  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Picked up our new Scarlet-Dragon yesterday morning in Hong Kong. First surprise: She got shipped with Nikon mount and Side SSD in that nice branded metal case instead of the "technical drawing"cardboard box. 2. RED included a little RED sticker...

My wife wanted to call Scarlet Dragon #04866 "Toothless" we decided to name her "Night Fury". How much "fury" she will spread at "night" will be tested back home.

This little "test" has been shot at night in our hotel room. The desk lamp is illuminating only and I used 50mm Sigma Art/f1.4 (Nikon mount) Scarlet Dragon 5k, 8:1 compression. I am here with my 11" MBA so I did not play around with the footage. This is how it came out of the camera. Look at the drops on the bottle or the M&M colours behind the sign... I am so impressed :)

I opted to buy another Scarlet Dragon rather than upgrade our MX-Scarlet to Epic, because the images we saw here from the Dragon sensor blew me away. I can still not stop smiling. I did not do all the compression testing yet, but I am confident, that at 5k 24fps and 8:1 the Scarlet can compete with the Epic-MX even if the Epic-MX is capable of lower compression rates. Guys, don't crucify me for this. When I grow up I still want an Epic Dragon because of all the goodness it can provide better than the Scarlet, but for now, for myself I am sure I made the right choice with the Scarlet Dragon.

Cant wait to get her up in the air or out in nature!!!

Scarlet Dragon "Night Fury" @ 5min to Midnight

Scarlet Dragon "Night Fury" @ 5min to Midnight

Here now a night shot... Had to shoot through the Hotel window, since the viewing deck was closed already...

Shot at 250 ISO and 360shutter... 50mm Sigma ART @ f1.4... pushed in RedCine-X to ISO1250... a bit NR but no serious Grading or any of that sorts.

Good timing on that shot! Glad you're happy with your Scarlet Dragon!

Thanks Guys...
10 Sec pre-roll :) a feature that required an extra board for the big Sony cams and sat you back around 10k USD came from RED as firmware update out of some clever thinking with the SSD Redmags :)

That Sigma lens looks pretty sharp wide open. Also not seeing much CA. Looks good!

Playing around in Redcine-X.

Thanks for sharing your first impressions of the Scarlet Dragon Marco.

@Peter: Mee too... I was nervous about the lenses I could use with the Dragon being 5k and all... but due to the reduced pixel size my "standard" aerial lens Nikon 17-55mm/2.8 still works fine. Looking to upgrade that one soon though ;) Will also try my Zeiss standard PL (16mm & 24mm) one day for aerial work.

Its a sunny day in rainy season Manila... should the sun stay I will be going to th spool later for some skin tones.

Sun was up.. so was the famous Manila traffic... where a bit too late for the pool session... but will post some R3Ds later... different skin tones in afternoon sun and mixed light (whatever they light the pool with)...

Wow, great stuff. Would really like to see some more footage from your Scarlet Dragon. I'm very tempted, and there seems to be scarcity of Scarlet Dragon footage.
