  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet preview...

I have almost forgotten all about money for a Scarlet. After seeing some of the things coming out of the Epics I have been trying to figure out a way to scrape together 58k for an M.

At this point knowing that no matter what Scarlet won't cost more than that, or even an X for that matter, I am good.

I just wish that the S was shipping on the 3rd. Then I could get 2 and not settle for just one :)

It will be interesting to see who's willing to spend more than $6,000 on a camera with one and only one lens...Not many professionals, I think.

Really? How many thousands of fixed lens Sony, Panasonic, Canon prosumer camcorders do you think there are being used professionally every day for everything from ENG, to sports and event documentation to major reality TV series? A little fixed lens 2/3" Scarlet shooting footage that is competitive with high end codec 2/3" cameras costing 3 times it price would kill in this market. We are talking entry level pro cameras in 1/3" and 1/2" up to 2/3" between about $6k and $20k. Even when lenses are interchangeable in this level of camera, very few ever see use with anything but the package servo zoom that came with the camera so it may as well be fixed.

I honestly don't understand how this thread got so derailed.

I hope everyone is pleased with what happens on the 3rd.

If anyone wants a good laugh, shoot an iPhone 4S alongside a Canon 7D. Did this the other day... I'm still laughing at the 7D...

1080p is over. My frickin' iPhone shoots 1080p and resolves just as many lines as a Canon 7D, which is as much as many (and more than some) other DSLRs. Handles skew about as well, but over-compresses. Still shows less moire and chroma aliasing than a 7D...

Any "cinematographer" who chooses a 1080p camera camera at this time needs their head examined. There is no good reason, other than minimally-select artistic purposes, to do so. Tablets and compact notebooks/ultrabooks will all be greater than 1080p this next year. Consumer HDTV's are going quad-HD/4K, so are consumer projectors and desktop displays. It's only a matter of another year or two before 2/3" format "broadcast" cameras hit the quad-HD mark to keep up with the new displays and ATSC format standards.

YouTube supports frickin' 4K... Vimeo is working on it.

...And I have to wonder why I even posted this. This is the same damn argument I made when extolling the virtues of HD back in '99.

Here's a real kicker for all you 1080p evangelists.... 4K is just a stepping stone too. It will one day be replaced with something bigger and better. All the 1080p is "professional" or "good enough" crowd can go sit on the bench with the same jackasses who tried to tell everyone that 30MB hard drives were more than we'd ever need.

The Sony F3 S-log is giving you 1.92k out of every channel, so if you count all those pixels you're getting almost 6k. However, all Red cameras are much superior to the F3--better image quality, specs--and I suspect Scarlet will be the F3 killer. Easily.

He said professional CINEMA camera.

1080p isn't where that's at.

...shot 80 percent on Canon 5d mark 2 how is this not pro?????

If you want to point finger, it would do you good to get the facts straight.

You are pulling a quote from me totally out of context. Please don't do that.

In another discussion I claimed that the to be released Canon Hollywood camera might be an alternative to the Epic. Not as good, but also cheaper.

Rumor sites has this camera at at least S35 sensor, interchangeable lenses and high resolution up to maybe 4k.

Mark L Pederson protested that it could be an alternative to Epic, and said confidently that the new Canon will only be 1080p (contrary to rumors), and that that IN HIS OPINION isn't a professional digital cinema camera.

Josh Snyder then wrote something that implied that Mark had said the upcoming Canon won't be a professional camera, period.

I then advised Josh, that Mark and said professional CINEMA camera, assuming that Mark meant that if you launch a new camera late 2011 and call it Hollywood's new pet you want to aim for more than 1080p, since 1080p is not the format of choice for CINEMA going forward (isn't where it's at... in the close future).

That being put back into context, I can tell you that in my opinion the Canon 5D mkII CERTAINLY ISN'T a digital cinema camera. And if you want to shoot digital movies it is also my opinion that you want more than 2k.

Many films still seem to use 2k intermediates, but they would all have looked better in 4k. And the trend is clear.

Act of Valor is VERY untypical if 80% is correct. If they manage to shoot a movie on a 5D mkII, all the more cudos to them!

Chase Jarvis did a fashion model shoot on a iPhone 4 camera to make a statement about lighting, but that doesn't make the iPhone 4 a professional fashion camera.

I was somewhat thinking we'd see something similar to the camera Ted's been showing for a price similar to what Ted was suggesting, but after sifting through this thread, and Jim's OP, I no longer know what to think.

At least you know what not to expect... =)

...and that was the point of the thread.

Well, if they want to make that argument, then RED will never be as good as actual FILM. That's a fact. Film catches a wider light spectrum than RED. So if they want to be truly professional as they claim, they should be shooting with film and not Digital

Jim said the price has been increased as it was a professional camera. But increased from what? 3k for $3k? From the $4750 poster they made some two years ago? From the "roughly $6k" Ted showed us?

Also, I was under the impression Red considered Scarlet a professional camera for well over a year now, long before the working models we recently saw at various trade shows.

:confused1:

I don't understand why people are so pleased to see that it's going to be more expensive ... It seems that all RED USERS are rich or I'm not living in the same world ...
I may be be the only one to say that, I will probably get all the bad comments after that, but I'm pretty sad to see that price are being elevated ... pretty nice info indeed ....
Anyway let's see what's coming but I'm deeply sad to see that the SCARLET is more expensive again... I thought the dream was coming true... not this time for me
bye bye

Won't Prores die out now given Apple's approach with FCP in the pro world? I know I'm ditching FCP (already got me a copy of Avid MC). Why is prores the god of all codecs? Does it really need to be?

Apple did two things right with the 4444 ProRes variant that probably influenced Arri's choice. First, they made it work in RGB. Second, they made it 12 bits. And at 330Mb, the data rate is high enough to maintain the quality in a very artifact free way. So far there's really nothing out there that offers that combination - that is, until Avid's DNx 444 codec shows up later this week. My own feeling is that Avid has a good shot at recapturing some of that market if they play their cards right, and especially if they open up the 444 DNx codec as they have with the other variants. And the new, lower profile of Final Cut in the pro editing world doesn't hurt either.

I was wondering last night about how so much power at a low cost will affect the "indie" film scene... too much power too affordable? Who knows.
Sounds like good news to me, I'm more then stoked. It'll be like the HVX to the Varicam. Only way cooler.

Cant wait!!!

Jim said the price has been increased as it was a professional camera.
But he called Scarlet a strictly professional camera a year ago, when he officially redefined Red's target market. Of course, Scarlet was really always called a professional camera, but Jim's comments were intended to emphasize the quality of Red's products and their intended users and deemphasize price (meaning higher prices were reasonable to expect). We'll know in a few days how much more "professional" Scarlet will be.

Recorded in 4K and real-time edit proxy. I am very sure.

Actually, I was thinking more in terms of using a 4K capable camera, but recording HD - and only HD - directly. Could go both ways, though. I think you'll see both approaches in television work, depending on studio requirements.

My first priority is the RAW capability. Ideal if it's cheaper than F3 but even better if it's around the same price range of the FS100/AF100 :)

We all love film but with this new digital cameras (not only Red), if you know what you are doing, you can emulate the look of film quite easily. This is an article that says the producers of film cameras stopped the production. They are investing in digital technology. http://magazine.creativecow.net/article/film-fading-to-black
Red is one of the first pioneers in this new exciting era of cinema. Red technology is incredibly good and incredibly affordable, many professionals that shoot on film shoot also on Red, sorry but saying digital is not professional in 2011 is a bit passé.

Because for those of us hoping for an Epic-S, a higher priced Scarlet might mean we are getting exactly that. If that's the case, yes, yay for a higher price tag!

You're not alone Meddy. I think a lot of us are now more than a bit confused; wondering if on November 3rd we're going to be elated, or feel like we've had the rug pulled out from under us, and angrily walk away.

100 hours to go...
