  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet Rental rates?

Here is our rates, operating out of stockholm but our gear is out world wide. So I guess we are a bit low on prices, but I rather see the stuff being used then laying around in the office. I believe the lifetime for all camera equipment lately has shrinked exponentially and will continue to do so even faster now when film is passed.

here is our rental prices, we never charge more than that, then returning clients, cool jobs, big jobs and such gets discount.

wow, thats more like 1,5-2% of total value....very cheap! If I am ever in Stockholm shooting I will definatley rent from you;)

I have always though rental houses based their prices on about 1% of the value of the equipment. I think 2% would be pretty good for the rental house.

$645 a day for that kit is incredibly cheap, but that just reflects the incredibly compeptitive rentalmarket in L.A and should in no way reflect the prices in a less competitive market.

It's not incredibly cheap, it's at the higher end of 'normal' pricing,

I also think it will be around 1%, especially considering there will be much more cameras on the market than the demand can meet. Price will necessarily go down quickly. But this will allow lower budget projects to get access to this kind of high level gear which is a good thing too.

As with all things in life, they have a beginning. A preamble or introductory statement is expected when arguing a point...

I think the point is that there are many serious and substantial business arguments to be made for rental vs. purchase depending on the project, the business model, the equipment, the personnel, etc. Rental is quite obviously a well-established (and very competitive) business for a reason. Not everyone wants or needs to own a camera to shoot their project. It's as simple as that. They are not "suckers."

I don't plan on really making my kit for rent. I will rent it, but I will try and attach myself to it in some form.

But if I were to rent it, I'd probably rent it for about 300-400/day.

That will be with 2x V-mount batteries and 2x 64GB cards (for now).

Thank you for all the information. I am trying to asses the feasibility of renting a Scarlet for a small production next year, or attempting to finance one for purchase.

what do you guys think a Red MX package should now rent for, let's say if you have a scarlet X and a Red One MX, what would you rent those at comparatively speaking?

1-3% is standard, with 1-2% being most common.

If I'm doing something low budget, with my own money, I ask for 1% across the board. If it's for another client, I'll pass through higher rental amounts as needed. I think this is pretty standard...

Agreed.

In the DC market, a well kitted MX rents for ~$800-900/day

I'm wondering what the going rates are for a base Scarlet package. Would it be around the same as a One MX kit in the local area, generally speaking?

Anthony,

I'll have a Scarlet with both PL and Canon mounts soon. I'll give you the super-special deal, since I know you've been waiting patiently for years! Max

Currently the Sony F3, FS 100, etc rent for more than $400 a day with any real tools as a small kit. The RED Scarlet X is a professional tool capable of shooting 4K. It seems to me those of us who purchased these cameras have a small responsibility to not reduce the rental pricing of a camera to a non-professional level. Even the XHA1 Canon and Sony Ex 1 are renting for $275 a day with nothing but the body and 1 SxS card. If you have a true filmmakers kit, I don't see why someone wouldn't rent this camera for a feature at around $500 - $750 a day. In my opinion it has huge advantages over the RED ONE in the sense it is lightweight. The RED ONE is amazing, but not very portable and doesn't work with the DSMC toolkit accessories, and the Scarlet X has a very valuable tool, which is 14 -16 or so stops of latitude with HDRx

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it was my understanding that the SCARLET and EPIC have a bit of a different color science implemented with RAW formats as well. If this is the case, this is also something our clients need to know on the advantage. The facts are that outside of 5K and 300fps, high speed etc, the cameras are identical in quality at 4K and Quad HD. Any filmmaker will be happy to save quite a bit and shoot 4K if on a budget if choosing the Scarlet over the Epic to save money. We don't have to give it away for the cost of a beta cam rental.

The RED ONE is difficult to setup on a rig and a lot more expensive things have to be added to the rental kit like more weight capable tripods, a larger crew, etc.

Overall, the Sony F3 rents for more than $400 - $500 a day, so lets lot discount our Scarlets like they are not worth anything. If you have a real kit, price it right in order to not kill the local market and make it worth something. Overall, I know a lot of guys rent their equipment to make some return, but if you have ever seem rental equipment and the way people treat it, you want to build something into the cost of the package that can cover some repair should it get damaged. $300 a day is way low to me, but it is your camera.

Remember this camera is essentially the Epic S, so just because some people had the perception that Scarlet would be a pro-sumer camera, it is our responsibility to educate our clients to understand this is essentially the Epic minus a few features and the Scarlet is now a professional 4K tool.
