  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet preview...

Sure, but there are 600 X Cards 16 GB out there which should be totally sufficient. RED Cards are 400X, I think.

I thought the only cards that were verified by Red to work other than Red's own card, is the Lexar 300x? Granted, a 400x or 600x should be more robust. However, Jim posted at one point that Red's own cards were made to much more rigorous standards than any other because of the imperative nature of what the camera is doing. Others have also reported dropped frames from 3rd party cards. How many? It seems rare. And I don't know what cards they are using. However, if I'm going to pick up a Scarlet and going the CF path, I'd seriously consider at least one Red CF card as the "workhorse" card, and then buy from there how you see fit.

I'm surprised how many people want the limited CF option. I know it's bigger initial cost to get into SSD's but I don't think anyone will regret it once they make that jump. The reliability and speed of the mags will make all the difference. Not to mention the convenience of not having to change out cards as often...

There is one instance where, IF Scarlet can handle 3rd party 600x cards fine, where you'd want that: A client hires you to shoot something only. You shoot on their cards, hand them their card back at the end of the day, and you're done.

Of course there's also the cost. Some people have less money and are still very pinched by the recession and are scrimping and saving to the last penny to justify any cost here.

That is the luxury of the rich man. It get's cheaper by the dusin.

Not too long back Jim said that the Scarlet was dropping CF for SSD. I'm assuming that's still accurate, but I guess we won't know for sure for a couple more days. He also mentioned something about an SSD to CF adapter, for those that still want a cheaper recording option.

in three nights !!!

hopeful that the € does not go much more down...
things in greece are not going to put positive effects in the game...

Some cards PEAK at 600x but fail to deliver that consistently. If it can't sustain its rated performance, you may drop frames.

RED 16GB cards are more like 650X. And if you benchmark most "600X" cards on the market, you will find that they perform more like 300X ~ 400X and very erratically at that -- a big reason RED has never certified other cards. But when it all comes down to it, making something that small that can also operate that fast, with consistency, every time, over a decent lifespan is not easy, not at all. Why do you think we don't have 32GB and 64GB or whatever RED CF cards? Why do you think most off the shelf cards can't meet the advertised numbers, which are usually derived from burst measurements? This stuff isn't easy. And even more difficult if needed to be designed for sale at consumer prices.

Not everyone with SSD's is rich. I'm rather poor but I'd still pay for the SSD over CF. I don't want to change cards every 3 minutes.

Agreed. In my opinion, if you can afford a Scarlet, then you should be able to at least be able to afford a $950 64gb SSD. It's the whole P2 Card Example. I had to pay $900+ for a 16GB card just a few years ago and the HVX200 is only a $5000 Camera compared to whatever Scarlet comes out to (At least 6 or 7 thousand), so relativity and perspective in terms of how vital media is to any shooter's camera package. If that extra amount is stretching your budget, then one may want to reconsider if they are ready to make the jump to this camera system or not yet. There are always many more costs to owning a camera than just the body, especially when buying into a modular design. Jim has said everything they do will be Pro, and to me that means SSD over CF is a no brainer...

Full 3k 12:1 would buy you about 18 minutes on a 16gb CF Card. Still, if you're on a long shoot, and planning on shooting 7:1, I'd much rather shoot to one or two SSDs than a fistful of CF's if at all possible.

Here's a very good page showing how to calculate Redcode data rates.

Presuming the camera comes with the module. Otherwise, it's $1500 from the Red Store. I hear you on the P2 issue though. I have a few of those I swallowed hard to purchase as well. Love them, but scary expensive.

"Phil-Presuming the camera comes with the module. Otherwise, it's $1500 from the Red Store." I think you did not check it or missed it on Red store. SSD module is not compatible with Scarlet.

I know you guys can't reveal any details but how about a picture of some part of the camera. Just like the good ole days :).

If we interpret SSD module logically on Red store.... it may means that Scarlet will have inbuilt SSD receiver... and same is the case with the PL mount and DSMC side handles...most likely all these will be inbuilt in scarlet. I could be wrong. I am sorry in advance for wrong:cryin: guessing

The renderings and photos we've seen of Scarlet up to this point have shown a slightly different brain size than Epic. Who knows what it looks like at this point, but it could just be a case of that particular side module doesn't fit Scarlet. There could very easily be a different, Scarlet-compatible SSD module. In fact, knowing what I know about RED's history and given the little they have shown about the new camera to this point, I would be very surprised if they're sticking with compact flash only for the new camera. I wouldn't assume too much based on the old graphic in the web store.

I was extrapolating the thought that a Scarlet SSD would be about the same price. Maybe it will not.

Here's another way to calculate for the penny pinchers out there. If Scarlet doesn't come with SSD. You'd spend $2400 to get the module and a 64gb SSD. Four 16gb Red CF cards would cost you half that. If you're willing to "risk" using third party CF cards, the Lexar 32gb 600x cards on Amazon go for $232, and the SanDisk 64gb 600x for $400. Cutting the price from the SSD to a sixth.

Though I'm sure Red will tell you flat out if you use these 3rd party cards there is no guarantee they will even work, and if you end up with dropped frames, audio or other compatibility issues while on set or in post, don't come crying to them.

There is no Scarlet SSD module in the shop because the scarlet will always be sold as package with the module. So you never would need to order one seperately. My guess...
