  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet Predictions Revisited

Finding a new factory to make Scarlet is a setback. You have Taiwan, Singapore, South Korea, China and possibly Vietnam as likely locations. There may be credible manufacturing partners in India as well. The target retail price (which may have to change) will be a limiting factor. The target retail price effectively excludes the US and Japan. I think they'll settle in Taiwan-- just a hunch.

Yeah, send that order over to me, I'm 5 minutes from the HsinChu Science Industrial Park (home to Foxconn, and all the HiTech co's) and we'll gittem done fast! hahahahah!:devil:

Many people here seem to be operating under the assumption that the bug has held up production on the EPIC. But that may not be the case at all. It is an issue in the firmware. Production may still be going forward with the need to update the firmware before Tattoo deliveries can be made. It assuredly is holding up release, but not necessarily production. That means that the Tattoos could be flying out the door once they launch, and then what would the predictions be?

The bug and the loss of manufacturing partner are two separate problems that can be worked on concurrently. It is quite possible that by the time one is fixed, the other will also be resolved and overall delay might be quite minimal. But of course we simply do not know these things. We’ve been given a glimpse of what is causing delays, because RED is so up front, but none of us has the information required to start making predictions.

So my prediction is that it will be released when it is ready.:yikes:

You DO realize the Red One is a reality, right? That's a pretty good indication that the Epic and Scarlet will materialize.

Don't get your panties in a bunch. Keep in mind that when the R1 was released, it was in a class of it's own. Now, the big 3 (Panny, Sony, Canon) + Arri, Ikonskop, SI, etc.... have their own flavor of full frame sensors coming out. Red doesn't have a monopoly in this niche anymore. Even when Scarlet was just an idea a couple years back (and yes, we've been talking about this for years), Red was the only (affordable) game in town. Who knows if any of the new offerings may take scarlet out of the picture as being profitable. I have no doubt that the Epic will be made, well....eventually. My feeling, 12 months from now, scarlet will have missed it's window. I could be wrong, I hope I'm wrong but the market has changed since the R1 and that could change your "pretty good indication" theory substantially.

Oh, you are. There is no camera with these specs and for this price announced anywhere. Canon hasn't said a thing.

This is just whiny BS... sorry.

Joe Media (is that really your real name?) - One question... do you honestly believe, assuming you have read even a few of the things Jim Jannard has posted here, that he is going to walk away from the products he has promised? Change and improve them, certainly. But fold up his tent and go home? I think you are very seriously delusional!

Was I whining? You made my point better than I did. These are just "specs" with no deliverable at this point. Canon hasn't said a thing because Canon doesn't release any information before they can deliver. Believe what you want to. If you think that this camera will materialize this year, than more power to you. If you think that there will be no competition for this camera if/when it's released than buy it. I'm a realist...but maybe that's BS too.

You guys can get as pissed at me as you want. Prove me wrong.

Well, they annouced cameras that have inferior specs that are supposed to become available by the end of the year (maybe) and be more expensive. And as they won't release a product that is then obsolete after 3 month because they release a product that is comparable to Scarlet then, I don't think they are quite so close.
So, yes, BS.

I say the delays on Scarlet are a blessing in disguise for RED. Gives them the opportunity to respond to recent moves made by other camera manufacturers. I have complete confidence that when Scarlet does reach the marketplace, it will hands-down provide the best combination of quality, features and price.

I just hope RED can figure out how to carry their incredible customer service and support experience over to the mass market. Apple was only able to accomplish that via their local retail Apple locations.

What is the point of this thread? There are dozens just like this over the last few years. Until there are odds in Vegas on the release, this is just pointless noise (there aren't any odds on it yet, are there?).

It looks like the AF100, even with it's crappy codec and other inferiorities, may be the way I have to go to get out of the DLSR rut.

Scarlet will get here when it gets here. No sense in waiting around for it and making useless predictions though.

I have a question which may seem strange to most of you, but is selling products to some but not to others legal? Is it legal for a company to declare that it will only sell a product for a certain time period only to a certain "class", lets say "previous customers"? Doesn't that break some rule?

My prediction for mass produced Scarlet is March 2011. Two more months for some Epics, two months for some more, three months for some Scarlets, two more for mass production. That's on the optimistic side.

totally legal if not based in discrimination and its not ... not previous customers are not a protected class kind of like militaries not protected either

if they said no (insert ethnicity, religious, gender, age, handicap) that would be discrimination

My gut feeling tells me non-Red one owners will start getting their hands on Scarlet around August/September 2011.

As much as I've been patiently waiting for Scarlet all these years right now I'm more interested in what improvements the 5D mkiii will have and if Canon will release it late this year, as I still think the mkii has too many problems and limitations.

The perfect time for Scarlet to have come out would've been late 2009/early 2010, in my opinion.

It would've been the perfect spot to bridge the gap between camcorders and DSLRs we have today.

I'm with people who are frustrated that Scarlet hasn't come yet. I want it sooner too.

I don't understand people who think Scarlet "isn't revolutionary anymore" or "missed its window." Where are the other cameras or even camera announcements that shoot RAW? If competitors beat the resolution, the framerates, the whatever else, but use stupid-ass codec, Red's worth the wait. And in my opinion the competitors haven't yet gotten even THAT far!

I'm no Red fanboy/apologist. If Canon releases a camera that shoots 3K RAW (hell even 2K RAW) tomorrow at/under $4750, I'll buy it and forget about waiting another year for Scarlet.

That's not really accurate. The "prosumer" cameras that have been announced are all using some flavor of AVCHD (other than AVC-Intra) as a capture medium. And the Arri and SI models are much more expensive than the Red One. A Red One with a sensor upgrade is still the best deal going.

The Scarlet, though...this was supposed to be a commodity item with an extremely low price for entry. Remember it was originally billed as the "Red Pocket Professional" and the catchphrase was "3K for $3K."

What Red have always seemed to do is look down the road at something theoretically possible a year or two down the line and announce it as a product. The economic tailspin has fogged a lot of crystal balls, though. Nobody could predict exactly what was coming for a lot of Pacific rim supply lines.

Well, except Steve Jobs. Which, to digress for a moment, pretty much confirms that Jobs has industrial spies planted all over the place. Maybe if Jannard was more into the cloak-and-dagger stuff he'd have moved Scarlet production months ago, but he didn't.

The Scarlet is going to be delayed. There's pretty much no doubt about that. I'd guess that late 2011 is about right. I don't think the Scarlet project will be canceled because there's been so much interest in it. But I don't think we're going to see it nearly as soon as a lot of us hoped.

Sorry to go off topic, but the proposed codec in the AF100 is strong and also has HD-SDI out (ie, RAW 4:4:4)

I like the looks of it to tide me over until Scarlet s35 is launched (as I can start building up a nice collection of PL lenses to work on both).
