RED hasn't posted a price for Scarlet Dragon yet.

Well, I guess you could buy a Scarlet then instantly upgrade, so the price would be $7,950 + $9,500 = $17,450.

Anyway... anyone have a prediction on how much it will cost when RED sells Scarlet Dragons directly?

Here's my attempt: Epic-M is $22,500. Epic-M-Dragon is $29,000 ($6,500 more). So Scarlet Dragon will be $7,950 + $6,500 = $14450.

Or maybe a little less? Scarlet Dragon + Side SSD + mount + 1 year warranty for $15K?

What do folks think-eth?

They will.
Amazing how things change in a week. 10 days ago RED said Dragon in Scarlet was impossible. Now they might just mass produce them.

My guess is that brain only will be $17.5 - if it's much lower than that there will be a few Scarlet owners looking gift horses in the mouth.

I thought RED said that the only way you could get Scarlet Dragon was to currently own a scarlet and do the upgrade and they wouldnt be selling scarlet with dragon sensor.

Now im officially confused :)

Epic X Dragon will be 24K (if I remember correctly!).

So, maybe, just to confuse things further, we'll have Scarlet Dragon and Scarlet Dragon M (LOL!). Might be joking there, but there are economics that might mean it's worth holding back on any Scarlet Dragon release.

What will be interesting is seeing if any flavour of Scarlet Dragon will be available (as a new purchase) before the Epic X Dragon is freely available.

For now, this is true.

OK - so let's imagine a year's time from now: You want to buy a Scarlet with a Dragon sensor.

Do you think the only way to do that will be to buy a Scarlet then get the Dragon upgrade?

EG have RED build a full Mysterium-X Scarlet... then rip out the sensor and chips and put in Dragon stuff?

Seems a little inefficient to me! Methinks it would be cheaper for RED to just offer a Scarlet Dragon from square 1.

Probably this will cost a little less than buying a Scarlet and upgrading to Dragon. Just as it costs a little less to buy an Epic-M Dragon than it does to buy an Epic-M + Dragon upgrade.

Right?

I hope they don't offer new Scarlet Dragons for sale. RED's philosophy of 'obsolescence obsolete' doesn't fit with selling an end of the line brain out of the gate.

People who choose to go Dragon do so under the terms that they could no longer upgrade. Either that, or I could see them doing it if they found an economically feasable way to steer folks from Scarlet to Epic, but as of today that can't happen with Dragon.

There is and always will be a perfectly fine upgrade plan from Scarlet Dragon to Epic Dragon:

1. Sell your Scarlet Dragon second-hand
2. Add a little more money
3. Buy an Epic Dragon (from RED or second-hand)

If RED offered a Scarlet Dragon for a good price I would buy one - even if you couldn't trade it in at RED later.

I personally think RED wants out of the Scarlet market. It no longer wants to compete in that segment, and only wants to compete in the high end against Film, Arri, and Sony.

My personal feelings are that the Scarlet Dragon is a nod to the current Scarlet Customers, and they are ending the line, going for the high end of the market. The Scarlet did it's job and brought many indies into the RED ecosystem. No with the Epic Dragon priced around the original RED One, does RED really need the Scarlet line?

That is just my thoughts though.

Stretching the definition of 'upgrade' a bit, don't you think Bruce? I was thinking upgrades meant either:

1) Red willing to buy back your camera and apply the balance towards a new camera system (a la R1->Epic or Scarlet->Epic)
2) Red able to swap internals on your current camera system (R1 -> R1MX or Epic/Scarlet MX -> Dragon)

Red may decide to buy back Scarlet Dragons two years from now for their latest and greatest 8K aquisition camera and then it would be an upgrade path, but today there is no upgrade path and Red has stated that it's not in the cards.

OK, now you guys have me fascinated.

I hadn't even considered that RED would want to discontinue Scarlet and only have a ~$20K camera.

I suspect that they make a lot of money on accessories - seriously, their profit margin on those SSDs and LCDs must be pretty good. Surely they want a lot of cameras out there?

Anyway... food for thought!

I guess Sony, Canon, Blackmagic Design and GoPro will just have to take all those sub-$20K customers?

Seems crazy to me - but what do I know...

My dilema is still deciding whether to go with Scarlet Dragon or Epic X for my upgrade path. I love the capabilities of the Dragon sensor, but hard to resist an EPIC with 5k 120fps and wider FOV

I would guess 17.5k but I'm not 100% sure they will sell it. I also agree that red may very well not offer Scarlet dragon for sale in store. They may notify us when the upgrade offer expires and after that no scarlet will be able to upgrade thus protecting the epic-x sales and making Scarlet dragon a limited edition camera. It's just a guess, with RED who knows what will happen.

Thinking about this a little deeper.

However, I think plenty of "Battle Tested" Scarlet Dragons are going to come out for a very good price. (All the Epic-X trade ups.) My guess will be 11-12K. This will get more people in the RED EcoSystem on a "dead end" platform so to speak. So eventually the only path will be the Epic.

Maybe after that we will see a new "low-end" camera made from non-passed Epic Dragon parts. (Or whatever is next)

Again, this is just my best guess ....
