With news that Epic-M is now an orderable, purchasable product to anyone with the money... I got to wondering about a Scarlet-M (fixed).

I think the question has been asked to RED a few times with no significant reply... But out of interest, would any of you jump at the chance, and what prices would you look to pay to get a hand machined kit (similar, but perhaps lower spec'd than the Epic-M kit) and be ahead of the game?

Something like:

  • Scarlet-M Brain with fixed lens
  • 5" Touchscreen LCD
  • DSMC Side Handle
  • DSMC Side SSD Module
  • REDmote
  • 2x 128GB SSD cards
  • 2x REDVolt batteries and travel charger
  • Custom laser-cut foam Scarlet Pelican 1510 case
  • 2 years of warranty coverage

Haha.... I think $10k will be a stretch even when the production is rolling, but fingers crossed.

I'd imagine a Scarlet-M kit (as above) would be about $20k.... I'd sign up for it at such a price.

If the price premium over the published guesstimate price is proportionately similar to EPIC-M over X, and it got me a camera at least six months sooner, I'd give it serious consideration.

But please don't tell RED; I am getting an EPIC-X, but I also want a Scarlet Fixed (for ulltra light / extreme hazard type work) as soon as possible, as cheap as possible!

Yep.. same boat Mike... been tempted with Epic-M for some months now... but have found an extra reserve of patience. I think i'd have to jump onto Scarlet-M though... suits my needs so well and, like you, i'm all for getting it into extreme places... would be a good test.

I notice your R1 is named after everyone's favourite Volcano... have you been over? I've just been filming across the whole of Iceland for 4 weeks, what a place!

Yes Jim, I'm an Icelandophile, been over three times in the last year and shot (stills) the eruption last year; in fact it was shooting there that finally made me decide to take the plunge and move on from still work and become involved with RED!

And yes, I'm told I can pronounce it like a native :D

Mike

haha yea, we were gettin pretty good with the place names after a month... Such a great place, I'll be heading back for a 3rd visit whenever Epic/Scarlet arrives. Lake Myvatn awaits!

Any reason I would have for buying a Scarlet as opposed to buying an Epic would be nullified by the cost premium. The M program and the Scarlet program are essentially diametrically opposed ideas. It doesn't make sense.

The existing Scarlet will be in full production at a fraction of the cost before your proposed M could likely be built. That's not just a function of parts availability but also priorities and resource allocation at Red. (That is my perception, anyway.)

If you had a choice between the real Scarlet and your proposed M, which would you buy? While you are thinking about it, consider the likelihood that your cost guesstimate is fundamentally flawed. A hand built Scarlet with custom built parts would likely cost much, much more than 20k if I guess correctly. With the unique lens and all, it could even cost more than Epic M.

I'm tempted to keep coming back to this post and adding additional reasons why I think such a product will never happen. Each time I do it becomes clearer to me that the reasons are far too many to bother writing, since it is all guesswork anyway.

It seems your reserves have dried up and you have abandoned all reason for desperation. Hold it together for a few more months man! You can do it.

Yea, please we don't come back with more reasons, negativity is just a bit boring....

It was just a simple question that needed a simple answer from anyone who might like the idea of a Scarlet-M.

If a RED employee made your post... then fine and dandy, thread closed...move on.... but you are guessing just as much as me.

Remember, RED do have a working scarlet and I imagine "X" amount of lenses and parts could be produced (at a premium) to build a certain amount of Scarlet-Ms.

Hey, whatever passes the time for you... Knock yourself out.

For the record I have made far more hopeful, positive posts with regard to Scarlet than negative ones. Heck last Fall I was practically a cheerleader posting Scarlet will be here before the holidays 2010!

No, I'm not being negative. It's quite the opposite really. Fall will be here in three months and Scarlet maybe in four. That's a good thing.

I will only buy the interchangeable lenses version cause being stuff with 1 lenses to do indie feature film is not ideal. when the Scarlet interchangeable lenses will be out. now we will talk. I can't wait.

I think question of an M-version is moot. By the time they are ready to release it production won't be an issue. It was lens components that were holding them up so not likely anything that could be addressed with a preproduction model anyway.

I would love a possible M-version of the interchangeable model with a PL mount though.

Jim, it's a cool idea and there might be some receptive to it -- even at $20k, which I think is realistic. However, overall, part of the reason I believe Red went with the machined version of the Epic was to get cameras out into the wild ... advance the program ... and also to give customers an excellent option in light of the X delays. And with the outrageously good features -- the Epic could bear a higher price (still much cheaper than Alexa), and Red could at least break even or come close (as they have said, it's been a minimal profit on the M camera, and probably not even breaking even on M sales when you factor in the total cost of running the operation).

But now that production streamlined and part prices coming down, both the Epic AND Scarlet can be produced normally. There is less of a need, nor is the price probably worth doing a machined version -- of course only Red knows if that's the case.

Besides, how would they decide who gets one? The demand for Scarlet is huge and would always lag way behind what could be done in a machined basis. Maybe a random lottery so there was no bitching :)

Sorry if I'm sounding negative -- it's a cool idea and would have been perhaps more interesting had something like this been initiated concurrently at the beginning of the Epic-M program. But as of now, provided Scarlet production can begin before the end of the year ... I don't think this would happen.

Now if it was an option - would I drop $20k on the Scarlet-M package? Maybe. But then again, I'm conserving capital for a Stage 3 "X" package ... I could see a % of people being very interested in this.

A Scarlet-M program is most likely to late in the game. I believe the Scarlet is just around the corner. I can almost smell it, haha ;)

I got a desktop wallpaper here for you. Got it from Benoît-Joan some time ago. Keeps me focused, sharp and full of hope ;D haha!: http://imageshack.us/f/854/iwanttobelievescarlet.png/

As I remember when Scarlet was first announced, it was tagged as being "3K for 20K" :P

I'm kidding. But I actually do think a kit like the one you described would be quite a bit less. It was my understanding that Scarlet fixed was being advertised as a ready to shoot kit - brains, touchscreen, SSD module, etc. That was at $5,750 with HDRx. Throw in a price increase for the 5" over the 2.8" it was originally announced with, and you still be well below 10K, let alone 20K. I don't think the extras you mentioned would be an enormous additional expense. However...

I'm with you, mike, and a bunch of the other posters - if it meant getting one a few months earlier, yes, I would gladly pay the premium.

the biggest expense is machined parts and the camera being handbuilt, not to mention premium priced parts. not going to happen for $20k.

What will the final "Ready to shoot out of the box" package consist of? Also what will be the final price for the package?
•Scarlet-M Brain with fixed lens
•5" Touchscreen LCD
•DSMC Side Handle
•REDmote
•1x REDVolt batteries and travel charger

As for the extras, I believe that only things I will need right away would be the following:
•3x REDVolt batteries
•4x 32GB CF cards
•Red Station CF Module
•Custom laser-cut foam Scarlet Pelican 1510 case
•2 years of warranty coverage

the lens for the fixed model is the expensive part...

Count me in...
Don't think it will be happening, but yeah, if RED decides to create a M-bundle it will be worth the higher price, and i wouldn't be able to resist. :-)

Maybe they could sell a "build it yourself" Scarlet kit, with parts and instructions. That would be hilarious, however unlikely...
