  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

SCARLET ANNOUNCEMENT - Feedback

I hope that the software management of the Scarlet-X is completely working, without use limitations and it does not need of update for being able to use the declared functions.

heh heh i'm not sure if where Scarlet and I are right now legally counts as being in a test lab.... but It should.

Sometime, when you're "testing" that Scarlet, can you do us a favor and shoot the same still scene at 5K, 4K, and 3K with the same lens, so we can compare some things? Detail loss, DOF changes, exposure, lens distortion and such? (Maybe with the Nikon mount and the 14-24 2.8 ED/AF "Crystal Ball" if you have one?)

If the 4K and 3K motion stuff intercuts seamlessly, we can switch from 3K to 4K to "widen" our lenses!

For 4k are all of the compression options between 7:1 and 18:1 available or are we limited at any resolution in our compression above the posted minimum compression?

Don't tell all the sports photojournalists :P

I was just speaking cinematically. Just goes to show, we all have things to learn. Photogs, are a different beast, fast shutter, catching the moment, ups sharpness if you are in focus, kinda like that freeze-frame effect... Tradeoffs... Red Pro Primes killed it today during a test shoot - they are amazing.

Mount Material elaboration

Mount Material elaboration

The mount can hold the weight of the lens no problem but it depends if you are using the lens mount to support the camera, which you shouldn't do but some people do anyways. Remember, a fully loaded scarlet is going to weigh a lot more than a plastic dslr. The titanium mount is going to move less than the aluminum mount under extreme stress and temperatures... That's why we offer two mounts. The vast majority of people will never notice a difference... But a handful will. And the longer the lens, the more solid you are going to want things.

 ...Jarred you really make it difficult for some of us to make a choice with even the Ai being so darn good at such a steal price ;)

...Now it seems me and a handful of other people will have to find out if we do or do not belong to Ti Power User Group ;)

to elaborate and dig a bit further: ( sorry if somethings might have been answered before)

With movement under extreme temperatures do you mean:
A. When the Mount is really hot or cold ( extreme) then the Lens might move more in relation to the Sensor when doing Focus and Zoom with a Ai Mount than a Ti?

B. That the Mount would expand and Backfocus is changing over Time?
If so would Temperature movement naturally only be over a longer period of time, and dictated by Ambient Temperature? so for example not really happen during the beginning of the shooting when the camera warms up etc... Or is Camera Temperature also a factor and Changes would be in the State of a current Shoot?

->Also isn't it so that Backfocus on most Canon Lenses not the Big Issue since a lot of them don't have accurate Markings for manual Focus Pulling anyway and the Autofocus might not care at all?
...or will a not correct Backfocus cut down overall Lens Performance in regard of Sharpness and Vignetting no matter the Current set Focus Distance?

But it seems that Temperature Expansion could at least introduce a Lens being Parafocal not holding the Focus Point through Zooming, so in that case a Ti Mount not having Backfocus Movement being well worth it?
(Of course first one would have to make sure the Lens itself is in correct Backfocus, probably only possible by Canon Service ?)

will extreme physical Force on the Mount be able to move the Mount only temporary or also affecting it long term ? And would such also be able to set it in a state where the Mount would not hold the Lens in the totally correct Image Plane anymore ( like a slight tilt shift Optics Effect?)

...can't wait for that mount...no matter what final Material it will be ...

Excited to have finally become an official part of the RED family with my SCARLET-X purchase. This is just too exciting.

What is the best way to treat the clip virgins?
We must transcode the material with Redcine-X, but not having the dedicated card RedRocket how much time take with a iMac i7 3.2 GHz or mac book pro i7?
The algorithm used is the demosaicing?

Because if I'm not wrong is the same used by Canon.

Thanks Mark. All the cameras at RED last night had Playback working. We will post a public beta build well before the end of November.

Hi,

As I understand the scarlet will have playback already when shipping (end of this week). Will it mean that we can expect EPIC update too that allows playback?

Thank you in advance for the answer.

An epic beta build will be released around the same time.

Are the first Scarlet-X's still on track to ship tomorrow?

Also, any further info on battery runtimes and power consumption for Scarlet-X? Seems like these specs must be finalized by now if the ship date is supposed to be tomorrow.

Any answer?

To workaround this problem, when I'm on way with my macbookpro, can I use the SDI to connect a blackmagic SSD external recorder to Scarlet and record in a prores format?

Pls give me an answer, for me is very important to decide my workflow.

I suggest you go here:

Download some r3d's and run them through your different alternatives.

Before the rocket, I used 1/4 a lot for offlines and while grading. Used to give ok realtime on most computers.

Cheers!

Which Blackmagic SSD external recorder would that be? :)
I don't believe they make one that does prores.

But yes you could use an external field recorder like the Samurai or PIX240 to record prores if you cant handle long renders. Basically if you go with Redcode RAW, realtime playback without transcoding isnt an issue since you can just playback in 1/4 or 1/8 resolution, but you may be faced with long renders when you finally export/render your timeline since that will need to do a full 4k debayer which can be quite slow on a CPU.

We are not likely to offer "Scarlet only" media. Someone owns both EPIC and Scarlet and has to remember which media will work with which camera?

Shooting a professional camera costs real money. If it doesn't make sense for you... we completely understand.

Jim

FWIW Sony's new solid state HDCAM system has separate media, rated by speed. I think that counts as "professional".

Red should seriously consider offering (much) cheaper low-speed media for Scarlet and Epic that's not capably of high frame rates. Imagine 64GB of Scarlet-rated SSD for $200!
