  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet S35 is now...

Yeah, Coors Light is an oxymoron (I'm a Guinness drinker).

Epic S ? Scarlet E ? or Epic L for that matter???

Whatever it is called, it will surely be an epicedium to most other cameras. ( :

I'm very interested in this particular camera -- more so than the EpicX even.

I've got a RED1 and have been keen to hold onto it until an Epic FF or 645 comes out, at which point I would trade it for one of those (monstro sensor and super high resolution for commercial work) ...

Provided of course I'm able to get 1 or 2 S35 Scarlet (now Epic L) in the meantime and also assuming they work well for more straightforward narrative cinema and come in at the right price point.

So I have high hopes for this camera to deliver :)

Fantastic. Epic was the camera I wanted but knew I couldn't justify. EPIC light will be just right.
RED should scrap the Scarlet concept, they are a professional camera company that should focus on professional tools. Having so many prosumer units out there would lessen their brand and be a massive headache for tech support and firmware management.

What aspect of Scarlet is at all prosumer? :}

A fixed lens has sort of been associated with prosumer, but a professional grade fixed lens would come in very handy. For the kind of quality and price Red is giving us in the fixed, I sort of view it as a really high end zoom lens...that just so happens to have a brain attached to it. If you were trying to buy a similar quality zoom lens for S16 for the 2/3" Cinema, you are going to be paying close to the price of a fixed anyway. Might as well have a zoom lens that can function as a second camera, too. :}

Can't imagine why they would want to "scrap" something because they would sell "so many" (too many?) units. Isn't that a little like running away from something because you are afraid of success? And your implication that Scarlet is not a "professional tool" is just plain silly.

It would appear that RED has put a lot of resources into developing Scarlet, including the very high quality, integrated fixed lens. And Jim himself has said in the last 24 hours " I am a big Scarlet fan..." so, thankfully for the rest of us, your idea doesn't appear to have much validity in the world of RED. Personally, I am more psyched than ever for the Scarlet Fixed.

In a world where "professionals" are shooting features on DSLR's and expecting the footage to pass German QC for distribution, the term "prosumer" means very little to me.

Lol maybe people who think that Epic Light sounds too sissy should just man up and get an Epic X?

Okay, I kid... I kid! :smilielol5:

Does "Coors Light" sound more sissy than "Coors"? Not to me.

:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin: Did I say sissy...? hehe... no...

With all the Bomb this, Monstro that, Recon, Rocket, Gunner etc, you get the idea... Light doesn't seem worthy enough (IMHO!) for an EPIC camera.

But ultimately it doesn't matter. It's the images, not the image of the camera, that matter.

The entire RED program is now dedicated to professionals, including those that aspire to become professionals. It is all about us doing our best effort and putting out the best equipment we can conceive. Scarlet 2/3" has grown into a full professional system. We also have ideas for a future Scarlet that fits well with this category.

Changing Scarlet S35 to an EPIC name is only right. It is entirely based on the EPIC S35. Many people can't afford an EPIC-X and there are features in that camera that are expensive to produce and not needed by everyone... namely frame rates and data rates (plus a few others). We probably should have done this from the beginning, but we had no idea what we were doing 3 years ago.

Jim

It only makes sense to change the name. I'm kind of excited that my Scarlet S35 will now be officially an Epic line camera even though it makes no practical difference :p

EPIC Light.....hmmm the Diet Coke of EPIC. I like Diet Coke. ;)

called EPIC Light. The features have changed as has the price.

Jim

The fact that the price has changed and it's adopting the Epic moniker is very worrisome. The S35 was the camera I was gonna purchase, and have been waiting to purchase patiently for years, but I'm afraid that this is gonna shove it out of my price range, forcing me to get the 2/3 inch Scarlet... or worse... a 5D... *shudder*.

I hope my fears are put to rest, but I've got a bad feeling about this.

So to simplify...

Scarlet = 2/3"

Epic = S35+

Yes?

Makes sense but I would say limit "Epic" to just the S35 line. Otherwise the names are going to get pretty long. "Epic S35 MX Lite". We're getting into Microsoft length names if RED ever comes out with a new generation S35 chip and wants to keep the Epic branding.

Yeah..no matter if it's Light..Lite..LT..or just L it seems out of place among
all the above mentioned names. Not mention the Red metal buzz saw and
winged skull graphic. They can do better.

well you at least wouldn't have to put the "MX" because it's all MX. that cuts a little bit out haha. i see your point though

Thank you. I fit into that category. As a filmmaker and future owner of the camera with no desire to get into the rental business, I need an entry level production package that is reasonable to put together without breaking the bank.

I think this change will be an enabler for that.

I do think the moniker "Epic Lite" should be dropped in favor of just "Epic". This should be the foundational model, and everything else goes up from here.

Thanks to the RED team! I'm looking forward to the time I can own this baby.
