  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet S35 is now...

At least they're not calling it the EPIC-CRPL

Could be worse, they could go for EPIC Student, EPIC Home Premium, and EPIC Ultimate. :)

At one point I thought EPIC-X was the EPIC for previous RED ONE owners and then there would just be EPIC for new customers.

Yes EPIC X was the name for the original stages 1,2,3 offer.
Stage 4 - open to anyone, was simply EPIC.

How about just "Epic" and "Epic LT". The "M" and "X" designations would go after the serial number, not the model name, since they refer to manufacturing differences, not functional differences. That way, there's a way to distinguish them without causing undue naming confusion or setting up the potential for even more confusion in the future, as other models come out. I like the XT and Turbo designations, but not sure they're necessary at this point.

Heh heh... lots of crap on EPIC Light.

How about EPIC-A (the old Scarlet S35), the big brother EPIC-X and the machined monster EPIC-M?

Jim

Heheh ;) I'll stick to my suggestion from the beginning of the thread for now

...although "light" ? come on, you can do cooler than that ;)
or why not just EPIC S ??? for SuperSaverOption, Small , Slim , "S-aves you money" :D
(even "slow-er" would fit - ok, no marketing deathsentences allowed) or in my case "smartass"
cheers!

Lotsa people seem to come up with that as well - which also tells me how much of a thread most people read ;)

"A" is to big for a small version of something. Maybe you can just set up a poll... if you like the community to name it ;)

EPIC diet :emote_whack:

EPIC S seems like a logical suffix

they are limited edition hand made first out of the factory (to the public) I think that deserves some special classification it would be a shame for them to get mixed up with normal epics, as I said not the same so the name should be different and where people can see it not on the serial.

I truly feel the first in the series should simply be called Epic (or Epic One). There should be no suggestion that its a "lesser" camera. And I do think it should have 5K images, HDRx™ and atleast a decent range of framerates possible. That's the Epic USP after all.

The higher end model can be Epic-X (for extended).

The limited edition models should probably have custom names engraved given there'll only be a 100 or so and they are all guaranteed to become collectors items.

I hate to say it but Light sounds too much like, uh, Lite. How about this naming convention Jim?

EPIC (Standard EPIC) formerly Scarlet S35.

EPIC-X (Expanded EPIC).

EPIC-LTD (Limited Production, hand machined and assembled body and select accessories, signed by Jim Jannard) which is now the Pre-Production EPIC-M.

EPIC
EPIC-X
EPIC-LTD

I know, I know... :beatdeadhorse5:

Flame-proof suit: Check.

I don't really understand the concept behind "developing" a "Scarlet" S35 in the first place. Quote marks because whatever the "lite" version turns out to be, it's really just a crippled Epic. Since the lesser camera resulted from the Epic, not the other way around, why spend development funds to create something less capable than the superior camera you've already invented? I can understand working to improve a product, but not to lessen it.

My assumptions are that the two cameras are physically identical, and the only difference is a couple of boards. How much difference can that really make in the price? Is it really significant? Considering the price of a complete shooting package with all accessories, power, support, etc. - and lenses, just how much is saved by purchasing an Epic-Lite? And, more importantly, why on earth would anyone take such a short term savings over the considerable down-side?

Am I correct that the Epic-Lite will be superior to the Red One? Wow. Why spring for the big-bad Epic? Just for high frame-rates? A lot of people never over-crank. And... what happens to the value of a Red One? I can guess, and it's not pretty.

I think it's quite the juggling act; price Epic-Lite cheap enough so those who can't justify a full Epic can afford it, but not so cheap to make the "full" Epic a foolish buy. I imagine Rental houses could provide the answer as they know what happens to even slightly less capable models when more capable cameras are available for only slightly higher rates.

I can much more easily see the case for a 2/3" Scarlet as it's the equivalent to offering 35MM & 16MM film cameras and a smaller sensor is an advantage for many kinds of work. I'm not crazy about any camera with a fixed lens, however. Again, I don't get it, especially from a company that is committed to selling only "professional" cameras.

OK, it's just my opinion; I'm eagerly awaiting Stage 3, so I'm committed to Red & Epic, I'm just not too crazy about the Epic-Lite idea.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

@Leo. Interesting thoughts there. You may be on the right track with this.

2 models:

Scarlet (2/3") both fixed and interchangeable lens versions.
EPIC (S35)

As spec'ed out previously and both with the new HDRx™.

The EPIC Lite may not be necessary. Hmm, thoughts anyone?
