  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet S35 is now...

This is... without doubt the most bipolar board I have seen in sometime. I can understand Mr. Jannard's want to release information early, but with the constant schoolhouse whining, I would say you are all simply confirming his previous thought to stay quiet. It all seems mighty presumptous to scream about price when they haven't announced it yet. That said, if you can't afford the S35, go with the 2/3rds. That's likely what I will be doing.

Steven, welcome to the fray!!! Fun, ain't it?

Agreed...but people are just worried as some waited long time.
2/3 is an excellent option. S35 is not magic.
The price will be what it has to be for the business to exist.

Well I have a different perspective on the price issue. If the Epic-S gets above a certain threshold in price it becomes a non-product.

People were 'concerned' about the price difference before but that was the huge differentiating feature. If Epic-S was 18k and Epic was 23k then you might as well go "all the way". What made Epic-S so appealing was that it was perfect for 90% of production. I think most of the time I'll be shooting 24p. Occasionally I'll need high-speed. Something in-between doesn't really offer me that much extra value since if you want 96p you also probably want 120p.

I see Epic-S as the purchase option but Epic-X as the rental. There's a fine line in there after which a lot of people will rent instead of purchasing to just keep on hand and if they're going to rent, the incremental rental cost from Epic-S to Epic-X would be negligible. I doubt most rental houses will carry Epic-S since most of the price wouldn't be in the camera price but in overhead and maintenance anyway.

But I'm not terribly concerned, the HDRx price increase on Scarlet wasn't that much even though there was a lot of panic at the time. I expect a similar % price increase.

Oh I am totally with them, I would love to have a 35 sensor, and have been drooling over this thing since three minutes after they announced it, I also drooled over the RED ONE and the EPIC proper, but I (for now) can't afford them either, so I deal.

As of now... we are considering:

EPIC-S (from the old Scarlet name... or STANDARD model)
EPIC-X
EPIC-M (for monster machined)

Jim

I know we have to stop on this... sometime. But I think that IMHO could be an interesting option. It's all about "power", so:

- EPIC
- EPIC²
- EPIC³

You can go on exponentially to 4, 5 if new EPICs wear more and more power... And you can add some "letters" like (EPIC²-X, or EPIC²-Handmade, EPIC³-MONSTRO...) without make it a confusing awfull-codestyle name... Easy and simple.

Thanks for sharing RED Team!

The only thing I take from the name change for the low end Epic is to distinguish the S35 sensor line from the 2/3" Scarlet sensor line. It makes very good sense for this reason and I don't think it is an excuse to raise prices beyond what development, manufacturing, and support costs for the feature set and performance limits of the camera require. Have some faith that Red will do the best they possibly can to maintain an exceptional cost/performance ratio. Just don't expect them to compromise performance for low cost beyond a certain point with this generation of cameras. HDRx™ for all!

Understood. But after all, what we can figure out is the Epic-S is a new camera that will replace the project of another one, Scarlet S35.

I dislike to have to say it but I'd rather have the Scarlet S35 in any way whatsoever. Especially now with this information from yours that only stands and reforces my idea.

OK... I didn't quite get this. You would prefer the Scarlet S35 to the EPIC-S?

Simple. There are people who will never buy the 2/3rds. Me for example. But could buy the Scarlet S35.

Wow, deja vu. Sounds like many of the S35 Scarlet hopefuls are getting a nice taste of what us fixed-lens Scarlet hopefuls got many moons back: That is a price increase (albeit with more features) that places the product out of an affordable price range. Welcome to the club. :/

We are going to build the best cameras we can for the professional market. That means best specs and most features in the smallest package for the least amount we can charge and still stay in business. If one can't afford what we put out, there are several other options in the industry at every price point imaginable. One thing we won't do is improve our cameras significantly and then sell them for a loss.

Our program has and will change depending on a lot of things. Read my tagline.

So where would you draw the line for an affordable minimum practical shooting package price, less lenses for an S35? Forget about the name.

Jim! I am really impressed with your statement "least amount we can charge" In other words that you will be making a good profit, but that you are not out to make a massive profit by over charging the consumer. But I hope that instead by selling a fantastic product at a great price that you will sell very large numbers of innovative cameras. That is very admirable and unusual! I hope you make a massive amount of money with the Epics and Scarlets.

We are not trying to hit a certain price point. We are trying to hit capability milestones.

Jim

I'm sure a Scarlet Fixed will be available to rent in the $250/ day ballpark. For someone that's Squirreled away $3,000 to buy one, that should give you four complete weeks of shooting. In fact, renting one will probably be much cheaper than that. You could make two very low budget features or one huge documentary or up to eight short films in such a scenario. Believe me, buying the camera is the least of your costs.

Understood. You have to do what you have to do. I was just noting the similarity between what happened with us 2/3-fixed hopefuls and now the complaints of the S35 hopefuls (more than a few of which told us to suck it up). No worries, as you said there are plenty of choices out there, and more coming every day.

a quick recap: Scarlet is now Epic Light, but we're not all jazzed on Light, So Epic x and Epic S was considered, but was said to sound too similar; Jeff Coatney stuck a lump of coal up his ass, and we're all waiting on a new price point to reflect the new specs. Apart from the Jeff thing, it's a no brainer. ( :
