Will the scarlet dragon ever be available without sensor upgrade ? I simply cant afford $30,000 for a camera :frown: , $10,000-$15,000 for a scarlet dragon would be alot easier for me to buy. P.S couldent the scarlet dragon in theory shoot in 6K 24fps at a high compression ratio.

The most reasonable projection for the cost of a Scarlet Dragon is around $20K. Right now you can buy a Scarlet for about $10K and e Dragon upgrade is $9,500. That's probably the best indicator we have of what a Scarlet Dragon would cost - IF IT IS EVER AVAILABLE AS A STANDALONE PURCHASE (big IF). You might consider going the upgrade route.

Will it *ever* be available for less? Of course!

Just, maybe or maybe not from Red directly. Gear always depreciates, and the technology is still advancing. Give it enough time and you'll be able to get a Scarlet Dragon (assuming they are still on the road map and do get released) for a very, very low amount of money.

Just, ya know, it may be 5 or 10 years from now. And probably used from another owner-operator.

Red also *has* dropped prices in the past. The Epic used to cost, I think, $38k. They dropped that to around $19k, right? Will prices ever drop again? I dunno!!! But they could! Or they could not. Who knows?!

Here's what we do know: Red has not announced a lower priced option for getting Dragon into one's hands than buying a Scarlet and then separately upgrading it to Scarlet Dragon (once available) for $9,500. Will that change in the future? Your guess is as good as anyone's! Isn't that exciting?!

There is no indication that RED is going to be manufacturing a RED Scarlet Dragon new. However, I am more than willing to bet you will be able to pick up a "Battle-tested" Red Scarlet in the 12-16K range. As Doug pointed out all those Scarlet to Epic upgrades, I highly doubt RED is just going to throw them away. So they will upgrade the Scarlets that have been traded in, and sell them as battle tested Scarlet Dragons. But that is just my guess, and what I would do.

If I were in charge, I'd surely find a way to resell all the Scarlets that were traded in for Epics.

Probably they will do what they did with the RED ONEs that were traded for Epics. First to film schools and then sell the rest off as battle tested.

Well if a Scarlet dragon never comes out i'll have to get the blackmagic 4k camera instead.

Chad you should get one anyway for the full license of Resolve and UltraScope... And because even if there is a Scarlet-Dragon, it'll likely be a year away (they probably won't start upgrading until mid-summer).

or you could buy a used scarlet now for fairly cheap and get an upgrade later, and shoot now? just cuz there are cheap 4k options doesn't mean they all produce the same images or have the same specs. the way they ship you might as well own a scarlet used today then keep waiting on cameras not shipping, regardless of branding. just makes better since if one needs a camera in hand...
