Ok, we're just about one week out from the big show. So now it's time for this one last poll. Here's how it will work. Instead of stating what you WANT Scarlet to be, we're going to go with what you think Scarlet WILL be. And as an added bonus, throw in the PRICE you think it will sell at. Yes, it's all speculation, but hey we've been doing that for months now anyway.

Here's my guess...

Sensor: 2K CMOS - Super 16 size
Size: HV20-ish in size (including lens)
Lens: Fixed zoom with manual focus and exposure controls (may not on the lens itself)
Recording: RedCode RAW to CF cards
Viewfinder: LCD on body and/or EVF
Framerate: Variable up to 60P (including 24P of course)
Audio: 24-bit - XLR input
Cost: $4999

He who is closest gets a cookie! Or maybe a ticket to the front of the Scarlet reservation line? Jim?

Addendum: Remember the point of this thread is to PREDICT. Its fine to debate as well, but don't forget your predictions!

Boz, It sounds about right, the only thing is it should be a little bigger than the HV20. It should be the size and build of say a Nikon 40x, narrower and elongated towards the back.

I hope you're wrong about the chip being 2K. I hope it's 3.2K or so (6 MP overall) for shooting at 2K (remember, the 4K Mysterium is a 12-MP chip, but it's reportedly roughly equivalent to 2.4-2.5K when the image is de-Bayered). I fear that a S16-sized zoom, even a relatively short one, would be pretty big, wouldn't it? And if it's short and nonremovable, that could diminish the camera's appeal. The rest sounds reasonable, though, except maybe two XLRs instead of one.

All very good points, Tzedekh. I'm just posting my 'best guess' at what I think Scarlet will be. Join in the fun and post your own. After, that's the point of this little thread. :)

Ten Thousand

Ten Thousand

I think it will be closer to $10,000. $7000 Lowest Which would be fine because you want Quality first.

I think the Scarlet camera will be the worlds first open-source, DIY cinema camera. You'll receive the parts in a bag and have to solder everything together yourself. RED will provide the (open source) software for it and you'll buy software updates from them.

The "pocket" analogy here being that the money to build this will come out of your own pocket.

Oh well - the thought was funny to play with :-D

Still camera with PL mount that has a sensor the same dimensions as the red 1. It can be used as a directors finder with your PL glass and can take quick still shots of locations to color grade and get ideas of how the shot will look.

:meh:

What happened to 4K and interchangeable lenses (so you can put pocket lenses!)?

Ok, I kid...

Those are some pretty nice guesses, I'd have said the same.

Red does not have the manufacturing ability to build a camera with a small fixed lens. Anything like a HV20, HVX or EX1 is way beyond reds ability to build for anywhere close to the same price point of those cameras.

Get real people! The red 18-50 zoom costs the same or more then a HVX or EX1. Red just does not have the experience base to build that kind of camera. There is a ton of R&D that goes into the features needed on a HVX or EX1. All of which is a bunch of R&D that red did not do with the red1. Red one actually has very basic to no features similair to a HVX or EX1. The red one is simply a great sensor with the ability to compress the footage and record on to flash or hard drives. No where in that process is built zoom servo's, auto iris, small lenses and multiple other features.

Jim saw a window of opportunity to build a high end camera that would compete with other high end cameras and beat them in price because they do not have to build all the auto features that are not used at that level. The high end sony, panasonic, viper and other digital cameras are very expensive for 2 main reasons. 1: they are built in small quantities and 2: Customers have paid a lot. I feel it will be totally impossible for red to build a camera that will beat out the HVX or EX1 in a features to price battle. Sony, cannon and panasonic just have way to much experience in that ring.

I see lots of tearing down my prediction. But its JUST my prediction. I certainly don't expect everyone to agree with it. That's not why I posted it. I'd like to see those who disagree with my prediction post their own. Then on the 14th we'll see who was closest.

Gonna go way out with this:

Hv20 size - basically any size that fits in jacket pocket without lens

lens not supplied

Frame rates: Film motion/video/still

Modified Mysterium intentionally crippled to 2k crop and under for motion but in still mode 12 megapix.

Choice of Canon or Nikon mount

Amazing slow motion options depending on settings

compact flash recording

Quality focusable lcd only

Graemes magic focus, histogram, exposure settings lcd settable

All metal body helps in heat dissipation

mini bnc audio connector

Lens: Fixed zoom with manual focus and exposure controls

Just to clarifiy. When I say manual focus and exposure controls I don't necessarily mean on the lens itself. Manual focus maybe, but i'm thinking exposure conrols will probably be menu driven.

This seems like a lot more realistic guess to me. All pretty much things that red has already done the R&D for. Still seems like it may be to close of a competetor for the red though which is something red said scarlet would never be.

Fightfordie stole my thunder. I believe it will use still lenses. Maybe it will have a Birger mount built in. 2K REDCODE RAW to Solid state media. It will do up to 120fps and also be a pretty good still camera. Built-in integration with FCP in Log and Transfer window. The camera will be black, not RED/Scarlet.

Depending on the price, I'd be down with that. Do you have a price prediction to go along with that?

Yet we get statements like this from Jim...

All I can say sounds like hype... like when we first announced the RED ONE and everyone here (DVXUSER) said we were a scam... :-)

You will not be disappointed if you come to our booth. No matter what you think you will see, you will be blown away. I'll eat my cigar.

and...

no matter what you think Scarlet might be, you WILL be surprised.

I'm sorry, but those are some BOLD statements. If Red can't compete with Sony, Canon, and Panasonic in a features to price battle, how is the Scarlet going to 'blow us away'? My guess would at least do that. Heh.

Anyway, I urge you to post your own prediction. That's what this thread is supposed to be about. Not tearing down each other's predictions, but just seeing who comes closest.

Great spec. At $5000 - $6000 I'd buy 4 for multi cam shoots and load them up with Canon L glass. Only cost 1-2 days of an O/B crew anyway...

Well the idea of shooting/focusing/exposing/operating pro film projects on such a small form factor with still lenses is nowhere near what the REd one can do.

Body might be possibly and intentionally crippled to only accept canon or nikon not pl.

Small form factor might not give you 120fps in 2k mode because of heat. So the higher the frame rate the lower the res.

Regarding price and knowing REd is all about price. I say the price will be as revolutionary as the RED one. The canon eos-1ds Mark lll is a 21megapix cam for $8000. I predict red pocket professional as 12megapix still cam so I will go with the older 10 megapix EOS 1d mark lll price of between $3800-$4500 price range without lens. Add a nice zoom for a grand or less and you're cheaper than HVX/ EX1 which seems to be the way Red operates just like the RED one has done price performance wise.

He never said it was a pro-sumer camera. He never said either that it was an hvx size camera. He said it was a POCKET (seriously, a pocket camera, people, it can't have the redone's features on it or it would have to have a illogically efficient colling system, and he said it wasn't a mini red) PROFESSIONAL (Not pro-sumer, but sometimes the two are interchangeable) camera. It has to have realistic specs, and be very small. And I can't see something so tiny being uber-expensive. It would have to be made of gold to justify a 10k or near price tag. To tell the truth, pocket professional sounds like a bit of an oxymoron. Professional implies higher than average price, but pocket implies closer to consumer needs, and certainly not justifiable at a high price. I wonder how they'll pull this off.
