Im stuck. Who is pulling the trigger on what here?

Scarlet Tactical Cage vs. VF FMJ

My thoughts are STC if you want RED QR/Dovetail

VF FMJ if you are looking to save some cash and want to get into a 15mm LW HH FF MB setup and dont need the QR/DT.

Loving the abbreviations. :)

Jack

FMJ plates have ribs and are designed with Epic in mind, these ribs will stick out when used with Scarlet.

Initially I was about to get an FMJ kit, but now I'm leaning more towards RED's own solution. Well, maybe Brook will come out with a Scarlet version of FMJ pretty soon and I will change my ming again

Do you mean the ribs at the top of the Epic? Doesnt the VF top plate replace that part of the camera?

Yes it does but even after that there are still ribs on both sides of Epic, they are a part of the design that is absent on Scarlet.

so how does that affect the VF FMJ on Scarlet?

The price of the top plate from RED vs Wooden Camera top plate is $1 difference. VF was more last time I checked. Go with RED for sure, it is made by the camera manufacturer and will no doubt be compatible with future products. VF may not be. We are hoping to produce some Scarlet X accessories but outside of the cage system setup. It seems RED has thought of everything and has a functional and very affordable system.

Also, the other systems flow with the body of the EPIC top style, but REDs is strait and not cut out specifically to the body, which offers more mounting points and possibly if future EPIC body styles come out will work better with their own RED top plate.

So as it stands the Scarlet Base Production Pack and Tactical Ribcage are backordered - I am thinking of switching gears and going to the VF - FMJ. Has anyone put the FMJ on their Scarlet?

My understanding is that the FMJ also requires the use of a bottom plate, whereas REDs ribs actually are slightly shorter, attaching to the threads on the side of the camera... correct? You need the tactical adapters, but otherwise no bottom plate is needed to use the RED ribs. That's my understanding anyway, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

what i want to know is if i can mix and match.

use a VF Top Plate with Red Rib Cage?

You and me both.

A great solution would be the VF/BW FMJ Top plate and Red Ribs.

That leaves the bottom free for the Red QR system ... or Brook's bottom plate with LW 15 adapter ... or anything else.

Do we know if any of the top plates (VF/BW or Wooden Camera) actually fit with the Scarlet properly? So far all I see is plates listed for EPIC.

Brook's FMJ on Scarlet

It does fit, but ribs on the right side of the plate will still stick out since the right side of Scarlet is "ribless"

Are you sure about that? From the photos they both look like standard swat rails.

I actually saw this in another post too Julio, that the RED ribs are not NATO rails.

Demetri, which version of the cage do you have? Epic X or Epic M?
(I'm looking at a two-rib cage, don't need right side ribs) http://www.viewfactor.net/index.php/products/epic-acc/fmj-kit-2.html

It's also important to think about the speed of the delivery of your system. RED is constantly in backorder and VF and WoodenCamera both seem to be much better at handling the speedy delivery, because they aren't worried about putting out cameras.

Trevor, that's actually a photo taken by Brook himself, he posted it in the FMJ upgrade thread, my Scarlet is still ahead. I asked Brook which top plate should I get for Scarlet and the answer was Top-X for Epic-X. I fully agree with you on the left side ribs only config, cause I plan to keep my Sidehandle on camera at all times (I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who's already got it). I decided to wait a bit and see if Brook will come out with a dedicated Scarlet FMJ top since my camera isn't here yet and I guess it won't be till early 2012 (Ti Canon mount here).

2 everyone: the choice between RED cage and the FMJ boils down to one simple question — do you plan to use the QR system with dovetails and all that. If you do — invest in RED, if you don't bother, you can get the FMJ cage and work with it, both are fantastic products. If you decide to combine the two though (for instance combine fully "FMJ'ed" Scarlet/Epic with the Clutch) you will face some height issues, RED didn't make the bottom of their ribs connect directly to the camera for no reason.

Interesting - can you elaborate a bit more on the height issues with the Clutch and the FMJ'd Scarlet/Epic?
