Just finished a one day shoot yesterday for MUSE (http://www.muse.mu). Wanted to post some pre color screen grabs and will update with new posts along the way. Shot this mostly at 48fps, with Super Speeds (namely the 18mm) and the Bright Tangerine Strummer matte box. I love the softer look of the super speeds. I rated the Scarlet at 500ISO for this shoot as I mainly used tungsten lighting. I'm limited in what shots I can post at this point, but will update with more once the project nears completion. Tons of interactive lighting on this shoot. Feel free to ask me any questions. Sorry for the short intro but I need to get some sleep. Will update this post later.

I have been a huge fan of Muse since '94, before anyone in the US knew them, so I'm jealous. ;-)

Why'd you shoot at 48fps rather than 24 (23.98)? Did you shoot 4k HD?

Can't wait to see this and hear their new album. They sure love the space theme...they've done that on other videos in the past.

Thanks for sharing.

Kevin

We shot 48fps due to the fact that most of the video is played out in slow motion (time base was always 23.98), but also because there are several speed ramps from slow motion to normal, then back. Resolution wasn't a concern as the tour screens are slightly under 720p and web delivery will be 1080p. I shot it in 4k with 16x9 guides and 3k with 16x9 guides and kept the action between the guides. This will give the vfx company a bit of room to stabilize and reframe if need be.

The Muse shoot from last week with Dom I shot on the Epic in 5K in 24fps 2:1 (16x9 guides), 48fps, and 96fps. That was a ninja video in the style of Kill Bill, but again, plenty of speed ramps and slow motion shots, thus the frame rate choices. Luckily with the Epic I was able to stay in 5K the whole time.

Here's the intro shot to the Uprising Ninja Visuals:

And here's the view from Dom's pov inside the pyramid for the Uprising Ninja Video:

At the end of the video the pyramid inverts again and reveals Dom in his Ninja suit playing the drums:

And the Album trailer I shot (albeit not on RED unfortunately): This also serves as the intro to the show.

The new album is incredible :sifone: It definitely is a variety of musical style but extremely epic. This is my favorite album to date.

That space set looks amazing. I'm actually excited to see how this turns out after post. Awesome stuff.

Thanks Mike,
I'm excited to see the finished product as well. As for the set, it looks terrible in person but incredible on camera. When we location scouted I was trying to figure out how to light it to hide how janky the set is.

Exciting thread! I can't wait to see more.

And +1 on that space set. The lighting really makes it pop!

Looks great! We just shot at LC studio 2 weeks ago on the same set, it's amazing how with good lighting you can make that wooden mess come to life.

Thanks Aaron,
haha if you can even call it wood. More like cardboard and plastic. Roof panels falling off, floor panels weak or broken, walls you can shake by looking at them, and yet it can still look great.

Talking about your first post: Incredible setting and natural lighting. As for the set's lighting I'm speechless. It might be simple however I see that you should have had no problems keying that green out at the post, have you?

I rated the Scarlet at 500ISO for this shoot as I mainly used tungsten lighting.
Admitting to my ignorance here: how does rating at xISO help when shooting tungsten? The sensor is still starved for blue, right?

It forces me to open up a bit more than at 800 thus reducing noise in the low end. The more light you give the sensor, the less noise even under tungsten. Ill post an R3D grab later, as there is virtually no noise. I mixed a couple daylight kino tubes throughout the set as well, such as in the cockpit under the console, in the hallway on the wall, and in the observation deck under the console. So there is a little help there as well.

Thank you,
No problems with a key.

Being a fan of both Muse and RED, this is a nice thread to see popping up.
BTW, I also have tickets for Muse's (to my knowledge) last concert of the tour in Brussels Belgium. It will be the first time that I'll see them live, so I'll probably see this imagery on the big screen :)
Very curious to their new album. I already loved their song for the Olympic Games, Survival.

Nice atmosphere and nice lighting.. Reminds me a lot of the original Alien in production design.
The shot of the guy with the joystick is very cinematic.

Please keep us updated, would be interested in seeing more!

Thanks for sharing Matt.
The sets and lighting look fantastic. Also, Muse is one of my favorite bands, so I am insanely jealous.

It sounds like their video is in the good hands.

Yes you will see both of these videos at the concert on the big screens. The Ninja video is what will be playing during Uprising, and the space one during one of their new songs. Should also be shooting a few music video's for them soon as well (on RED).
