  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet S35 is now...

I think the rebranding makes total sense.

EPIC = RED’s line of 5k S35 sized cameras

Scarlet = RED’s line of 3k 2/3” sized cameras

Woh there. What’s leading you down that line of thought? EPIC-S should be 5k until/unless they ever say otherwise. It is the same chip as EPIC with less horsepower for frame rates and data, they’ve always said that. They continue to say that. While RED’s new website doesn’t reflect the name change yet I will quote it:

“…Scarlet S35, which is basically a scaled down version of EPIC, offering the same APS sized S35 5K sensor that is in the higher end camera. While EPIC boasts faster data streams and faster frame rates, Scarlet S35 will have the resolution, dynamic range, look and feel of EPIC…”

Nothing that has recently been said suggests any of that has changed. Just because Jim says the features have changed doesn’t mean it looses resolution, RED has continually proven the opposite by only ADDING features, not taking them away.

You could be 100% right, but I always thought Scarlets were 3K - I could be wrong, and I don't claim to know. Maybe the 5K sensor is downsampled in the S-version to 3K?

What none of us know, also, is the price the Epic-S will be.

If it is only 25K vs. 35K or so for an Epic, then Red 1 could exist at 18K. RedMx will still be good enough to shoot a major Holywood feature, as it is now.

I have no idea about future prices, and there is also the question of availability, for an amount of time that has not yet been exactly specified for the S-version.

The Red One & MX will have to fit in their pricing structure somewhere because Red will be receiving thousands of trade ins. Certainly a lower price than Epic but higher than the 2/3" Scarlet.

I seem to recall it was only the 2/3 that was limited to 3k.

$5 says they announce a new, lower-featured Scarlet S35 at the Epic-S's former price point, though.

Break out the cards boys, there is a whale in the room who appears to have left his good sense back at the hotel.

Jim has been very quiet about any possibility of reselling the used R1's at any discounted rate. It may have been more of a timing issue than reluctance to discount refurbs, but his dedication to the preservation of R1's value leads me to the possibility that he may destroy them rather than de-value them.

Everything going forward will have HDRx™. That is one of the things that has caused some last minute scrambling and price increase. Jim

It seems they would fade out Red One as it doesn't have HDRx ..but
who knows..maybe they will add HDRx to the traded in Red One's if
possible and sell them.

Check the battle tested section of the Red Store. They do sell refurbished equipment.

The old FAQ sticky in the Scarlet section said the S35 would shoot 5k. They’ve never said anything to suggest otherwise, so while we might not know the final specs yet, speculating at this point that it will do any less than what they’ve said seems kind of pessimistic to me.

Well, that’s certainly true. No one knows the final pricing structure. We do know that a shiny new RED one now costs $25, not $18. We also know the targets they set (and changed as needed) for the other cameras in addition to what people who have executed their serials for the first two stages paid. So I don’t think we’re looking at massive price restructuring. But it is true that only time will tell.

Yes, I agree that availability will be an issue for some period of overlap at the beginning, as is always the case with these things.

That's cool and all but until I hear an announcement or see an R1 in there it is up for speculation. Again, it may just be a matter of timing.

Another thing that gets us into trouble is talking as we think here on reduser. It doesn't matter how many times we say "things are subject to change, count on it"... people remember the numbers and think they were "promised". The sour posts continually remind me to re-think our communication philosophy.

Jim

Just don't say anything about prices and you'll do fine :Angel_anim:

Jim,
You should know when you do things against the grain you get friction. Keep it mind that's also one of the things that sets you apart. You are a CEO who is candid with its user/soon to be base unlike Sony, or Panasonic. Ignore the whiners, bask in the 99% of us who are grateful for you pioneering company #2 ;)

Ill take that bet - why the heck would they clarify the lines and then suddenly go back and make an S35 scarlett? iunless you are implying that nobody will buy the Epic - S due to the change. Ill double the bet if thats your point.

As I said in a very recent post... we will discuss the road map when we are 6 months from release. We have telegraphed what we are doing to competitors and won't do that anymore.

Jim

A smart decision and move.

Competition never sleeps.

Lessons learned from "WikiLeaks" affair...that means no transparency is recommended any more in this or any sort of other serious business...

Also the global economy boat start to sink again (US, EU and East Asia markets) and 2011 will be very hard year especially for some of the competitors.

Having said that RED should try out ASAP to start shipping Epic-S and Scarlet 8x Fixed before the production costs could rise even more of its total price next year.

Understood. You have to do what you have to do. I was just noting the similarity between what happened with us 2/3-fixed hopefuls and now the complaints of the S35 hopefuls (more than a few of which told us to suck it up). No worries, as you said there are plenty of choices out there, and more coming every day.

Kaboom. :cheers2:

Hi Jim, So just to clarify, are you saying that all the features of "Scarlet 2/3" 8X Fixed and EPIC-S, EPIC-X and EPIC-M" have now been locked down. You will not be adding any more additional features to them.

Would I be right in thinking that the main drive now is to ensure that everything is working smoothly, and to also get the production lines going efficiently? Thanks!

Add 2/3" Interchangeable to that list and you are correct. Features are locked down and we are preparing for production...

Jim
Yeah !

Jim, I'll take this quote and frame it.

I have been waiting for this moment for such a long time.

Thank you so much. :-)

Maybe I should forget about the EPIC-S and F3 and just wait for a R1MX...

It is good! But I see we will not be able to buy Epic S (S35) before 2012! We need again a whole year!((

Silly post... why do you say that? Some people actually might believe you if you write stuff like this.

Jim

A quick scan of the the thread doesn't really reveal (unless I missed it) what the EXACT differences are between the Scarlet S35 and the Epic-S apart from HDRx. That will surely be the real test that Epic-S is much more. Eager to see.
