better dynamic range.
What do you think?

@Carmel

I totally agree. I would much rather upgrade to the dynamic range and low light sensitivity, but still stay in 4k resolution. I bought into this camera with the idea that I will upgrade to a newer sensor in time. I wasn't looking to move into epic territory to get there.

So let's just ignore the usual suspects and let focus on constructive discussion and feedback...

Peter

I think the point people are trying to make is that there is no discussion. This is a subject that allows for no feedback or relevant discourse. We dont know what they are going to do and they have heard every opinion and know what everyone wants. So lets just go out, make the money we can, with the cameras we have and wait for what they say, when they say it. More knowledge less wishlists/complaint/rumor threads. I find it funny that with a company that is as transaprent as RED we still have so much activity on useless threads. just my opinion

Keep Shooting

I think discussions on these forums are a good tool for Red!

Red are not stupid and they shoud keep in mind what Red users and potential Red users want.
At this point they have a choice.
Either keep the Scarlet alive by making an upgrade for people who fall in the 10K to 20K budget.
Otherwise they just keep the Epic for producers with Budgets over 40K. (I am not saying this is wrong, depends on whom they want to target with their products)
If they dump the Scarlet, they will be making it easyer for other supplyiers like Blackmagic to come up with an affordabe 4K with better dynamic range and low light sensitivity! (they are already at 2.5K at 3K)

It is obviosly not up to us to tell them what to do, but I stll have my openion!

For me it is wise for Red to get people in the "Red Club" with a Scarlet. If these Red Users Grow they will Upgrade to Epic and keep all the extra modules from the Scarlet.
You get them in the club. You probably Keep them in!

5K 24/25 fps is not simply a feature Red is withholding. If it even is possible it is highly difficult to make hardware do it. 4.5K at some cropped aspect ratio is much more realistic.

Do you have some evidence of that? I'm not saying its false, but I think it is just as presumptuous to assume you know what features are possible as it is for others to assume they know what features are possible when you both have little to no evidence.

RED has shown us that Scarlet can read and debayer the sensor data at 5k 24fps since that is what it is doing when you shoot in 4k mode with lookaround turned on. On the other hand, the issue could be with the camera's limitations in REDCODE encoding speeds or something of that nature. Given the facts and apparent scalability of REDCODE encoding in camera, it doesn't seem impossible that 5k 24fps might be within the realm of possibility, but it would definitely still be bandwidth limited since Scarlet's 50MBps limit would mean 5k 24fps is stuck at about 14:1 compression and 5k 16:9 would still only work at 12:1.

The Scarlet that Red demonstrated was capable capable of recording 3K 2:1, Redcode 8:1, ISO 1000, F2.4, 1/250 shutter, 120fps. Video Posted 06-05-2011. We ordered one as soon as possible. The specifications (fps/cropping) were modified after we had purchased. The Red Scarlet is hands down the best Camera we have ever worked with in every respect, except frame rates. Frame rate is vital for shooting action sports. Renting an Epic is not an option.

The chatter about fps firmware upgrades has disppeared, and we have been hearing about Dragon for Scarlet in 2013. With the price drop in Epics and the uncertainty around trade-in and dragon upgrades, we (and I presume, many early scarlet owners) are weighing our options.

What is the general opinion to get the fps required. 1. Buy an Epic Brain now and sell the Scarlet or 2. Wait for the trade-in program.

You may as well go with 1. It is going to be cheaper then 2 without the Dragon, or extremely close to 2 if you were later upgraded the Epic you buy now to Dragon - otherwise all hell will break loose in the Epic land...
Not to mention that this Epic will be upgraded to Dragon before the Scarlets...

One thing to be mentioned in this discussion is the fact of the big price drop on the Epic.
That made the price gap between the two cameras that share the same peripherals a very attractive tought for many of us Scarlet owners.

Since RED has mentioned a possible upgrade to Epic-D from Scarlet, it raises the question of why not offer a early trade in program for those who are willing to upgrade to Epic-D. For example trade in your Scarlet X for a current Epic by pre-paying for the Dragon upgrade in the process. Get the Epic now, and the D upgrade when its available.

I personally find this a very attractive deal. I don't even expect the full value of the Scarlet in the trade in process like the Red One owners got on there trade, since they had Zen like patience.

I am sure that I am not the only person feeling trhis way.

Epic's are not on back order this days, RED could still kick off the traded Scarlets BT and make a lot of new users happy rather sooner than later.
It seems to me like a win win for everybody.

Except of corse Epic owners, they will be always pissed at us getting any deals, and stepping on there turf.
No pun intended. ; )
