  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet preview...

I completely disagree. 2/3" sensors have essentially no benefits what so ever. Why? Because a s35 sensor can shoot s35 or 2/3" in the same package. A FF35 sensor can shoot 2/3", s35 or FF35. 2/3" sensors are only limiting.

There is one major advantage, lower manufacturing cost. Dedicated 3k at 2/3" is better for me than 2k at 2/3" from a larger sensor.

They're not as bad as you assume. You can get a 458 Italia for about the same price as a nice house with a studio shop . . . and all new gear . . . and a . . . .

You don't have to be rich to afford a Ferrari... you just have to want a Ferrari more than eating nothing but rice and beans. :D
Truism. And one I can verify. Oh, and there are at least 1,000 ways to prepare beans and rice.:yesnod:

It was great to be young and single and without obligations
Unless you have a spouse who is totally committed with you, this is a very important point.

I prefer 2/3 for documentary / ENG work: can't afford a focus puller on these gigs...I think Scarlet has to fill that market, enough 35mm options out there for other types of work

In fact, I am into Scarlet and not Epic solely for that reason.

I cant wait.. x-mas in early nov i cant help but feel there are a bag of there goodies we don't know about

I was under the impression that Scarlet has always been a professional camera. Am I missing something?

Difficult to make a case for 1080p nowadays, even for TV.

Are you serious? I don't know anyone in the TV world who is hugely concerned about 4K, right now. Producers are desperately trying to CUT costs, not add to them with a 4K workflow.

4K cinema, absolutely. If you can afford it, it is a no brainer. TV, 1080p is king and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

I doubt the sensor itself is a substantial portion of any camera system's price so much as pixels per second fill rate. Even the camera isn't a significant portion of a camera system's price. I would prefer to spend a tiny bit more and have a s35 camera limited to 24 fps that also shoots 120fps 3k than a camera that only shoots 3k.

Then again Jim keeps saying "invest in a system where everything can be upgraded." Hopefully he's speaking beyond camera modules to sensors. Maybe the Epic-S body will have multiple sensor options.

I am not sure you are right if you also consider the cost of sensor development and all the boards and firmware to coordinate with it. As Jim has stated many times, this stuff is harder than anyone thought. Getting the huge data throughput on the various flavors of RED sensors, along with the development of REDCode RAW, seems like the reason others, like Canon, have been unable to catch up.

There are two important factors you forget about:

The Scarlet 2/3" sensor has significantly higher resolution than the s35 sensor. It does not make sense to use the same pixel size for s35 because lenses covering that format will not have the resolution to make use of it. Having more pixels than any lens can resolve will just add more demands on the electronics. That will cost more, generate more heat and shorten battery life.

RED found out that it was not possible to cram the electronics for s35 into the Scarlet body. It might be possible with the next generation electronics, but that is certainly not happening this year.

So, the hybrid solution gives up two important 2/3" advantages: Compactness and battery life. In addition, you end up with either insufficient sensor resolution for the best 16mm and 2/3" lenses or the cost of processing an unusably high number of pixels in s35. Not to mention a significant cost increase.

OK a thought. Scarlet S35 became EPIC-S, guessed price point (RED quote): $12k.

Quite a few respected people here on this thread are saying 'if you were expecting a sub-$10k camera, think again". Jim says "Scarlet is now a professional camera. It will be more expensive"

EPIC-S was tentatively scheduled for the 'fall'.

*checks temperature outside.... yep! More like winter in NYC in fact....*

Maybe, maybe, 2/3" has been dropped and what was to have been EPIC-S *IS* now 'Scarlet', again, and will be going on sale on the 3rd...

Doesn't suit me: I'd sooner have Scarlet Fixed sub $10k; that I could afford without hesitation as a simple second unit cam. We'll see. Whatever happens, I trust Jim; I'm sure it will be... Epic :-)

Jim just answered to those speculations on other thread:

Mike,
Not that one more opinion helps, but I do think something close to what Ted was showing for around $6K is still the core product we'll see on the 3rd. Putting together all the little hints here and there, I think the conjecture by so many is what has made this confusing. Imagine: Red replaces the CF card with SSD and calls that more Pro, but the assumptions are more Pro means 5K. If I had to bet, I'd say the product on the 3rd will look a lot like the Fixed Scarlet but for a more reasonable price of $7,500... Yes $1,500 more than the old $6K, but still way better than anything Canon offers... and of course RAW, HDRx, touch focus, Redmote, etc.

BTW, I REALLY like your signature. If more Christians actually lived by a fireman's creed (which is borrowed from Jesus), I think the world would be a much better place and Christianity could actually make an impact rather than simply being an organization of power, greed and indulgence. That is what I hope to communicate in various ways if I ever own a Scarlet.

Thanks Andy... the 5K thing is and always was silly; you can't do 5K on a 2/3" sensor, and if you could it would make no sense for a pro camera; the photosite performance would be too limited, and the cost of the processing to handle the data would remain the same as EPIC-level electronics. And you can't do S35, 5K or not, for anything like the price points envisaged for Scarlet (sub $7k fixed, sub $4k removable for ballpark numbers). So the 3rd is going to be Scarlet Fixed, with tweaks as you discussed, or else something radical, with a different sensor size (?4/3?), ?a different fixed lens?, and a significantly higher price point something closer to 'EPIC-S Fixed', were such a beast to exist.

As for my .sig, thanks for the comment. The first part is from the Bible, but the complete quote is from Babylon 5 - google the phrase. It is kinda my credo as a fireman actually, yes. I'm not a Christian myself, but I respect all paths and those who follow them - and let these the be first and last comments on religion in this thread! :-)

Look last we heard it was around 6k mark. We heard this at the Sun Dance Film Festival. They have spec'd it out for us in interview after interview after interview. Lets stop bothering them with fantastic speculations. Wouldn't we much rather see footage? It's not going to be an Epic, its not going to be a Red One its going to be a Scarlet. It will be amazing, it will be fantastic and it will be at a price point most of us can afford. With that...I look forward to my studio visit and hopefully some new Scarlet footage. :)

I heard from source close to RED inner circle that it's 4K ±1K.
