  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet -- Final predictions!

I'm going to go out on a limb and predict:

1) 4K Mysterium sensor, same as RED ONE
2) Fixed 18-50 zoom lens, all manual (no servos or auto-focus, etc.)
3) Body the size of an HV20, plus lens
4) Records REDCODE RAW only to CF cards (30p max)
5) Two XLR inputs (no built-in microphone)
6) HDMI preview out (no HD-SDI or BNC)
7) Built-in flip out LCD, no EVF option
8) Weight: 7 lbs. (3.18 kg)
9) $9000

Flame retardant suit on. :)

He never said it was a pro-sumer camera. He never said either that it was an hvx size camera. He said it was a POCKET (seriously, a pocket camera, people, it can't have the redone's features on it or it would have to have a illogically efficient colling system, and he said it wasn't a mini red) PROFESSIONAL (Not pro-sumer, but sometimes the two are interchangeable) camera. It has to have realistic specs, and be very small. And I can't see something so tiny being uber-expensive. It would have to be made of gold to justify a 10k or near price tag. To tell the truth, pocket professional sounds like a bit of an oxymoron. Professional implies higher than average price, but pocket implies closer to consumer needs, and certainly not justifiable at a high price. I wonder how they'll pull this off.

Yes, this is why I went with the configuration I posted. It leans towards "pocket" while still retaining the pluses of the Red One. It's going to be small. They used the word pocket, not compact. Heck the Hv20 isn't even all that pocketable.

Remember, if you put a larger sensor in the HV20, ripped out the tape mechanism in favor solid-state, and put full manual controls you could have a pocket Red on your hands.

Anyway, make your prediction John! This thread is about looking in the crystal ball and making a "best guess" at what we'll see on the 14th.

how big a pocket? are we talking big baggy cargo pants or what. There is no way this camera is really gonna fit in an average pocket. It's a 2K super 16 with a PL mount. the diameter will be at least the size of the front of a red 1.

If it is to fit comfortably in the very deep pockets of its creator then it will be a humongous Pocket Camera!

This seems like a lot more realistic guess to me. All pretty much things that red has already done the R&D for. Still seems like it may be to close of a competetor for the red though which is something red said scarlet would never be.

Well 2K, no SDI out, no interchangeable mounts, no red drive and no PL mount would not be a competitor. Thats like saying the DVX is a competitor to the HVX (yet thats a closer comp).

Here's my final prediction...

Y'all are WRONG!!!

I'd be happy if it has no lens at all,.. just an appropriate mount ;).

S16 sensor - yea. 3K, so -> 2K clean debayered.

1-60fps varispeed - yea.

Redcode - yea.

Minimum In-camera messing around - nice.

CF - you bet.

Audio - I don't care [MicroTrack].

Small - pocket -> nice.

Under 10k$ - please, easy on my pocket.

;).

Guys, please, I want to see a zillion photos, posts and video clips from this happening.

Especially of the Big Three Red Things.

Have Fun and share the moment [in digital form].

:).

My predictions:

4/3 rds format lenses, Auto Focus and Exposure modes possible ( some interesting options in this format )
ND filter wheel
3k active area with a bit of overscan
Red Code to CF
Kind of big to be called "Pocket" Like a HVX once you put the lens on.
$5-8k. Serious Camera, complements R1.
Hopefully good ergonomics.

hehehe u guys r completly wrong scarlet is morethan that u will be shocked am sure hehehe (am i right jimm?)lol

Here's a repost of a post I made January 17, 2007:
http://www.reduser.net/forum/showpost.php?p=5543&postcount=24

I'm sure I'll be flamed for this but I should mention that for every person who wants an optical viewfinder, mechanical shutter "Red Two", there are probably several people willing to pay for a "Red Half" - eg
- half the number of pixels (eg approx 3k image - 3100x1800 or so)
- half the audio channels (2)
- half the outputs (just HDMI, Firewire, e-SATA)
- half the price ($8750)
- except keep the same 720P viewfinder

You could also use the Red Half to film the behind-the-scenes footage for your Red One shoot ;)

Seriously, I think we will find the Red to be more than enough camera for 99% of indie film work and most studio stuff too. I know it's like the deal of the century already but the only problem remains price. Guess I'll have to wait 3 years for used Red Ones to start coming on sale...

So my update predictions (basically agreeing with everyone else) are:

If 2K fixed lens, under $3000
If 2K interchangeable lens, under $4000
If 3K or 4K (fixed lens or not), under $8,000

- RedCode CF recording
- 2 channels audio
- has TC connectors
- can easily sync two cameras to record 3D

Otherwise it is not competitive with 3CCD 1.9K EX1 ($6500 INCLUDING two 8GB cards), which is a shipping camera, while Scarlet is not.

If it's something else (high-end lipstick camera, etc) then hopefully Red will look at this page (and all the others like it ;) and design something. Filter wheel is a great suggestion.

I like this list, and also agree an ND filter wheel would be great. And I would have no problem with Scarlet being the size of an HVX, once the lens is on.

Is there a specific date for a press conference with information about the cam?

...I would have no problem with Scarlet being the size of an HVX, once the lens is on.

HVX with lens is about 2/3rds the size of a modestly outfitted Red One... how does that fit anyone's definition of "pocket"?
