So I just placed my order yesterday for a Scarlet, which will be my very first camera. I went with the basic AL Canon mount collection along with a few extra redvolts and ssd cards. I was wondering if anyone recommends anything else for getting started.

cancel the redvolts, lose the sidehandle, and grab some red bricks and the dsmc belt clip. cheaper and longer lasting....split a 6 pack with some people, do a group buy...

You know the SSD's are coming down in price - you may want to hold on them and save some $$$ :)

Welcome to the Dark Side Adam!
Gads - you will be buried in advice here - all good tho. Lots of swag to choose from. Will be curious to see if you can make a pocket full of redvolts suffice. The attraction of light/portable weight is seductive, but reality bites in the power your little Leaf-Blower will demand! For many (me included) the v-mount rear bricks were the solution. Gobs more run time - I bought 3 150wt chinese* bricks for $260 a piece WITH chargers and a Wooden Camera V-plate. Li-Ion batteries are actually surprisingly light for the power they pack, and the camera balances out much better with stuff hanging off the back anyway.
Obv the RED accessories are glorious in their specs and quality but the secondary market has some viable alternatives - esp for us budget-minded Scarlet owners. I just HAD to have the RED top handle tho! ;)

Part of your parts-selection will be dictated by how you plan to use the camera. Run&Gun docos? studio ? Ah the joys of a box that is infinitely configurable!
Feel free to PM if you are interested in specifics of my kit...

*MOST of the V-bricks are chinese-sourced these days so no worries, and great value, esp if you shop around!

You might want to look at the Global media pro batteries as well. Save the cash from there and keep the side handle. From what I read all who use the side handle like it a lot.

The price just dropped on them. What makes you think the prices are coming down again any time soon? Just sayin'

I was going by Jarred's post below - and the fact that it's the 16th here (UK) and Adam's ordered today - presume he'll be paying pre drop prices.

Edit - ie 128GB SSD is currently $1800 in the store and will be (in a few short hours!) $1250 - so, depending on what he's ordering, there's a chance he could get another SSD almost for free (higher SSD's have a bigger discount). :001_smile:

I'd say the sidehandle is almost essential even if there won't be any redvolts in it. Navigating the menus and changing settings is much faster with it than with a touch screen, especially with some effort put into custom keymapping.

Thanks for all the great advice everyone. I was planning on getting some red bricks in the near future. I forgot about the price change in the SSDs. I asked to have those canceled and will reorder after price drop.

My good deed of the day is done!

You'll only have to wait a few hours (hopefully!).

Have fun!

Ah, sorry about that. I didn't realize they hadn't already dropped. Thanks for the info, Andy :)

I got bricks and a redmote, not the sidehandle. Don't regret it but will be buying the sidehandle as soon as I can.

If I am using a redvolt and brick at the same time can they be hot swapped?

Yes, that's entirely the point.

except many people have had issues, and have had to send their side handles in for "repair"

Hopefully RED has taken care of this issue with current builds of the hardware though.

Depending on your use, you might also want to consider a quad battery module for power, since those have been going for as low as $500 with the module adaptor included. With Redvolts you have the option of going really small profile and lightweight with just a volt in the handle and you can get some XLs for the quad module for when the camera needs to stay on for longer. I've been really happy with my quad module, as it also gives a bit more heft to the camera and moves the center of gravity back for more comfortable shooting with a shoulder rig. But then again, V-locks are much more multi-purpose.

second that the redvolts are pretty much useless in a real world situation you need like 8 plus 3-4 charges. I wish I would have went with the bricks out the gate. They are super light on the other hand so I guess its a ying yang ;)

Oh and consider grabbing the 512 over the other SSD's. It supposedly can handle higher data rates/less compression then the rest, and if you don't go with that now come dragon time your probably going to regret it...

If I can squeeze in some 512s I will.
