Well, is there anyone here having used his/her Scarlet-X for video AND stills ?

As mentionned in another section of the forum, in most situations it seems there's no way to get the right result for both video and stills (either stills will suffer from motion blur, or the video will be full of stobe effects). This said, I have a job coming and i'm wondering if i should cover the scarlet with a dslr..

Has anyone checked the stills with those modes ?
- 4K / 30fps / 120 shutter speed : OK for stills but video stobe.
- 4K / 24fps / shutter ???
- 5K / 12fps..... ???
- 5K / 6fps / HDRx ???

I have used it for stills and motion at the same time (Handheld 4K 25p @1/50th). There is no way of getting both right at the same time. So the only option you have is to tell your subjects to stay still.
But i have to say that i was pretty dissapointed in overall sharpness of the stills, nothing to write home about.

So if your project involves high-quality stills. you better take your DSLR with you: Faster&Better AF, Higher Resolution, no Motion Blur.

Hi Yannick,

Fellow RED user Brad Allen and I shot and posted some 5K 12 FPS stills.

These were a pan that was stitched. Sharpness is pretty good we thought considering these are Raw, with no post sharpening.

The shutter issue for now is the wall between just pulling stills from motion. But really for me, it only takes a few seconds to switch to 5K and ramp the shutter speed up. It's not total freedom. But it's pretty damn flexible. Note: The shots we took had no black shading between changing frame rates and resolution.

Best

Hey, thank you guys.
One question by the way... Can we switch framerate and shutter speed on a single redmag ? And have some 4k and 5k footage together without having to reformat ?

This is simply not true. These are the stills from old Red One (not MX) shot at 1/250th from years ago and of very fast moving objects. Last one from the Epic (not graded). (keep in mind these are 1024x jpegs, original files are very sharp)

Milan, we're talking about Scarlet limitations here...

What were the fps on your redone ? 24 or faster ?

If my memory is correct, the original 5D shoots 7 FPS bursts. Scarlet shoots 15 FPS in 5k.

How fast is the MK III, 6FPS?

It seems like the obvious issue is not frame rate, but shutter speed. You can't just shoot 180 degree video and expect crispy stills. Shoot at 1/250th and higher and you're not dealing with motion blur. You won't get a normal looking video either.... so the DSMC system in that sense is not as easy as just rolling your video and pulling stills... you have to role your stills... and pull them. But you get all the choices!

I wonder if red will implement a system where you can switch on the side handle stills or motion and it will automatically switch shutter speeds. So you could save your 1/48 for motion and 1/500 for stills
