  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Most Influential/Favorite Cineamtographers

I forgot to mention Aleksandr Knyazhinsky and that Great moody Photography from Tarkovsky`s Stalker.

I hate to be Mr. Obvious, but this list is certainly not complete without a gentleman named Vilmos Zsigmond. He did some pretty good stuff.

Eduard Tisse, Battleship Potemkin

Leni Riefenstahl, Olympia 1 & 2

Luis Bunuel, Un chien andalou

Jack Hildyard, The Bridge on the River Kwai

Boris Kaufman, On the Waterfront

Robby Muller, Pretty much everything he has shot

Sven Nykvist for sure.

All of his movies with Bergman and even The Sacrifice with Tarkovsky - he's truly one of the greats of all time.

Cheers

It's hard to choose and I feel humbled by all the excellent work that I see...
but these are a few recent examples of absolute standouts for me:

Children of Men : Lubezki
Dirty Pretty Things : Menges
No Country for Old Men : Deakens
The Prestige : Pfister
Happy Together : Doyle

I've met most of these guys ( not yet: Chris Menges ) and they are super nice too.

I love most of the above mentioned lensmen let me add:

Dion Beebe: Memiors of a Geshia
Ron Fricke: Baraka
Barry Sonnenfeld: Millers Crossing
Janusz Kaminski: Shindlers List
Néstor Almendros: Day's of Heaven

I've had the pleasure of shooting 2nd unit for Dion and he is an amazing artist and very down to earth guy. I've also worked with Barry Sonnenfeld who is one of the funniest guys you'll ever meet.

Barry Sonnenfeld: Millers Crossing

Mr Sonnenfeld is no doubt an extremely bright and talented man. I must however watch Millers Crossing again as I seem to remember it being a little photographically clunky. It definitely is a conscious departure from his other Coen's work. It has a more handsome style?

I will watch it again but if my memory serves correctly Mr S intimidates with his big picture thinking and other successes rather than his photography.

To add to this list of successes I now must add 'funny' as well!:waaa:

Just my pennies worth..
