  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet Dragon price guesses?

I was under the impression that Epic Dragon was already to be priced at $24,000.

Assuming that to be true, I think a Scarlet Dragon, if it is offered, would come at about $17.5K, just about even with Epic-X.

(I assume you are aware that Epic-X is currently listed in the RED store at $17.5K)

$13-15k for the Scarlet Dragon. Perhaps RED could surprise everyone and sell it for less in order to kick back some future competition.

If $13K were the case, you'd have quite a few happy owners of brand new Epic-Xs that could turn around and sell their brand new brains for $15K, buy a new Scarlet Dragon, and pocket $2K more than those that went the Scarlet to Scarlet Dragon path out of the gate. Not gonna happen any time soon.

I personally think RED wants out of the Scarlet market. It no longer wants to compete in that segment, and only wants to compete in the high end against Film, Arri, and Sony.

My personal feelings are that the Scarlet Dragon is a nod to the current Scarlet Customers, and they are ending the line, going for the high end of the market. The Scarlet did it's job and brought many indies into the RED ecosystem. No with the Epic Dragon priced around the original RED One, does RED really need the Scarlet line?

That is just my thoughts though.

I also feel like this is the direction they're heading. One flagship camera, the epic dragon, to compete in the high end market but at a much more accesible price. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out, but I'm glad they took care of the scarlet owners. I for one feel that the scarlet dragon steps on the epic dragon's toes in every aspect minus frame rates, though you could argue the same for current epic - scarlet. IMO 15K Scarlet Dragon which delivers on all the things people have been begging RED to improve (DR, color science & increased sensitivity) would make a 25K Epic Dragon a tough sell for many, especially those who dont necessarily understand the benefits of 6K, "No one's even watching 4K what's the point of 6k". RED skeptics and new comers alike either never cared for or never understood 4K, they've usually complained about DR (highlight roll off) color science (skin tones) and low light performance. Scarlet Dragon, at least on paper, addresses all of these.

I would definitely say between $9.5k less than Epic Dragon and $9.5k more than Scarlet-X, which would be $14.5k-$17.5k.

It makes sense that $17.5k would be the upper limit and is logical given that it's the same price as an upgrade to Epic-X, though it would be justifiable for it to be less since the upgrade may cost RED more money than the trade-in.

About $16k also makes sense because it twice the relative price point of Scarlet-X to Epic-X when they were first released which was about 1:3 and it approximately doubles the new Scarlet's capability compared to the new Epic.

Scarlet was released at about $10k and Epic about $30k, and Scarlet had 4-6x less capability at frame sizes below the highest. Looking at Scarlet Dragon, it seems that relationship approximately doubles, with Scarlet Dragon having about 2-3x less capability than Epic Dragon at most resolutions. So instead of being 1/3 the cost of an Epic, Scarlet Dragon will be about 2/3 the cost, putting it right around $16k, which is right in the middle of the range I suggest.
