Scarlet is coming and can ya tell us now... there were statements about an SSD-CF adapter for people who don't want to spend more than the cost of the camera on storage media, at first anyway

Can you confirm if that's still the plan and if said adapter will be available in quantity immediately when Scarlet starts shipping, or will it be SSD or nothing at least initially? If it's the latter I need to know, and order SSD! I know *everything* to do with Scarlet is probably embargoed, but maybe you could let the kimono slip that much to help us out...

Thanks guys

Mike

It would for sure be helpful to know something like that even as far as RedVolt's and SSD's go. I'm sure they'll have a good stock for the packages, but my concern lie with needing extra accesories beyond the package depending on your shooting environment. IE 4 redvots and 2 SSD's if that were a package may not be enough. Not only do you have the Epic Crowd loading up, you also have the Scarlet crowd loading up as well. How long will it be until you can realistically shoot in full scale?

They said it themselves they'll be back ordered for awhile. Maybe forever. My fear is not being able to afford the camera itself if I buy some things now. Not because I buy them just because the camera is out of my price range...That is where I'd like a bone before what's coming to just give us a price range on what everything will fit between.

I would assume the way Scarlet will launch will be similar to epic-m... a ready to shoot package (aside from lenses, if the fixed is not on the table) including a set amount of media/power. I'd also assume that the package may be a little lighter to bring down the price? My best bet would be to hold off purchasing anything until it is known what will come with the first released Scarlet.

Haven't we had enough Scarlet leaks over the years? Me thinks Jim is going to hold off on cam specifics until N3

I agree. They are most likely not going to give out anything more till then.

Mike - can't help but see this as a request to pre-empt the announcement with a pre-announcement, which would upstage the real announcement. I thought that was what November 3rd was for.

If Canon releasing 4K camera for 15 Bucks than the thing is getting pretty serious.

That means probably that RED have to taylor a high speed (120fps or even 300fps) to 4K Scarlet just to get more

attractive product in that market than new Canon that supposed to be get maximum speed at 60p.

But that's my latest RED User speculation and nothing more...

go ahead and get the ssd's mike. i wouldn't count on the cf cards. they are priced similarly per gb anyways (except all the used ones floating around). in any case, chill out for 3 more weeks, i wouldn't count on any information about scarlet until then, and i certainly wouldn't be asking for any.

If there is anything good about RED... it is the core belief that 1080P (or 2K) is not a reasonable replacement for film. We started our business based on this belief. Finally, it seems like others have finally agreed. No matter what happens going forward, our success and legacy will be based on this simple thought. 1080P is not good enough. 4K delivery is.

From RED's owner himself. 4K, nothing less from RED. Their legacy will be based on that. 4K Scarlet it will be then!

There is this strange belief that I, as well as many here have.

That if we keep showing up, asking questions, making suggestions and inquiries it will some how speed up the time and Nov 3rd will come sooner! The strange things is that even though we know its not true, we keep doing it.

Myself included!! Its Crazy!!!

I vote for going with the SSD's, its full proof. Its a can't lose investment.

And guess what...all this typing and its still not Nov 3rd yet!

Is it 3K? 4K? $10K? $5K? We'll see! Good Stuff!

You gotta love our excitement! Honestly how often do grown men anticipate this much! Its fun!

And you just join the ride a few months ago, many of us have been here for 3 years waiting. Nov 3 seems like nothing compared. Let us see what is finally inside the box.

I know it may not be the answer you want to hear, Mike, so don't bite my head off. I would suggest sticking with the media that you have and then plunking down the extra cash once the specs are released. If you have a shoot and you need SSDs, I'm sure someone here on Redforums would rent out some redmags for you in the meantime.

Is two weeks going to make a difference?

If a product has been in the works for years and is ready, then announcing today or in two weeks can't possibly make that much of a difference, it just makes a better story to announce on the date that Canon set. Either company could spill the beans early, but there's a big game of high stakes poker going on here.

What if Canon moved up their announcement?

But it certainly makes it fun to watch and speculate.

:)

Mike,
Trends:
Red raid - EOL
Red ram - EOL
8gb cf. - EOL
16gb cf - price dropped to 300.00
32gb - were no longer being developed

SSD media is a pretty good bet for recording r3d on an EPIC or any future cams.

Cost questions:

Look at the cost of:

Panasonic p2 (at product launch)
Sony SxS media

Canon might look to put a crappy codec on CF to tell users they can keep media costs down. I don't think RED would do this because they are in the quality business.

David.

I truly hope to see the SSD/CF adapter, or better yet, the side CF module itself as an option for Scarlet. The cost for SSD/Redmag media is just too far of a leap for me, at least initially... I really hope this is possible.
