Hey guys, I am putting together a scarlet starter kit and need some feedback.

So far:

Scarlet-X Canon AL
DSMC Side Handle
DSMC Power Pack
Red Station Red Mag
Red Mag 1.8 SSD (4-pack)

I have a DP4 so I will use that for monitoring. I can still control the entire camera without problems with the side handle correct? No need for the RED LCD?

My buddy has the TV Logic 5.6 VFM-056WP, can I monitor with the TV Logic and the DP4 at the same time? If not, what do I need to do that?

I am also getting some Switronix XP-L95RED for juice.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Sounds good :)

Get the touch LCD trust me its worth it, touch screen is way faster. I know the price is kinda high but its really faster on set instead of doing the side handle/monitor thing

I'd recommend the LCD as well. It might be pricey but it does cut down on time navigating the menu. You could always rent one and try it out on a couple of shoots to see if you like the workflow. Another key for me is zooming in on certain areas by just touching the part of the screen for critical focus. It also mounts to the body pretty easily, vs an external LCD where you'd have to have a noga arm and a cheese plate where the noga arm would have to screw into, another few hundred $$ down the drain. Awkward for handheld shooting unless you have a shoulder rig.

I´d recommend the LCD too. Do you really need 4 SSD to start? Because you could also go with 2 and get the 5" LCD instead.

Have to disagree with the lot of you. I hate navigating with the LCD. It's a nice monitor to have, as it fits nice, and sits tight and looks good. But I always use the Sidehandle for navigation even with LCD attached.

I've put some shortcuts into the buttons on the Sidehandle, so that I get much faster to the Audio Sub-menus.

If you can rent one (LCD 5" Touch) you will find that its all you are ever going to need for managing your shots.

However I have the SH and love it as well.

Most of the time my cameras been out, renters remove the SH.

I wish I had more experience with a BOMB.

The few times Ive used, I keep wanting to go back to my LCD fast.

I could go for just two 64GB and get the LCD. Can I use the RED LCD with my DP4 at the same time? Or would I need an additional modular piece to do that?

Thanks for all the replies so far!

Yes the DP4 is HDMI.

I would add a top handle and/or outrigger handle, nothing makes me feel safer than a solid handle to move from tripod to handheld or when loading out. Also, If you go with the RED 5" touch make sure you get a long cable. I have the standard 6" meaning no off body mounting which can be frustrating.

+1 for the handles. Maybe the new dual outrigger handle and probably a top-handle too, but check first how you want to mount them, you'll eventually need a top-plate too.
and also +1 for the RED LCD. It's worth it. Period. I wouldn't want to use a RED without a RED LCD.

What comes in mind too... 2 REDVOLTs from the DSMC powerpack aren't much, better get 4.

You also didn't say anything about the battery plate, but you'll need one, if you want to use V-mounts. Have a look at the RED QUICKPLATE module, it doesn't need a cable like the 3rd-party solutions, but it needs the module adapter. As alternative, i really like the REDVOLT XL module, maybe have a look into it. It's great to have everything from RED and just one charger (the QUAD CHARGER) for REDVOLTs and REDVOLT XLs. Yes, it does cost a bit more.

Check the used market, you can get some things way cheaper, like the module adapter, or REDs QUAD Battery module, if thats interesting for you. Lots of RED bigMAGs are on sale these days too, many people are switching to the miniMAGs.

Thats my last point, think about skipping the bigMAGs. If i would start today, i would go for RED's miniMAGs, even if i only can afford just one of those 512GB mags. Do the math and also think about being a bit more future-proof...

Last advice, you can start cheap, but saving at the wrong end can make your experience frustrating.

Regarding the outrigger handle and v-mount plate, was thinking of going for the wooden camera RED equivalents (Plates, handles, v- mount plates etc) Their stuff looks solid and right now it's all about saving $$$, I'll have a look at the RED used market and see what I can get, great tip, thanks!

But one thing is for sure, the RED mini-mags are definitely out of my budget right now.

Harry, FWIW I dumped the whole Battery-for-the-side handle power source after the first few months.
Meaning: sold off Handle's batteries and charger, kept handle. Your Brick is all the power you need, for all the good the side handle batteries contribute, which is minimal, esp considering cost. Save yer $$, buy another brick and a pants- belt-mounted case for it to keep on you for a spare and go...

But with the touch LCD I can attach a 3m cable and control the cam on a jib, attached outside a vehicle, from a hide... and so on. I love both, side handle and touch LCD.

Sorry, but i disagree with that advice. ;) The REDVOLTs in the sidehandle are the best option if you need to keep the weight down. I would not drop it, i really like to run around with just the minimal-setup, it's already heavy enough.

The runtime is short, compared to XLs or bricks, but its usable. 30-40min per REDVOLT, without having power saving options on are good if you think about how little the REDVOLTs are and how power hungry a Scarlet is.

From my experience they are all good options.

Just depends on your budget.

I have saved a ton of money buying from REDUSERs :)

But one thing is for sure, the RED mini-mags are definitely out of my budget right now.
Your configuration costs you:

1500USD - SideSSD
1840USD - 4pack 48GB REDMAG

3340USD Total

vs

1600USD - SideSSD Mini
2450USD - 1 512 REDMAG Mini

4050USD Total

Both readers cost the same (195USD), so i did not include them. You would get more than 2 times the space (the 48's are in reality close to 56GB i think) and faster, newer and more future-proof tech.

If you calculate with 64GB or 128GB REDMAGs the bigMAGs really don't make any sense for starters anymore.

Good thing is, you can get bigMAGs and SideSSD-modules cheap on the used market, but think twice if you plan to get more mags in the future. My 64 gets filled up quickly, i would not buy anything under 128 anymore.

Thanks for the input Maik, that's not a big price difference, saw the price for one minimag and panicked :D think I might go with the mini then.
