So we just got a Scarlet at work and have been shooting a little and everything we shoot seems really noisy. We are still new to using this camera but even shooting at 800 iso our blacks still have a lot of noise. We shot a sequence in a hallway with huge floor to ceiling windows and still came out noisy.

It would be great to hear what settings others are shooting with too. Any advice??

Kinda hard to know without seeing an R3D.

Have you performed a black shade once the camera has warmed up? (Preferably after 20-30 minutes of being on)
Did you expose properly? Did you process the footage properly? What did your goal posts look like? (Was there noise being detected by the goal posts?) If so then in RCX-Pro you need to bring your blacks down to proper levels otherwise you are effectively boosting the noise in those areas that didn't have proper exposure to begin with. If you can post an R3D grab we could answer your question better.

Ok. Black shading. Good to know.

How about this. Camera out of the box, what should we do first? Settings? What should black shading be at?

You should put it next to you - power it up and read through all the basic stuff here - http://www.red.com/learn/red-101

Learn the way the camera works and you'll then start to feel your way through it :)

Have fun.

Andy is right. Start there. It took me a few months to really develop an understanding and connection with this cameras personality. Now I know exactly what she likes and what she doesn't. Also, expose with your goal posts, and pay less attention to the histogram. this will give you the most flexibility in post. The sensor also doesn't really like tungsten light, so light closer to 5600K or filter your lens.
