  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet preview...

I am not sure you are right if you also consider the cost of sensor development and all the boards and firmware to coordinate with it.

Well, as someone who has his own custom hardware/firmware camera (with a 4MP global shutter sensor @ 120 fps) and is now upgrading said hardware to a newer sensor (12.2MP global shutter @ 120fps) with the same board design, I can say a few things about this.

1. You can reuse a lot with a new sensor, but if the data rate changes out of spec for the board, there will be a redesign of the board. (One way to mitigate this is to reduce the data rate immediately after pulling off the sensor, if you actually don't need the extra resolution.)
2. Redesigning a working board is not a particularly scary thing to do, but it's also not instantaneous. It's much, MUCH easier than designing the original board from scratch.
3. Actually hooking the new sensor to an existing board design is not hard.

S35 and higher aperture and ISO does the same. It requires good ISO performance though, but Canon has this.

35mm lenses are larger, heavier, and more limited in aperture and zoom range compared to a good 16mm or 2/3" zoom though. You would have to carry a bag full of lenses to match the range, speed, and utility of a single 2/3" 20x servo zoom for equal performance and the lenses alone would weigh more than the entire 2/3" rig.

This thread is as mad as a box of frogs....

'Expectations' thread + 'I want to tell you..' thread x 'November 3rd...' thread = Wild speculations, arguments over speculations, guess work, pain, anguish, and Jim posting during hours most people who don't have a company to run are nomally asleep

Well said!
Are you serious? I don't know anyone in the TV world who is hugely concerned about 4K, right now. Producers are desperately trying to CUT costs, not add to them with a 4K workflow.

4K cinema, absolutely. If you can afford it, it is a no brainer. TV, 1080p is king and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Which is why 2/3rds sensors are still useful for some kinds of work, even essential.

Thought - once more I know close to nothing about camera manufacturing - so don't even know if this is possible. What if over the last few months, RED have been stripping the traded in Red One's and recycling their parts in Scarlet? This would surely cut massive costs, no?

Jim has also said in the past that 3k is as good as it gets for less than $10k. Epic-S was expected to price out more like the RED 1 with similar performance.
The only price Jim Jannard ever mentioned for Epic-S was "somewhere in the neighborhood of $12K." He said that in January of this year.

I completely disagree. 2/3" sensors have essentially no benefits what so ever. Why? Because a s35 sensor can shoot s35 or 2/3" in the same package. A FF35 sensor can shoot 2/3", s35 or FF35. 2/3" sensors are only limiting.

Let's not all forget Silicon Imaging the first company to deliver a touchscreen controlled, Bayer Pattern, RAW, wavelet encoded modular camera system. ;)

I agree, a FF35 sensor can shoot 2/3'', s35 and FF35 but differs with prices and setup. I really want a Red FF35!

Yes, lets not forget Silicon Imaging either Red has been getting more competition, if any, from the little guys than the big ones. November the third SHOULD be where Canon makes a hit for Red but it will likely be a tickle, we shall see.

Remember, Remember, the 3rd of November...

definitely post of the month right there! come on!

Anyone else noticed that on the store the DSMC SSD Side module says that it is incompatible with Scarlet? Am I reading too far into this?

Maybe CF cards making a come back? haha,

But thats actually really interesting...never saw that before,

isnt the difference in the bodies the width rather than the height? even the length is the same right? or was at least...
