  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet/Epic/Dragon DSLR thoughts

First off, I love the look and compactness of this setup.

Secondly, HOW do you guys get by focusing only using the EVF? The image is tiny. I couldn't imagine doing critical focus on it if I don't have an AC.

It sucks. No two ways about it. I have the focus check function mapped to my handle record trigger half-depress so I can toggle it on and off at a moments notice while recording or not but focusing with the EVF is extremely hard in a run and gun situation.

Okay. I thought I was just missing something, like the EVF having a 'blow up image 4x' type functionality!

Th image is small, yes, but far better than squinting in the sun at 5" touch. Great Idea William on the shutter half press key path, i will borrow that!

Here's an experimental rig I tried a little while back. Bottom plate (from Big Lu) with a NATO Rail and Grip. Could have made it lighter by taking off the top plate...

My opinion, having used all kinds of hand-held cameras (but not anything RED): I agree with Les, but I would add that the RED has, in addition to its unbeatable 'motor drive', an almost dead silent shutter. In some circumstances you would not want to shoot with anything else if you had the luxury of using a Scarlet or EPIC.

Having said that, there is no way I would use a RED camera over something like an Olympus OM-D E-M5 for most work. And when it comes to commercial jobs, perhaps a Sony A7 or Leica M would be a better solution, nevermind the medium format systems. Keep in mind that the new Pentax 645z is about the same price as a Scarlet, give or take.

One camera type I will never use again, save for medium format: the DSLR. For most purposes, it's finished.

Wild! very close to a live view of a dslr, this would be great indoors. What is the bottom grip?

Can't remember the manufacturer. But it's one of hundreds of NATO / Picatinny style grips... just search on eBay and you'll get quite a few.
