  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet Fixed lens on Scarlet Interchangeable?

If that's correct I would need a 3K quality wide adapter that would give a factor of 0.5 or 0.6 times to fully replace my DSLR. The 0.8 Schneider that was mentioned would help but wouldn't really cut it.

So I may have some searching to do.

Mike

I think this is one of the interesting expectations that people have. A 2/3" camera, pretty much inherently, will be limited in comparison to a FF35 DSLR in terms of composure options (FOV, DOF manipulation, etc).

Trying to make it work the same, I think, is something of a mistake. A better option is usually to try to learn a slightly different shooting style that will allow you to achieve similar results.

I take your point, and I'm prepared for the differences; I'll adapt. But FOV is pretty fundamental; you either can get wide enough, or you have to stitch multiple shots together.

Don't forget the concept we're being sold by RED is 'DSMC'. It's intended to function as a professional still camera too. The question then becomes: which still camera? Obviously a DSLR, because it's too big by far to replace something like a Leica, and doesn't have the IQ to replace MF.

I guess I'm just wanting the best of all worlds; the bargain-price-with-top-notch-quality of the fixed lens, but trying to avoid carrying the DSLR too, and trying to avoid shelling out a fortune for good glass to use with the interchangeable Scarlet.

Ahhh well you're right; I'll have to keep reminding myself I'm buying Scarlet fixed as a 'trainer' RED until the FF35 comes out...

And I think you've made an important point here - what role does Scarlet play in the DSMC game, especially in comparison to Professional Stills Cameras?

I really think it is defining a new place and, more than likely, won't appeal to professionals who need the FOV and IQ offered by FF35 and/or MF for their professional work. Shooting interior architecture on a 2/3" sensor, for instance, could require something stupid, like a 1.8mm lens. Likewise with landscapes and vistas.

In such a profession, I'd probably be hard-pressed to use any of the DSMC cameras. I don't regularly need high frame-rates to capture an instant in time less than say, a couple of seconds, I wouldn't be recording motion for anything, and, as you said, the FOV just isn't there compared to wider formats. Now, if I were an action, event, fashion, or sports photographer...I think DSMC starts making more sense. I wouldn't usually need extremely wide FOV, and the benefit of shooting way more than 12fps or so could pay off in capturing just the right moment.

I think there are probably a lot of photographers who are impressed by what RED is doing with 2/3" and S35, but aren't yet seeing it as a practical tool for them. Based on what Jim said in his post today, though, I think that will change with Monstro - FF35, 645, and 617. Lovely.

The DSMC moniker doesn't imply fitness for a particular use. But I think Scarlet will serve me fairly well for both roles as a hobby camera. Though I do have a fondness for medium format for stills. A 645 would be awesome for $6k!

Sorry for the OFF guys but could somebody post me that scarlet still where is on a woman on a sofa? I have been searching that for a long time, but i can't find. I think that was the first still from the scarlet what we get here on reduser. (Felix was the second one). Please post me that still. Thank you very much!

1.8mm would be stupid, yes... that would be some kind of fisheye. My very rough and ready reckoner is 15/10/5. By which I mean 15mm on FF35 = 10mm on S35 = 5mm on 2/3", which all equal very approximately 100º FOV, which is as wide as I need to go! :-)

(ok ok it's more like 4mm at the 2/3 end but close enough for government work)

I have a 3.5mm Century fisheye I'm looking forward to trying out on Scarlet.
It is nice to have very comprehensive coverage of focal lengths, but I would say 5-6mm range is plenty wide on 2/3". I tend to shoot more in what would be considered "portrait" focal lengths, around 25mm on a 16mm film camera.

[QUOTE RED has said it does not plan on making an interchangeable version.

When has red said that they are not going to release an interchangeable version

The 8x fixed zoom is actually deeply integrated into the fixed Scarlet brain so RED has said it does not plan on making an interchangeable version. People in the know say the lens alone is worth more than $6,000 so just consider the fixed an amazing electric zoom with a free Scarlet brain attached to the back.

When red announced they are not going to release the interchangeable version. Thanks

Just to clarify, Red is making an interchangeable lens version of the Scarlet brain, designated the Cinema model.
They are at this point not making a version of the 8x zoom to fit it. They are making a package of mini-primes and it will accept the full range of Red's interchangeable lens mounts for other lenses.

Seems like a mix-up in reference here? Based on everything they have said, RED is definitely going to make an interchangeable lens version of the Scarlet camera. What they don't seem to have any plans for, is creating a standalone lens like the one that is embedded into the Fixed Scarlet. Does that help clarify things?

EDIT: David, you beat me to it.

Seems like we often think alike.

That's clear for me. Thanks Terry
