  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet preview...

Jarred said Scarlet would need a different side SSD module due to different body dimensions. Should be on the list of stuff revealed on the 3rd. May be a different side handle too.

I would only be interested in CF if we can use 64GB cards or larger. And even then, only if they are more economical and provide all the shooting modes available to the SSD.

RED SSD's are expensive up front, but currently are cheaper per GB than P2 cards or the RED (or similar) CF cards or other such FLASH media from other camera makers. SSD media and subsequent hard drive / LTO storage is cheaper by far than developing and scanning film and also cheaper than shooting to tape.

I have 7x 256GB SSD's and 4x 128GB SSD's... I cringe when I think about what I paid for them... Especially since the first 4 of those 256GB modules were bought at the full price -- before RED started selling 4-packs. But when I add up the cost per GB of HDD and LTO storage after the fact and compare that with the cost of previous tech where we shot and stored on mini-DV, DVCPRO and HDCAM tapes, this all suddenly seems very cheap. There is no cost comparison between this and film. It's "cheap".

I would like to see a CF option for Scarlet if possible. Doubt I would personally make use of it, but the more options the better and CF may work out well for a lot of people. If it's reasonable to offer it...

really? i don't remember this, i thought that the one SSD module would fit both. The one in the store does have a minus next to the scarlet though. well we shall see. I'm positive that there will be a scarlet SSD option, theres been many mentions of moving to SSD and not so much on the CF cards anymore.

The renderings and photos we've seen of Scarlet up to this point have shown a slightly different brain size than Epic. Who knows what it looks like at this point, but it could just be a case of that particular side module doesn't fit Scarlet. There could very easily be a different, Scarlet-compatible SSD module. In fact, knowing what I know about RED's history and given the little they have shown about the new camera to this point, I would be very surprised if they're sticking with compact flash only for the new camera. I wouldn't assume too much based on the old graphic in the web store.

It is interesting to note, however, that the main photo of the SSD module in the red.com store is the one used in the images and videos that have shown Scarlet prototypes. Check the witness mark on the side in the picture on red.com and see for yourself. Could of course be a mistake, or maybe a hint.

One thing to consider is that the RED web site isn't always accurate and up to the second when it comes to content. Who knows...

I prefer the SSD option myself if it's available, simply because larger capacity cards are available. Being able to shoot non-stop, or at least without making a run to the ingest station during the day is big for my workflow.

After hearing rumors of an SSD->CF adapter, I wonder if it'd be possible to have some kind of buffering, where the SSD would hold the data at full rate, and could then offload to the CF even if it hiccups. This would enable you to hand a client the card directly, without the cost of high-performance cards... although, it's probably better in the end to have top-bin chips and assembly tolerances for the storage media.

In P2-land, it's nice to be able to hot-swap a card in the non-active slot, enabling continuous shooting without a huge pile of cards. A dual SSD module would be nifty some day too.

I believe scarlet will have SSD cards but not with tha same SSD module. most likely there will be a inbuilt ssd module:yesnod:

I strongly believe scarlet will have side handle because it is necessary for hand held shooting(remember DSMC and still photos need some sort of balanced/side handle) however scarlet mat have fixed side handle instead of removable.

Scarlet is part of the DSMC system, whatever the final spec may be, and will use the same accessories; the side handle I ordered for my Scarlet arrives tomorrow, according to Fedex :-)

Hmm....

We have "Officially" entered the Calm before the "Storm".

39.5 hrs left :hurray:

This wont happen. I am pretty sure.

Without the side handle, where you are supposed to put the REDVolt ?

About the Scarlet, Jim announced a "new" Scarlet for nov 3rd. So I think it'll be a different Scarlet than the 3K prototypes we saw. This is really exciting !

Can we expect at least a free RED cap & RED tshirt with each Scarlet ?

I have a feeling that they(RED) will offer different options for powering your Scarlet. Not everyone wants the side handle I think. The idea of modular would in my mind mean that there will be many different ways to config a working "package".

We'll soon see!! ;)
