  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet S35 is now...

If the "EPIC Lite" comes out around $18,000-$19,000 in a shootable form (includes viewfinder, LCD, at least 2 CF cards or a drive, at least two batteries, in/outs, nikon lens mount, etc.), and I can actually buy it in February even though I'm not a RED ONE owner - I am sold.

As it is, I'm looking into buying a Sony F3 when it comes out...I had enough for an Epic-X, but I also needed all the other things a small film company would use...so it was a choice between Epic and nothing (a bit overkill and impractical for me) or the Sony F3 (a bit underkill but allows me to afford everything I need.)

Now if I can get an Epic Lite/Scarlet package, being S35 with 3K or more with all the RAW loveliness that Red offer, in February or so, then no more Sony for me!!!

Well, as Juliet said to Romeo (Light): "'Tis but thy name that is my enemy/ Thou art thyself, though not an Epic. What's Epic? it is not hand, nor foot, nor any other part belonging to a pro. What's in a name?... A rose by any other name would smell as sweet." ( :

I think the separation is a good/smart branding move.

I know it's superficial but a lot of my clients are into "names". If we're in an audio studio and they see Neve equipment they feel comfortable, even though I'm not even using the Neve gear. From a client pov, having "Epic" as opposed to "Scarlet" on the gear list will impress many and very likely create work. They won't have a clue why it's better, but they will know Epic is the top end so they will want it.

I'm keen to see features for the Lite version when you have time, Jim. Could you at least let it get up to 60fps, 5k? I like shooting stuff at 50fps (PAL country here). I'd see it as fair if it didn't have HDRx. Not sure that will be a popular idea but "Lite" has to have some 'drawbacks' in comparison to buying the Big Beastie.

I think your decision to do this is a good thing.... definitely solidifying the RED line and making clear distinctions.

What's in a name?...

Scarlet S35...called EPIC Light. The features have changed as has the price. I'll update in the next two weeks.

What's in a name?...well mostly image..and apparently many are
already refering to Epic Light as Epic Lite either accidently or ???

This seems not the image Red projects for anything.
Uncompromised and professional seem the M.O. and doesn't go w/ Lite.

well you at least wouldn't have to put the "MX" because it's all MX. that cuts a little bit out haha. i see your point though

For now. I'm sure RED will want to keep their S35 brains up to date on their latest generation sensors though seeing as the vast majority of films are still being shot on that size. And like the REDOne I doubt at that point they'll rebrand the brain even if it does have increased functionality.

I agree with you; the word "light" (or "lite") is beneath what this camera represents. In fact, there's nothing light about the type of products Jim and the REd team are creating for us, and for this industry in general.

I wouldn't read too much into it. I know I'm just referring to it as "Lite" until more concrete info is available.

Storm in a tea cup.

I don't mind the name considering all my other cameras have names with a series of numbers and letters, he could have called it EPIC DUMP for all I care, I just want one.... well It's not in my current price range but someday.

I never understand the science beneath this naming your products insanity.

First there was a DVX100. Then, an HVX200. Not an HVX100 or a DVX200, as one would expect. Then there is the EX-1 and the EX-3, showing us not everybody needs the number 2. But then there was digital cinema, and we need to sell video to the artists, and not the tech guys, so people started expressing their creativity more openly than just inventing their own systems of logic and mathematics.

Thats when the camera maker that made us familiar with the 435, 535, and 235, decides to call his new cam ALEXA, maybe because the french guys were using PENELOPE for their new cool model. Gladly, there is room for Adriana, Martina and even Gwendolin for the future models, I'd just hope they could make easier for us to tell the German makers apart from the french. Should I suggest FRIDA and SOPHIE?

In the end, calling a camera Alexa, just shows us how irrelevant a camera name can really be.

After all, nothing screams professional more than the name Penelope - well, maybe it actually does in some neighbourhoods.

For those of you who do not own a Red product, this may come as a disappointing shock, but for those of us who invested early, before Red was fully proven, this announcement is right on course, and I must say a very good one.

When you are in the Red camp you need to be prepared for change, often drastic and game/plan changing.

While I do feel for those who held onto the thought that they would get an Epic-style camera for a D-SLR budget, this move makes total sense.

There should be a linear price increase as the cameras become more capable.

As it stood, there were very few features separating the Scarlet S35 and Epic-X.

Indies should be over the moon with the Scarlet. Just 4 years ago you would be shooting on HDV for heaven's sake!

When you are ready for Epic you will easily be able to afford it. Believe me the money rolls in and THAT'S what will let you know you are ready, not that Jim should subsidize the entire industry single handed.

Jim and team are doing a fantastic job taking care of the entire industry, from students to the top names in the business and we have a lot to thank them for.

I have spent over $60,000 putting my kit together that was originally advertised as $17,500. The most expensive pieces aren't from Red so reality has a price friends!

Things change and we all knew what we were signing up for.

No whinging, no screeching "unfair" please.
