Does anyone have an update of the SCARLET DRAGON compression ratios ?

I'd like to see a full sheet specifically for SCARLET, before I make my final decision on whether I should upgrade to this, or Epic X?

Thanks.

I believe a person named Phil Holland has links in his signature block

The guide says that Scarlet Dragon ana 5k is 6:1 but on my cam it's 5:1. Haven't noticed other discrepancies

Yeah, 5K Scarlet dragon Anamorphic is 5:1.

Watch this video, https://vimeo.com/115074032 - the first two shots were 2k WS 150 fps uprezzed to a 4k timeline, the rest of the slow motion shots were all 5k ws 60FPS @ 16:1 downsampled to a 4k timeline.

Here is another example of Scarlet Dragon frame rate and compression tests - https://vimeo.com/111890797

Hope this helps.

Hey Akin,

What Resolution have you frequently used?

Have you used 5KWS at 60fps? If so How is it at 16:1?

Here's something I recently said in another thread:

5K WS 60fps looks fine to me and is better than the other high frame rate resolutions.
I usually use 5K WS 7:1 24 fps and I would use 5K WS 16:1 60 fps or 4K WS 13:1 76fps for slow motion. If I was vlogging or something not crucial, maybe 5K WS 12:1 24fps.

This helps a lot brother, I appreciate it. This may come off a bit arrogant, but I strongly believe they will have an upgrade option for Epic Dragon, Post- NAB. I like what Epic X offers, but I'm not passing up on Dragon's color space and HDR . I believe a Dragon Upgrade from SCARLET Dragon would be worth the wait. We will see what happens.

I think Phil only shows Epic Dragon. :-(

That's because when I made that chart the Scarlet Dragon wasn't out yet.

However! I do actually recommend checking out the DSMC MEDIA OPERATION GUIDE for content like this because if RED finds ways to squeak out more performance via a firmware update it effects everything across the board.

I could be wrong but I think a Scarlet Dragon to Epic Dragon upgrade is highly doubtful, especially if there's a "Scarlet-level" Weapon to be had. Once Weapon comes out, the current models will be the "old" models.

Yes, RED plans to continue producing them (for straight purchase) alongside Weapon for the time being, but that will probably eventually come to an end.

And, it costs money to keep upgrade lines running. Jarred has already said MX to Dragon upgrades will end by July or so and the $9,500 upgrade pricing goes back up to $12,500 on NAB day 1.

I just don't think RED would devote time, money and resources to upgrade one older model to another older model. Software companies don't usually allow you to upgrade from version 3 to version 4 when they're on version 6 (I'm talking paid upgrades). After July, I'm thinking you upgrade to Weapon or you can't upgrade.

Like I said, I could be wrong.

My rule of thumb is that anything above 10:1 is "risky". It may or may not be usable depending on the shot. The only way to know is to playback on a computer which really harms efficiency.

Dragon's cleaner base makes 16:1 very usable when exposed correctly. Especially if the subject is not a highly detailed moving background (tree leaves, water, etc).

In fact it's so good we will roll interviews up around 12:1 compression even if we are rolling 5k 24fps and could get 7:1.

The 5KWS 60fps is so much better than Scarlet MX's options - and not needing to crop in on the sensor limits increased noise quite a bit from the old body.

Of course, Phil. I understand you can't be expected to do everything for us. LOL

I did check out the Ops Guide but can't find anywhere where they actually break down the compression ratios for different frame rates and resolutions. Just says that it ranges from 2:1 to 22:1 for Dragon (no differentiation for Epic/Scarlet) and that the default is 8:1.

Do I understand that to be Epic Dragon? Or does one get that 7:1 from Scarlet Dragon as well?

Terry, click the link that I provided and check page 78.
