  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet trade in for Epic (non Dragon)

Scarlet is the entry model camera from RED. When you opted for it did you honestly believe tat you can use it for a while and then plead to do a trade in? RED has never done any of this type of transactions. Those of you who have been around since the beginning know why
the upgrade paths to epic were givin to redone owners. It was a thank you for believing enough to invest when so many believed it was a scam, but certainly not charity. I dont believe RED is a trade in your camera anytime something new comes out type of business model.
that said there always a way to upgrade, its called sell your camera(scarlet) and pay the differece at the REDstore for the Epic of your choice. simple

Peter - I totally understand your logic and the reason why a scarlet - epic x upgrade would make sense for a lot of people. What I'm saying is that this suggestion has been made COUNTLESS times before already, and its getting old. This is coming from a scarlet owner. Trust me RED has heard the suggestion. They havent answered for a reason, they dont know enough about where the dragon sits, what the cost will be etc. Yes this forum is a place to give feedback but at some point its beating a dead horse. How many threads about more FPS on the scarlet have been made and what have we heard from RED about the subject? It would be very foolish for RED to come out and say "sure that sounds like a good idea we'll do that" and later have to retract their words, because there is a lot that needs to happen for such a program to exist along side the dragon upgrade, so lets just wait and let them figure out whats best for their business moving forward. All this speculation gets really old because more than a place for customer feedback and suggestion this place is supposed to be a hub for knowledge and experience to be shared, it'd be nice to get back to that as opposed to running in circles about things we know little about and have minimal control over.
 
Its funny... We don't even know what the trade in deal is going to be yet and people are already freaking out. Just use the camera you have and lets wait it out. RED could offer an insane deal for Scarlet trade in. Who knows.

I'm not worried about it. Sure I would love an Epic but my scarlet does the job just fine right now.

Patrick - do you mind pointing out who is "freaking out"? (besides of the usual suspects and some Epic owners...)

With an update to Scarlet HW there was a wiggle room for RED to decide the pricing. But with a full-fledged upgrade to Epic-D you can forget about any "great deals". Most Epic guys went crazy with the recent price drop. The upgrade to Epic has already been confirmed at being "more" then the originally anticipated $6K by Jim. It is more then safe to estimate the cost of the Dragon update to be simmilar or higher then the cost of the bare Scarlet brain (which is what would be traded in). So to upgrade Sacarlet to Dragon Epic - you are safely looking at the cost of the current Epic. Anything less and the usual suspects from Epic camp will burn this forum down...

And while it may seem like beating dead horse to some - this polite request is very much right at place with the most recent developments - especially the one where RED did offer a trade-in program for Scarlet to Epic-D. Now - more then ever - it make sense to ask about such a option...

So let's just ignore the usual suspects and let focus on constructive discussion and feedback...

Notice how no one from RED chimes into these trade-in debates?

They have a plan. They will tell you what it is when they are ready. Not worth worrying about until then... unless of course you have the loot to buy an Epic outright.

I'm pretty sure I'm gonna do just that.
 
Donnie there is no false information being spread here. This thread began with a simple question. Yes some people do get carried away and turn those questions into expectations, and that's not anyone's intention. If people fall into that shame on them. I don't think RED is going to chime in on here anytime soon, and it is very possible that this simply will not happen, but RED does listen whether they agree or not.

Then why not shut this board down? After all the vast majority of discussion here was/is about constructive feedback from RED users and feature requests that "nobody knows nothing about"...

Just because they do not reply - it does not mean they do not listen. Quite the contrary. They have said so themselves on number of occasions...

And nobody is "freaking out" or "worried". Not in the Scarlet camp anyway...

So unless you have something constructive to add - stop attacking these threads and making asumptions on behalf of RED yourselves and then force it upon us. This forum is huge - go find another threads you can contribute to - or make your own...

Amd Donnie - just for the record - you are doing just that in here - spreading false information that this thread is according to you a debate about information nobody knows about...

We do know that Scarlet is no longer upgradable to Dragon sensor.
We do know that RED is going to offer a trade-in program for Scarlet to Epic-D.
We do know that this is not going to happen any time soon. They only have a Frankie Dragon and Jim clearly stated that Epics will be upgraded to Dragon before Scrlets. 2014 sounds indeed like an optimistic assumption.

But all this is irrelevant and can change 360 degree tomorrow. EVERYTHING IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE and we do count on it.
But don't try to stop us providing RED with customer feedback and stop answering on their behalf...

Before you all try to find out where I live and burn down my house and kidnap my family, I would like to suggest that before we go on a tangent tirade of verbal lashings we think twice about criticizing each other here. This is meant for all REDUSERS and should be a peaceful community that supports one another. Lets try to be a bit more supportive, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, none of use should judge here. I hope that we can all get passed those that have honest questions and leave it be. If you are NOT a RED rep, you are not the one expected to answer. Show respect, get respect. We are all part of the RED family, respects to you all. Thank you
 
As I said in another thread somewhere... If you want to see freaking out and posting false claims; wander over to the BlackMagic Forum. These are very languid discussions in comparison.

And in agree-ance with others above, and probably one of the people being talked about on here... A request to "up the frame rate" on Scarlet isn't too far fetched. And all i'm talking about is usable 24/25fps 5K here... Not a HFR "epic-specced" camera.. YES, at present it cannot happen or feel the wrath of the Epic owners.. But when their appetite is sated and they are "Dragon-ed up" then Scarlet would fit nicely into a Niche market. Scarlet= 3k/4K higher frame rates and 5K standard rates. Epic-X= High framerate 5K (a massive jump up if 4K is the standard) and then Dragon for Hollywood-style stuff taking over the reins where Epic was...

Speculation admittedly but hardly conjecture....

Having watched the Justified Premier many of those suggestions could come true..... Now if only there was a camera to film it.......
 
I'm really hoping the great intellectual people on this forum will treat one another with respect. All questions should be answered respectfully and professionaly. We must not forget that there are outsiders that can read our posts and the infighting only makes us all look unprofessional and I'm sure RED execs would rather us not bring negativity to this public forum.

5K 24/25 fps is not simply a feature Red is withholding. If it even is possible it is highly difficult to make hardware do it. 4.5K at some cropped aspect ratio is much more realistic.

You misunderstand me Jesper. I'm not insinuating that it's being withheld.. What i'm saying is with the Dragon programme in full swing within, say, 12 months there is a good chance that "some" advancement in the tech "might" filter down to both Standard Epic-X and Scarlet-X. Through the innovation comes reward..

So you see i'm not asking for a "free" Epic tomorrow, I'm asking that Scarlet constantly be pushed to the limit of it's capabilities. And as a Dragon cannot be inserted, perhaps some mid-way hybrid "might" fit in it, again, someday..

You see I'm coming to Scarlet from the opposite end of the buying spectrum to a lot of people here. And i'm sure I represent a few others too! I'm not buying Scarlet as a hop-skip--and-jump to Epic/Dragon... All I want is a "promise" (rhetorical) from RED that my investment of £22k (after UK taxes... thanks gov.uk!) will not be wasted. And I am totally convinced that only RED could offer this promise...

And on further consideration I wonder if your statement might not be right? I understand that the ASIC boards are different in Scarlet and Epic but many of the components are just Epic rejects.. So "could" the Scarlet be pushed? And is it possible (oh God, here I go - into the deep...) that RED might withhold some capabilities from Scarlet to keep the divide between it and Epic so wide? Now Epic has somewhere to go (up) perhaps Scarlet has some room to 'breathe'? Now that is speculation? But not completely in the realms of fantasy..

Having said all of that... 4.5k at a reasonable movie rate would be bloody amazing.. keeping the BlackMagic wolf from my door a few months more!!
