  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet ETA

What?

What?

Am I the only one who saw "a burst rate up to 120fps" for 3K Scarlet? Wasn't it supposed to do up to 120 fps continuously, with a maximum burst rate of 150 fps?

I just read that too. That's not true is it? Please tell us that's a typo. What is the new max continuous rate?

I guess "early 2011" is good news.

Hopefully a lot of this is a new redattude of under promise and over deliver.

Hey.. also in the new web site it looks like Epic is about the same physical size as Scarlet. Does that make Epic a 'pocket camera' as well? Just wondering, if money was no object could an Epic can be configured to be the same size as a Scarlet?

Scarlet ETA? After I buy a 7D but before any other professional camera comes out with anywhere close to the Scarlet's capabilities/pricepoint. Keep on working until then with what's available, and keep working up to the professional tools that will make the job much, much easier to do.

The delay has caused the components of my future editing system to come down more than the price increase for HDRx-enabled Scarlet:
1) High-end I7 chip (950) down 50%
2) NVIDIA GeForce GTX 465 (for CUDA) down 50%
3) 4X2TB Green hard disks for RAID 5 down 30% (no reduction on StarTech enclosure/controller)
4) 6 GB (3X2) memory modules down 30%
5) 64 GB SSD system drive down 30%
6) Lite-On 10X BluRay burner down 40%

well, by the time you'll get the camera, you might have new stronger hardware on the market ;)

I think it is probably just a typo. Deanan mentioned in one of these threads that they were testing at 150 fps already.

Scarlet brains are narrower than the EPIC brains, but due to the lens, the Fixed Scarlet is longer than the EPIC.

I think we might see that change with the HDRx feature added to Scarlet, since it requires some more hardware to accomplish this performance.

Downside - Wider, heavier
Upside - No $300 step-down "Module Adapter"

Since there's both a Epic Rear Module Adapter and a Scarlet Module Adapter I don't see that happening.

Scarlet is getting another board for HDRx, but I think this photo was taken before they added a bit of length to the EPIC, likely for cooling reasons. So the finished versions of both cameras could be a little bit longer.

HIGH-larious! This post reminded me that I upgraded my G5 to an Intel Mac so very long ago (2x2.8 quad core xeon) because I wanted to have the power to handle pro-res and my new red footage.

I've already been considering updating again since this mac pro is now fairly old.

SO on the frame rate issue.. we think that it depends on the frame size? I guess that makes since because of bandwidth, but I was given the impression before that it could do 120 at 3k. (things change I know I know) I guess if this new info is the case you'd shoot 24 at 3k, and lower to 2k for higher fps effects shots?

It was hardly an impression. Since spring 2008, Red has said 2/3-inch Scarlet could run at 3K at up to 120 fps. Recently, Deanan DaSilva mentioned that Scarlet would run up to 150 fps at 3K and was being tested at higher speeds at 2K. It now appears that "a burst rate up to 120fps" was a misstatement on the Red site, because it has been changed to "a frame rate of 1-120fps (higher burst rate)."

"Early 2011" Milan.

That could mean anywhere from January to May. A lot of people will probably bet that it'll launch come NAB but i think it could be sooner/later. They'll ship it asap rather than wait for an industry showcase. Everyone's already aware of the Scarlet, they don't need a trade show to launch :)

lets hope you r right with the date.I think it will be out in the end of 2011.

I'm so glad that the AF100 is coming out in a couple of months.

Because it seems that the wait for Scarlet S35 is going to be excruciating.

I think at this point it's pretty safe to say it's already a 2012 camera.

Not necessarily. I think it's reasonable to believe that once they get HDRx working optimally on Epic and Scarlet 3K, Red will implement it quickly on the S35, which is, in a way, a reduced-capability Epic. If Scarlet 3K ships by March or April 2011, I expect Scarlet S35 to ship by summer.

I might be wrong, but judging from the Mysterium X Upgrade Program and etc, I don't think RED has the infrastructure to release these camera so close together.

I mean, even Panasonic doesn't do something like this.
