Any word on a release date? I've skimmed through several threads and don't seem to be able to come up with an answer.

Is RED still aiming for a 2010 release or has it slipped in to 2011?

Maybe we can have moderator only sticky thread that is updated with the latest anticipated date, so regulars don't have to wade through hundreds of posts to find the current status?

Thanks

The best thing to do is just keep an eye on the recon threads. Any announcements will be made through there. On Scarletuser there are stickies that get updated with 'everything we know' which is handy.

Nice name by the way...a la 'The Third Man' such a great film...

I'm planning to buy a Panasonic AF-100.

If by any chance RED is planning a Scarlet release early next year, it would be really cool if they could give at least an indication.

I could wait 4 or 5 months for Scarlet.

I would be happy and think it's a fair guess that we will have Scarlet by next summer. It sounds like Epic is already out there with very select filmmakers shooting (Fincher, etc.) so I agree with Stephen that it might just sneak into release by the end of the year.

Pure speculation of course.

My utterly pure speculation is that RED issues a "big announcement" shortly before the AF100 starts shipping, with a new promised ship date of NAB. This way they can try to keep some guys from running out and buying AF100's.

RED is not in the least bit concerned about people "running out and buying AF100's". Scarlet is a gift not a hedge.

That's what users and RED said 2 summers ago.

Optimism is a beautiful thing.

All anyone can do at this point is hope, what we do know, is that it will be released at some point and it will absolutely amazing value once it does. I have complete confidence in Red.

That's because a lot of us will be selling them for Scarlets when the time comes. :emote_happyhappy:

hehe il be buying an af-100 as well. but the day scarlet comes out.... goodbye af-100. to me it seems the af100 is a big enough jump ahead of the other cameras out there its worth a look. everything else feels like a dinosaur.

I would be happy to own it in the next 6 months, but that seems a bit too wishful, which is frustrating but well worth the delay/wait.
The new features are pretty insane, so I'm happy to wait it out..

That would be a pretty wise move from RED and would keep a lot of people (including me) from buying an AF100.

That is of course, if Scarlet S35 is also given a release date.

I'm not sure I'd favor Scarlet 2/3 fixed over the AF100 for a lot of lower end jobs and commercials. Clients are growing used to the shallow DOF aesthetic, it will be hard going back.

The real bargain of Scarlet 2/3 fixed is the lens.

I'd say that Scarlet 2/3 fixed with HDR is going to be the dream camera for documentaries.

I'm sure you'll find Scarlet 2/3's higher frame rates can be a real plus on lower end jobs and commercials. It makes so much stuff instantly more attractive and "rich" (if you don't overdo it).

I agree, Thomas...2/3 Scarlet is not on my Wish List.

But, I don't think I'm alone in saying that I would gladly hold off on buying an AF100 if RED promises me an S35 Scarlet by NAB. But, if RED has no news about the S35 by the time the AF100 is shipping...I'm buying an AF100 and not looking back!

Handled properly 2/3" is capable of a very useful range of creative DOF control and can deliver shallow DOF. The effective difference between Scarlet 2/3" and 4/3 in DOF is about 1-1/4f-stops.
If you compare the AF-100 with the 14-150 kit lens used on the GH1 and Scarlet fixed, there is essentially no DOF advantage in favor of the AF-100.

My exact feelings Mike.

Realistically, I don't expect Scarlet S35 to be out until late 2011 or even 2012.

I do have a feature film project lined up for next year, so I need a camera. I'm praying that the AF100 via HD-SDI has a good enough image for the big screen.

Hopefully my second feature is going to be shot on a Scarlet S35. =)

Thanks for the specifics there. With the HDR protecting highlights there will be a lot of situations where the 2/3s can be opened up to use the narrow DOF, if demanded.

I'm not so much concerned with the release date as I am the release order. With all the high profile clients, rental houses and wealthy people with connections I'm afraid it will be another six months to a year before I get my hands on a Scarlet. Not that I don't have the funds, as I've been saving for quite awhile (not easy on a film student budget) and am ready to go as far as a pretty spec'd out package that is comfortable with my current work needs.

What's to stop someone with the funds from going and buying a few brains and selling them on ebay for a marked up price? Happens all the time when something electronic is first released. Look at most Apple products, Sony Playstation 3, and so on. Will there be some measures in place to prevent this?
How will the purchasing work at first? Is it first come, first served or more of a I-got-lucky-there's one left sort of thing?

I'm sorry if this seems too far away or out to answer, but hopefully RED has thought this through, I'm sure.

P.S. Another great job from the guys at RED. Once all is done and out in the public, get some good vacation time and shoot awesome pictures, I'm sure the boss won't mind.
