  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet shipping early 2011 - confirmed!!!!

You're one optimistic guy, Sanjin.

Regardless, if RED puts out Scarlet S35 in the first half of 2011, I'll be satisfied.

i don't think that the most expensive RED camera ever EPIC will be right decision to lunch the first especially at this hard time of a weak global economy.

That means if RED have something cheeper under their sleeves (and they obviously have, it's just called Scarlet) is a right moment to react

fast and effective to keep higher share of the market (professional, semi-pro users and enthusiasts).

Strategy is very simple and is about don't let Sony now to take over the market segments that RED wanted to have from the beginning (Scarlet).

Also don't forget that $17,500 price tag was one of the main reason that almost 8,000 people jumped in RED1 wagon.

EPIC base brain body is $28,000 and let's say about 50% or 4,000 users have stages 2 & 3.

In a meantime Sony have sold 10,000 PWK-F3 camcorders.

I'm not sure that RED would like to see any future like this.

Scarlet S35 is RED Joker card.

Joe,

by unwritten business rule you'll always get the fast investment overturn only selling a cheaper and affordable product.

But if you are ready to loose the money that's totally another story

but anyway just send me that set of Leica lenses ASAP (just kidding) .

Hi Sanjin,

Unwritten business rules have recently been rewritten (or is that recently unwritten).
Please PM me for my delivery address on that set of Leicas. (haha)

Regards,

Joe

RED Team has quiet period in the last days

and it looks like a silence before the storm.

Which kind of storm you would preffer?

Cyclone or tornado?

Cyclone storm should be compared with Scarlet effect that has a wider spread, stronger mass production volume that will flood competition and take over the market.

Tornado storm should be compared with Epic effect that has whirling at destructively high speeds and probably will destroy almost all competitors on the market.

why shouldnt a red one owner do stage 2,3 or just ugrade to MX?
its 20k,10k or 5k usd.
the r1 should have earned this amount until now.
and a s35 scarlet with all the modules, storage and power will be around
20k.
this sony cam is weird, feels like a ex1 with pro 35 mm adapter included.
so no real competition for reds redcode based raw cam.
dunno how many canon 7d users will jump on that sony wagon wagon though?
2/3 fixed scarlet is sexy, but for dof fetish users its not that attracting i guess.
i would prefer a assecoiry/storage/power/rpz bundle for epic instead of a release of s35 scarlet.

Well, I think the new sony cam offers sony's 10bit S-Log recording via external recorder..

Well, I think the new sony cam offers sony's 10bit S-Log recording via external recorder..

i see!
but the additinoal costs too,
and for me, having a freezer by your cam sucks.
so with alexa, thats the reason why they work on a onboard arriraw recording solution. but software is not their strongest area. they have no graeme:)

Well, I think the new sony cam offers sony's 10bit S-Log recording via external recorder..

Right and big LA rentals like an Otto Nemenz backing the newest Codex

422/4444 uncompressed recorder or visually lossless wavelet compression, with compression ratios from 3:1 to 8:1

and also Otto was one of the main investors for lightweight Leica C primes and that's the way how Sony's new camera will go.

Also don't forget that:

"Immediate recording start and no overwriting footage

By virtue of recording on flash memory card, the
PMW-F3L can start recording virtually the instant the
camcorder is turned on. Moreover, the PMW-F3L automatically
records on an empty area of the card -
there’s no danger of overwriting existing content.
This is extremely convenient, as camera operators do
not have to worry about accidentally recording over
good takes, and they don’t have to search through
footage for the correct position to start the next recording.
In short, it means the camera is always
ready for the next shot!"

There's also the fact that the Scarlet has been promised for 2/3 years still not here!!! not even any real footage(lets not go on about the epic with scarlet shortly behind) to look at, when do people feel that its all hot air and its a vapour camera! the sony F3 was first known about in May 2010, out in Jan/Feb 2011 9 months, thats not bad. RED must realise that at some point in time people wont believe it will ever happen because its been promised for so long, the quote "subject to change" is a great get out and can be over played.

Don't get me wrong l here for scarlet, money in the bank ready for one, l feel it will floor the others, but at some point, there's a point in time when one has to be practical and the other options start to look attractive, if there out there and for sale and not a camera still waiting to happen.

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. l feel if scarlet is not out for sale by April next year and in quantities for worldwide sales, then RED will have lost a major number of sales. They have no real worldwide infra structure of Pani or Sony so if your none USA thats an additional consideration.

I want to be proved wrong.

The sony is just an updated ex1/3 with a larger sensor, not much more... and a quiet badly behaving codec ( I can know because I own some.)

As I mentioned in my last post above for high end stuff and 3D productions Sony is counting to offer onboard 3G dual HD-SDI recording like with a Codex one...

Pretty much as an Alexa but with a fraction of the camera price and weight.

That was exactly to trick the competition and see their reaction.

Now we know what they pulled out of the hat.

That would be kind of a nasty trick to pull on your customers too, wouldn't it?

Besides, wasn't the F3 known at least to some extent a while ago, before this official announcement?

By those rumors I thought that Sony will go 4K but still not just because they do not have imager/sensor for that...

Also we just crossed over 10,000 views of this tread in a couple of days.

The customers interest for Scarlet S35 is a really huge!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This Scarlet 3D rig above by Element Technica 3D shows us probably that Scarlet launch date is coming pretty close.

This picture looks like it’s from IBC so it doesn’t really show Scarlet being any closer than it was back then. (Unless I’m wrong in which case someone correct me) Sweet rig though.

Or at least that's my take.

The only difference is that we knew about Scarlet existed through it's whole development process. Sony definitely has (and has had) many R&D teams working on cameras that are delayed, changed and had problems like Scarlet has. Many are probably cancelled too. The only difference between them and RED is that they pretend the cameras don't exist until they have most of the bugs sorted and the production lines ready...

I like RED's way better. Certainly one has to be realistic (we're shooting HDV cameras, EX1/3s, DSLRs etc. while we wait) but it's awesome to know what's coming in the future directly from the source instead of just hearing little rumours on the internet like you do for the other brands...
