  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet S35 is now...

Way back when, I thought Epic-X was a special package reserved just for Stage II customers trading in their Red Ones. Is there any distinction any longer between the Epic body the Stage II customers get, and the one anyone can get? Not that it makes a difference to me. I'm in Scarlet-land. Just curious!

I remember that too - with the Epic-X having a slightly higher top framerate I believe.

EPIC-s35
EPIC-X
EPIC-M
?

????
What is S? What is X? What is M?

It are abslolutely unintelligible letters?

There is no any identifiction!

Light is much better! I need to untestand the parameters of camera before I read the a lot of words! Epic Light - I can understand there is Epic Hard is cool and smaller Epic Light is cool too but Less cool a little!

And What does is mean S or X or M????
It is nothing! Just a words! Without any hidden meaning!

Epic Extreme!
Epic Light!
I can understand Who is Who instantly!

I think 65 years should be enough time to disassociate a couple of letters from the alphabet with the Waffen SS. Besides, they used very distinctive letters that of course are linked.

Elsie, believe me. EPIC-SS would cost RED *a lot* of sales here in Germany.

Especially with all those skull and crossbones symbols.

errr ... have you not been following?
EPIC-X and EPIC-M are almost set in stone, words from the big man himself,
the debate is over the renamed scarlet s35 which he suggested as EPIC-S
but several people including myself pointed out that over the phone EPIC-S and EPIC-X sound similar.
This would also cause problems with non english speakers.
Therefore I suggested that EPIC-s35 is the logical alternative.

I hope that you don't stop here, Ted scared the hell out of me in Amsterdam when he said that the interchangeable lens Scarlet may not happen.

It's a really great 3D solution.
Why the 2/3rds and not also the S35 too? We can always stop down... The opposite is not exactly the same thing. The same faster lens with the same aperture will necessarily produce different results.

What happens with the binned sensor Epics? Weren't they originally called Epic-X?

Other than that, I think the naming scheme is great.

That wouldn't work - the "Epic-M and Epic-X" are also s35 sensors!

... I feel I'd be doing my students a disservice if I asked them to ignore their passions and their dreams. But I'd be doing them a greater disservice if I didn't ask them to put things into perspective.

Hi James

... i don´t want to derail this thread and thought a moment before posting.

Since you introduced yourself as a teacher, and you speak from a good heart with responsibility, I just wanted to let you know, that PERSPECTIVE is in the eyes of the one DREAMING UP the future and decides to follow his/her passion ....

Being an artist, there is no such thing as having to make compromises (in terms of lifestyle - and if one is radical, neither in art).

One does, what needs to be done. It is the calling. It is up to each of us to decide, wether to go on diet and walk to get to the EPIC goal - it is a process of self expression and transformation. We´d better teach resourcefulness, to who aspires.

One can and should always try and either succeeds or fails. part of the game.

this is growth and self expression which may or may not be in the realm of the teacher.

Please, do not kill the fire in those that dream as change happens in those moments of decision. Our mind expands to our task.

Sometimes, we need to jump to succeed.

All the best and love,
Detlev

P.S: The original post of Jason Sinclair, worth repeating:

... Those of you aspiring filmmakers i would strongly suggest to at least consider reorganizing your thinking. Don't limit yourself with price barriers. You have a good nine months up your sleeve. When you are passionate and dedicated you will make it happen. Don't settle for anything short. Some risks in life are worth taking. This is one of them. I believe some of the most innovate work from these cameras will come from you guys. The capabilities of a new paradigm of story telling with this camera is phenomenal. There probably has never been a greater point in the history of cinema bar the invention of the movie camera right here right now. Try for it. What have you got to loose?

2.5 stops extra light required for the larger sensor to get the same DoF.

3D likes more DoF

Producers like spending less money..........

If I need 4 * Dino, 6 * 20Kw, 4 * 18Kw hmi, 8 * 12Kw hmi, 30 * 6Kw hmi and a ton of smaller lamps to get T2 on a 35mm size sensor then I want to shoot the same scene in 3D I need twice as much light to compensate for the mirror and then I need to up the level a couple of stops for good 3D

If I switch to a smaller sensor I can get away with my original lighting list

That lighting list is from a shot sequence that took weeks to rig, laying cable etc and 3 days to shoot.

I don't want to increase the rig time any more.

Begin Rant:

Everybody is crying about the possibility of the "Scarlet S35" slipping away beyond your price range. What was the plan for having enough money to buy accessories for it in the first place? You have to have more than just the brain to get a shootable rig. Aren't we putting the cart before the horse here just a bit?

Honestly, it makes perfect sense to price the new Epic S appropriately for its market and feature set. If I had saved ONLY enough for the Scarlet S35, I'd put that money on a Fixed lens Scarlet 2/3rd's and punch a hole in the sky with the money I'd have left over- all of it going on the screen in beautiful, pristine 2K digital projection.

If an MX'd Red One is $25,000 and a 5K Epic X is $28,000+modules ($35,000 approx), anyone thinking you're going to get a camera that sits firmly between these two in capability for $8,000+ ($15,000) is crazy. Sure, when it was a stripped down 35mm box it made sense-- but the product evolved to a point that put it very close to the EPIC X. That can't be a cheap trick to pull off.

But the big besides here is: If you see the Scarlet Fixed as somehow limiting to your toolset as a filmmaker because its not "35mm" then what does that really say about your plans and your skills? If you can't make compelling cinema with the Scarlet Fixed then you have a deficit of creativity and skill that no 35mm camera will ever make up for.

End Rant...

Jim, love the new nomenclature.

OK boys... this is not the NBA Finals. We haven't locked anything in stone. We'll listen to respectful suggestions, add some of our own thoughts and make a decision without a vote. I have been known to close threads.

Jim

Jim,

You're not really going to be selling EPIC-M's beyond this short time frame, right? So why include them in your line at all? Since they are essentially the same brain as EPIC-X, I'd call them that with some other insignia; "limited/signature edition" as was suggested.

Save the differentiations in names for differentiations in brains. You're going to have S35, FF35, 645, and 617 (which sounds less than 645). I'd keep the -M out and use designations for the four sensors, or for any other brain differences. Then use a similar convention for the Scarlet series: Fixed 2/3, 2/3, and ....?

Edit: Oh, this thread is about Epic-S specifically? Whatever you want to call it is fine, just consider where the future brain names will fit in to the mix and how the Scarlet naming convention will match lest you end up with model number soup like many other manufacturers.

I for one am glad the s35 Scarlet is gone because I don't have to worry about my investment getting eaten away by every person with $6,000 and the belief that they are a DP.

Thank you Jim for identifying Red as a professional company. Can't wait for my Epic!

I have a stupid question for Stage II reservation holders who are concerned about Epic-S effecting their revenues.

If the final Epic-S is in fact the same as Epic-X in every regard save frame and data rates it would surely rent for less than X. The question is; Why would that concern you? Do you expect that to have a negative impact on your rentals? If so, why?

Is it not easier for a rental house to own a better model and rent it at a discount if needed, rather than loose out on the higher end clients who want the X?
